Kershaw sets LA strikeout record in a Dodgers loss

Wearing No. 21 on the back of his cap (as a former Roberto Clemente Award winner), No. 22 passed No. 20 to become the all-time Dodgers strikeout leader on Saturday. But after a Clayton Kershaw milestone, the Tigers feasted off the Dodgers bullpen for a 5-1 win on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.

Carrying 10 or 11 pitchers in the bullpen so far this season, the Dodgers haven’t had to use many relievers on back-to-back days. But they used three pitchers on Saturday who pitched on Friday, and all of them allowed a run-scoring hit.

Evan Phillips was the first to relieve Kershaw, starting the seventh. He allowed a single and hit a batter, then surrendered a double to Javy Báez that broke a 1-1 tie. Brusdar Graterol walked his idol, fellow Venezuelan Miguel Cabrera, to load the bases. before Austin Meadows singled home two.

In the eighth inning, Reyes Moronta allowed an infield single to Jeimer Candelario, who scored on Tucker Barnhart’s RBI double.

Saturday represented a rare misstep for the Dodgers bullpen, whose four runs allowed are the most this season. The Dodgers pitching staff as a whole has allowed four or more runs only four times in 20 games this season.

Even with this game, the Dodgers bullpen has a 2.55 ERA, the third-best ERA in the majors, and 27.9-percent strikeout rate on the season, which ranks fifth-best.

The team with the best bullpen ERA in MLB right now? That’s the Tigers, at 2.02, including four scoreless inning to close out this win.

The record setter

Kershaw retired his first eight batters, and his strikeout of Dustin Garneau equaled Don Sutton with 2,696 career strikeouts. The path to the record got a little choppy after that, with four of the next five batters reaching base. Javy Báez singled home a run in the third, one of three two-strike hits for the Tigers against Kershaw.

Spencer Torkelson, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 draft, provided the answer to a Dodgers trivia question, going down swinging on a slider to give Kershaw sole possession of the franchise strikeout record.

Kershaw only allowed four hits on the night, in six innings. Kershaw also walked two batters, his first two free passes of the season, and struck out seven, giving him 2,700 strikeouts in his career.

Saturday was the 380th regular season start for Kershaw. His mound opponent, Tigers right-hander Beau Brieske, was making just his second career start, but mostly held his own. Brieske only allowed one run, despite missing only three bats among his 90 pitches.

Brieske allowed three hits and two walks, but after a Mookie Betts home run to lead off the first, nobody else scored. Twenty-five times the Dodgers fouled off one of Brieske’s pitches, including 10 by Justin Turner in his fourth-inning at-bat. That was a 14-pitch battle that ended with Turner flying out to center.

More Dodgers patience was on display when Cody Bellinger greeted reliever Joe Jiménez with a 12-pitch walk to open the seventh, a battle that included eight foul balls. Gavin Lux added a one-out single to give the Dodgers their best rally of the night, but Michael Fulmer got Austin Barnes to ground into a double play.

One run matches the Dodgers’ lowest offensive output this season, and four hits is their second-worst game of 2022.

Torkelson was Kershaw’s fourth strikeout on Saturday, number 2,697 in Kershaw’s career. It was finished off by the slider, which has ended 20 of the left-hander’s 30 strikeouts so far this season.

Kershaw ended his night with seven strikeouts in six innings, allowing one run. He has 2,700 career strikeouts.

Sutton passed Don Drysdale for the top spot on the Dodgers’ strikeout list on August 5, 1979 against San Francisco. Sutton’s 42 years and eight months holding the franchise strikeout record is the longest reign of any Dodgers pitcher.
Those four Hall of Fame pitchers now hold the Nos. 2 though 5 spots on the all-time Dodgers list. Kershaw one day will join them in Cooperstown.

Austin Barnes caught Kershaw on Saturday, the third time this season behind the plate for Kershaw and 61st time catching him in his career. Kershaw has 399 strikeouts with Barnes behind the plate, third-most among catchers, behind only A.J. Ellis (920 strikeouts) and Yasmani Grandal (451).

Kershaw walked Robbie Grossman in the third inning, his first walk issued this season, which came after 26 strikeouts. That included 13 strikeouts in seven perfect innings on April 13 in Minnesota in his first start of the year. It’s the most strikeouts without a walk to begin a season for Kershaw in his 15-year career.

At any point in the season, Kershaw’s most strikeouts without a walk is 46, from July 3 to August 1, 2015.

Some of the most memorable strikeouts for the Dodgers LHP

Clayton Kershaw set the Dodgers record for strikeouts on Saturday, passing Don Sutton for the top spot on the franchise leaderboard.

Spencer Torkelson was Kershaw’s record-setting 2,697th strikeout, the latest in a long line of milestone strikeouts in the left-hander’s 15-year career.

