Andre Jackson was optioned to make roster room

It was considerably longer than missing just two starts, but Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin was activated off the injured list to start on Monday, making one final push to stretch out before the postseason.

Gonsolin last pitched on August 23, missing just shy of six weeks with a right forearm strain. He’s only expected to pitch three innings or so against the Rockies, having only pitched in one minor league rehab appearance, throwing two scoreless innings last Tuesday for Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The time off interrupted a dream season for Gonsolin, who made his first All-Star team while going 16-1 in 23 starts. His 2.10 ERA led the National League when he landed on the injured list, but no longer has enough innings to qualify.

Now the hope is to continue to build up arm strength to be able to provide some semblance of length during the postseason. Given that the Dodgers have five days off between the end of the regular season and their first playoff game, and that Gonsolin wouldn’t pitch until Game 3 or (more likely) Game 4 of the NLDS, there’s still time for him to pitch a simulated game in between now and then to stretch out even further.

But more importantly is how Gonsolin looks on the mound and how much rust he’ll have after missing six weeks.

To make room for Gonsolin, the Dodgers optioned pitcher Andre Jackson to the Arizona Complex League. Jackson pitched four innings in relief on Sunday. In four games in the majors, all in September, the right-hander had a 1.86 ERA with nine strikeouts and four walks in 9⅔ innings.

Left knee contusion for Grove

The Dodgers before Sunday’s game against the Rockies recalled Andre Jackson, adding a fresh arm for at least a day as the regular season winds down. Michael Grove was placed on the injured list after taking a hard grounder off his left knee in Saturday’s start.

Grove allowed four runs in five innings against Colorado, and his last pitch of the game was a 99-mph grounder from C.J. Cron that caromed perfectly off Grove’s knee to Freddie Freeman at first base for the last out of the frame. Grove was diagnosed with a left knee contusion.

In seven games in the majors this season, including six starts, Grove had a 4.60 ERA in his first year in the majors, with 24 strikeouts and 10 walks in 29⅓ innings.

Jackson recorded the Dodgers’ only three-inning save of the season last Sunday, the last time he pitched. The right-hander has pitched three games in the majors this year, two of them multi-inning scoreless relief affairs, allowing a total of one unearned run in 5... innings with the Dodgers this season.

Jackson was optioned Tuesday to make room for David Price’s activation from the injured list.

How long Jackson stays active remains to be seen. Long relief could be needed with Tony Gonsolin likely to pitch only three innings Monday, and possible relatively short outings for Julio Urías and Clayton Kershaw to end their regular seasons. The Dodgers also need a corresponding roster move to activate Gonsolin on Monday.

Or maybe Jackson’s new role is the late-season Sunday three-inning save artist.

Andre Jackson optioned, Phil Bickford placed on IL

Before each of the first two games of their series in San Diego, the Dodgers added a pitcher to their bullpen who might help them in the postseason. David Price was activated off the injured list on Tuesday and Yency Almonte was activated off the IL on Wednesday, ending long stints on the shelf for both.

Price didn’t pitch in either of the first two games at Petco Park, but he was active for the first time since September 3, having missed 22 games with left wrist inflammation. Almonte was gone even longer, out for 46 games with right elbow tightness.

Before Wednesday’s game, Almonte was interviewed by Kirsten Watson of SportsNet LA and others, talking about his road back to the roster, which included three games last week on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

“After my second outing in my rehab stint was where I felt like I had my stuff pretty much they way I had it before I got hurt,” Almonte told Watson. “That’s when I felt more confident, I was able to let it go, trust my pitches.”

Almonte’s last appearance with the Dodgers was August 3 before he was called in to face the top of San Diego’s lineup in a tie game in the eighth inning on Wednesday. Almonte showed no rust, inducing two groundouts — one by Juan Soto — and striking out Manny Machado. The sinker/slider artist lowered his ERA on the season to a paltry 1.11.

Almonte especially adds another layer to the Dodgers’ multi-pronged high-leverage mix in a post-Kimbrel bullpen, giving them at least six pitchers — right-handers Evan Phillips, Chris Martin, Tommy Kahnle, and Almonte, plus left-handers Alex Vesia and Caleb Ferguson — they feel comfortable using in almost any situation.

Another potential member of that group is Brusdar Graterol, who’s pitched twice since his return from missing three weeks with right elbow inflammation. Graterol will serve as the opener for the series finale on Thursday night in front of Andrew Heaney, serving as a likely preview of Dodgers playoff games not started by Julio Urías or Clayton Kershaw.

To make room for Price and Almonte, the Dodgers on Tuesday optioned Andre Jackson to Triple-A, presumably carried away like a hero on the shoulders of teammates after his three-inning save on Sunday. On Wednesday, Phil Bickford landed on the injured list with right shoulder fatigue. Given the timing, just like with Dustin May, this move ends Bickford’s regular season.