Kershaw made his major league debut on May 25, 2008, just shy of two years after he was drafted in the first round. But his arrival was announced earlier that spring, with a strikeout of Sean Casey in Vero Beach. Kershaw’s curveball buckled Casey’s knees so much that Vin Scully dubbed the pitch “Public Enemy No. 1.”

But he used a different pitch to record his first major league strikeout that counted.

Jill Painter Lopez at the Orange County Register noted that Kershaw, just two months after his 20th birthday, cracked a smile after his first striking out, a future teammate.

“The baby-faced pitcher had just recorded the first strikeout of his major-league career on a high fastball to the Cardinals’ Skip Schumaker, the first batter he faced,” she wrote. “Kershaw, the unflappable kid with the sensational curveball, couldn’t help it.”

Kershaw struck out his 500th batter on opening day in 2011, the start of his first Cy Young Award season. Two years later he won his second Cy Young, and that April became the second-fastest Dodger to 1,000 strikeouts by both age (only Fernando Valenzuela was younger) and by innings (only Hideo Nomo reached it faster).

Strikeout number 1,292 doesn’t seem like a milestone, as its not a round number, nor did it mark a memorable rung on the all-time ladder. But when Kershaw fanned Corey Dickerson in the ninth inning on June 18, 2014, it capped off his most dominant pitching performance, finishing off a 15-strikeout, zero-walk no-hitter to beat the Rockies.

“He’s the best pitcher on the planet,” boasted catcher A.J. Ellis after the game, “and it’s not even close.”

Kershaw won his third Cy Young that season, and was also named National League MVP.

In 2015, Kershaw was the first major league pitcher to strike out 300 batters in a season in 13 years, and the first Dodger to do so since Sandy Koufax 49 years earlier. B.J. Upton was the batter for No. 300, marking the 1,745th strikeout of Kershaw’s career.

Two seasons later, Kershaw was the fifth-youngest pitcher in MLB history to reach 2,000 strikeouts, when he got Jonathan Villar swinging in Milwaukee:

Kershaw is 29 years, 75 days old on Friday. Only four players were faster by age, led by Bert Blyleven at 28 years, 97 days old on July 12, 1979, when pitching for the Pirates he fanned Terry Puhl of the Astros to lead off the game in Houston for his 2,000th strikeout.

Kershaw’s steady climb to the top of the Dodgers franchise strikeout list saw him pass Koufax in 2019, then Don Drysdale in 2020. Two weeks after passing Drysdale, Kershaw got Nick Ahmed swinging for his 2,500th career strikeout.

The Dodgers first home interleague series of the season starts Friday night at Dodger Stadium, with the Tigers making their first visit to Los Angeles since 2014.

These two teams haven’t played at all since 2017, when the Dodgers took two of three games at Comerica Park in a series that saw Curtis Granderson make his Dodgers debut. The Dodgers lead the all-time series with the Tigers, which dates back to 2003, twelve games to ten, including 7-4 in Los Angeles.

Friday’s series opener features a first. There have only been three major leaguers named Tyler with a last name that starts with A. Two of them are pitchers, with the Dodgers’ Tyler Anderson and the Tigers’ Tyler Alexander scheduled to start on the mound. The other Tyler A., Tyler Austin, is a first baseman and outfielder who has not yet faced either Tyler A. pitcher.

Both Alexander and Anderson are left-handed pitchers, and both have the same middle name, John. Both pitchers have walked three batters and allowed one home run through three games this year, in 12⅔ innings for Anderson and 10 innings for Alexander.

The Dodgers also have Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler starting the final two games of the series. Detroit is going on Saturday with right-hander Beau Brieske, who made his major league debut last Saturday, and on Sunday the Tigers will start Eduardo Rodriguez, whose last game at Dodger Stadium saw him throw his glove down after allowing a World Series home run to Yasiel Puig (though it still worked out well for Rodriguez’s team later that evening).

Miguel Cabrera got his 3,000th hit on Saturday in Detroit, just the seventh player in major league history with 3,000 hits and 500 home runs. Through Wednesday night, Cabrera has 3,003 career hits. He also has 599 doubles, just one shy of becoming the 18th player with 600 doubles.

Detroit plays one more game in Minnesota on Thursday afternoon before heading to Los Angeles, while the Dodgers are off.

Cabrera is his career at Dodger Stadium has eight home runs and 17 RBI in 20 games, hitting .271/.342/.671.

This weekend is the final three games with 28-man rosters, before reducing active rosters to 26 players on Monday, with a limit of 14 pitchers through May 29, and 13 pitchers thereafter. Beginning Thursday (today), the Dodgers have three off days in eight days so they can pretty much use their bullpen with no restrictions this weekend.