Bickford on Monday was tied for the team lead with 60 appearances this year, since passed by Phillips and Vesia. Bickford had a 4.72 ERA and 3.47 xERA in 61 innings, with 67 strikeouts against 14 walks. Bickford was done in this year by the long ball, his 12 home runs allowed double the next-highest total among Dodgers relievers (Price).

Andre Jackson was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City

Dustin May’s regular season is over. The Dodgers right-hander was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday with low back tightness. Now the only question is whether May will be ready to pitch in the postseason.

Because May pitched Wednesday, the most the Dodgers could have backdated his injured list stint is two days, to Thursday. But even if they could backdate the IL stint the full three days, May’s 15 days would sideline him through October 5, the end of the regular season.

May has been up and down in his return from Tommy John surgery, putting up a 4.50 ERA in seven starts, with 29 strikeouts in 30 innings, but also 14 walks (an 11-percent rate) and five hit batters. He allowed 15 runs in 19 innings over his last four starts.

The National League Division Series starts on Tuesday, October 11, so May has about two and a half weeks to recover to be able to pitch in that series.

It’s another question mark for the back end of a Dodgers pitching staff that has plenty of them. Beyond Julio Urías, Clayton Kershaw, and Tyler Anderson, the Dodgers options for a fourth starter are sparse. Tony Gonsolin hasn’t pitched since August 23, sidelined by a right forearm strain, and is expected to pitch two innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City on a rehab assignment on Tuesday. Andrew Heaney has a 4.81 ERA and has allowed 11 home runs over his last seven starts.

The Dodgers will need to find some combination of pitchers to fill innings from that group plus the bullpen, which currently has Yency Almonte, Blake Treinen, and David Price still on the injured list.

In the interim, Andre Jackson was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City, continuing his yo-yo from the last two weeks, getting called up three times and sent down twice over the last fifteen days.

LA follows Treinen/Muncy playbook with Hudson contract

With a pending club option decision roughly six weeks away, the Dodgers instead optioned to lock in Daniel Hudson for next year now. Los Angeles has signed the veteran reliever to a contract for 2023, with a club option for 2024, following a familiar pattern.

The Dodgers announced Hudson’s contract on Friday.

Hudson earned $6 million on his one year contract with the Dodgers this season, and had a $6.5 million club option for next year, with a $1 million buyout. Hudson’s new contract guarantees that $6.5 million for 2023, plus a similar club option for 2024.

The contract was first reported by both Jeff Passan of ESPN and Fabian Ardaya at The Athletic.

Justin Bruihl was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City

The Dodgers activated reliever Brusdar Graterol from the injured list on Thursday after missing over three weeks with right elbow inflammation, potentially the first of a wave of returning pitchers that could pitch for the team in October.

Graterol was been sidelined all month, having last pitched on August 28. That came only four appearances after also missing nearly six weeks on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

While on the mound this season, Graterol has been effective, with a 3.02 ERA, 2.52 xERA, and 3.11 FIP, with 39 strikeouts and 10 walks in 44⅔ innings. His 62.9-percent ground ball rate is tops on the staff. Eleven of his 41 games have been multi-inning appearances, most on the team.

But Graterol has only pitched in four games since the week before the All-Star break.

Justin Bruihl was optioned to make room for Graterol, after pitching in four of the last five days. Among those appearances was Sunday in San Francisco, when the left-hander got the final out of the game for his first career save. Bruihl has a 3.80 ERA in 24 games this season, with 13 strikeouts and six walks in 23⅔ innings.

Graterol’s activation still leaves five pitchers on the injured list with at least a chance to return this season. Tony Gonsolin stands apart from the group as the only starting pitcher, though with less than three weeks until the postseason starts it’s clear that he will be used in a shorter, more limited role, if at all.

Gonsolin is expected to pitch multiple innings in a simulated game at Dodger Stadium on Thursday, and if all goes well could pitch in a rehab game in Triple-A early next week.

David Price will also pitch an inning in that simulated game on Thursday, trying to return from left wrist inflammation. He last pitched on August 29.

Yency Almonte, out since August 9 with right elbow tightness, started a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Oklahoma City, so far pitching a scoreless inning with one strikeout. He’s expected to pitch again for Oklahoma City twice more this week, with a potential return to the Dodgers next week.

Blake Treinen, whose first day eligible to be activated from the injured list was Thursday, has still not fully recovered from his shoulder tightness that has sidelined him for two weeks. Treinen has pitched in five major league games this season, including two since April.

Victor González, who has yet to pitch this season and had arthroscopic elbow surgery in April, is back on the rehab beam after getting shut down for a week. González pitched a scoreless inning on Tuesday, working around a pair of singles.

Tyler Anderson was activated off the paternity list

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers recalled Ryan Pepiot from Triple-A Oklahoma City to serve as the 29th player for Tuesday’s doubleheader at Dodger Stadium, with plans to piggyback with starting pitcher Michael Grove in the first game against the Diamondbacks.

“The hope is that Ryan and Michael will take down the first game,” manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday morning.

Grove is coming off his best major league start, allowing only two solo home runs in five innings last Wednesday against the D-backs in Phoenix. On the season, Grove has allowed 11 runs (seven earned) in 14⅓ innings, with a 4.40 ERA and 11 strikeouts against six walks.

“I think there’s conviction, there’s trust, for any player once you get to this level to have some success and belief that what you do is good enough. I think he’s starting to feel that,” Roberts said of Grove. “It’s a leap of faith to trust your stuff and your abilities, to throw your fastball over the plate, to throw the curveball in the strike zone and know that it’s good enough. Those are the kind of things young players gotta see. Those things I saw in his last outing.”

Pepiot has a 3.78 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 33⅓ innings in his eight games with the Dodgers this year, but has also walked 26 batters with a 17.4-percent walk rate.

“With Ryan, he’s got to get to that next step. His last one in Triple-A was really good, but he’s got to do it consistently at this level.”

Pepiot last pitched Thursday for Oklahoma City, striking out eight in five scoreless innings.

Mookie Betts, Max Muncy, and Will Smith are sitting to start Game 1 of the doubleheader, with Roberts trying to balance the starts in Tuesday’s two games. Miguel Vargas starts in left field, Joey Gallo in right field, and Trayce Thompson in center in the opener.

Gavin Lux is the designated hitter in Game 1, and will play left field in the night cap, Roberts said. Justin Turner is starting at third base in the opener and will be the DH in Game 2.

The Dodgers also activated Tyler Anderson off the paternity list on Tuesday, and optioned Andre Jackson.

Arizona called up old friend Edwin Uceta as the 29th player for the doubleheader, his sixth stint in the majors this season. The 24-year-old right-hander has a 5.82 ERA in 10 appearances for the D-backs this year, with 13 strikeouts and seven walks in 17 innings.

Dodgers left-hander Tyler Anderson has delivered all season, a first-time All-Star and rotation anchor who leads the team in innings. Now, he’ll get a few days off for another delivery.

Anderson was placed on paternity leave on Saturday, with he and his wife Taitym welcoming their third child.

The left-hander is 15-3 with a 2.62 ERA that ranks fifth in the National League. Anderson has 119 strikeouts and 32 walks in his 27 games and 161⅔ innings, the latter leading the Dodgers. Paternity leave, by rule, is a minimum of one day and a maximum of three, so Anderson will be out until at least Tuesday.

[Editor’s note: This post was corrected. An earlier version said paternity leave was a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven days.]

Anderson was in line to pitch Monday against the Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium, but that won’t happen now. With Michael Grove inserted as a sixth starter last Wednesday plus Thursday’s scheduled off day, the team has plenty of room to maneuver the rotation. For instance, Clayton Kershaw last pitched Tuesday, and would still be on extra rest if he starts on Monday.

The Dodgers have a split doubleheader against the D-backs on Tuesday. Grove would be on five days rest to start one of those games.

In the interim, the Dodgers recalled Andre Jackson as an extra arm in the bullpen. This is the fourth stint in the majors for Jackson, who was optioned to Triple-A on Wednesday.

Jackson has pitched once for the Dodgers this season, throwing two scoreless innings last Sunday to close out a win in San Diego. The right-hander has struggled this year in Triple-A with a 5.00 ERA and 61 walks in 75⅔ innings to go with his 76 strikeouts. Though in his last seven outings with Oklahoma City, Jackson posted a 3.26 ERA and while his 19 walks in 30⅓ innings is still high, his 14.1-percent walk rate during that stretch is a marked improvement over his 19.1-percent walk rate in his first 14 games.

Notes

As foretold on Friday, Gavin Lux is starting at second base for the Dodgers on Saturday, batting ninth. It’s the first game since September 1 for Lux, who has been battling neck issues.

Trayce Thompson gets the start in centerfield and Joey Gallo in left field for the Dodgers. John Brebbia starts for the Giants in what is expected to be a bullpen game for the home team.

San Francisco made a few roster moves before the game. Pitcher Sean Hjelle was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento, with the 6’11 right-hander likely to take down innings on Saturday. Heliot Ramos was also called up from Triple-A, and starts in right field for the Giants.

Pitcher Luis Ortiz, who recorded five outs in relief on Friday, and old friend Willie Calhoun were optioned to Sacramento.
