6 scoreless for National League ERA leader

Tony Gonsolin continued the steadiest run of his young career, pitching six scoreless innings to lead the Dodgers over the Mets, 2-0 on Thursday at Dodger Stadium, snapping a three-game losing streak for Los Angeles.

New York entered Thursday second in the majors in both runs scored per game (5.21) and wRC+ (118), second only to the Dodgers. The Mets led the majors in batting average (.268) and on-base percentage (.340), but managed only two hits and a walk in six innings against Gonsolin, who has emerged as the Dodgers’ best starter this season.

Gonsolin allowed only two Mets to reach second base, both with two outs, and he easily wiggled out of both jams. He struck out five on the night. Thursday was his fourth scoreless start of the year, and in 10 starts Gonsolin has allowed 10 total runs.

His 1.59 ERA leads the National League, or at least will for a day, as he has 51 innings pitches in the Dodgers’ 51 games.

But pitching deep is becoming more common for Gonsolin, at least in its most modern definition. Gonsolin never lasted six innings in consecutive outings before last month. Now, he’s gone six innings in each of his last four starts.

Half of Gonsolin’s starts this season have come at Dodger Stadium, where he has allowed only three runs in 27 innings. The Dodgers have won all five of Gonsolin’s home starts.

Gonsolin needed to be especially stingy in the series opener, because the Dodgers didn’t manage much against Taijuan Walker. They managed three consecutive one-out singles in the fifth to score the first run of the game. It was driven in by Mookie Betts, who with two hits had his third multi-hit game of this homestand.

Doubles by the Turners gave the Dodgers a second run in the sixth, with Justin driving in Trea. The double by Trea Turner to lead off the inning extended his hitting streak to 25 games. That’s the second-longest hit streak of Trea Turner’s career, trailing only the 27-game streak he had to end last season and stretching into this season. Since joining the Dodgers last July 30, Turner has the three longest hitting streaks of his career, along with a 16-gamer from last August 24 to September 9.

Craig Kimbrel, pitching on two days rest after blowing his first save of the season on Monday, had a scoreless ninth to close it out, snapping a string of three straight appearances allowing at least one run. Thursday marked his fourth clean inning in 17 appearances this season.

The Dodgers have four shutouts this season.

Pillar is weighing whether to have surgery

Dodgers outfielder Kevin Pillar finally got to play for his hometown team, but after four games he’s going to be out a long while. Testing revealed a fracture in Pillar’s left shoulder, and he was placed on the injured list on Thursday.

Pillar doubled in the fifth inning of Wednesday night’s game against the Pirates, then injured his shoulder in a slide at third base. He stayed in the game and scored, but was removed before the top of the sixth inning. After Wednesday’s game, manager Dave Roberts told reporters Pillar’s shoulder popped in and out of his socket twice during the game.

The timetable for Pillar’s return is yet to be determined, with a key determinant in what comes next is Pillar weighing whether to have surgery on the shoulder.

The 33-year-old hit .315/.412/.622 with a 153 wRC+, nine home runs and 18 extra-base hits in 36 games for Oklahoma City.

Pillar started four games for the Dodgers, three in left field and once in center field, going 1-for-12 with a walk and four strikeouts.

With Pillar on the shelf, the Dodgers recalled Zach McKinstry from Triple-A Oklahoma City for what is technically his fourth stint in the majors this season, though one of those was a one-day reprieve when he was optioned on April 24, only to be recalled before the game that day when David Price was placed on the COVID-related injured list.

In two games in the majors this year, both as a reserve, McKinstry lined out to right field in his only at-bat.

Michael Grove was optioned

The Dodgers recalled Caleb Ferguson from Triple-A Oklahoma City before Thursday’s game against the Mets at Dodger Stadium, adding a fresh arm to the bullpen for the final series of the club’s stretch of 31 games in 30 days.

Wednesday was the first day Ferguson could have returned after spending 15 days on optional assignment to the minors. Since getting sent down to Oklahoma City, Ferguson struck out eight of his 10 batters faced in four games, allowing only one walk and one hit by pitch, but no runs and no hits.

The left-hander last pitched on Saturday.

Ferguson began the season on the injured list while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He was activated on May 16 and pitched a scoreless inning for the Dodgers against Arizona, his first major league appearance since September 15, 2020.

Michael Grove was optioned to Triple-A to make room on the active roster for Ferguson. Grove is a starter, but was brought up Saturday for long relief coverage just in case. Grove pitched in one of the five games in which he was active in his second big league stint, including allowing three runs in an inning of mop-up duty in the ninth inning Wednesday against the Pirates.

Mets bring 6-game winning streak to Dodger Stadium

After a rare three-game sweep at home to the Pirates, the Dodgers continue their homestand Thursday. Francisco Lindor and the NL East-leading Mets arrive in California for four games. The Big Apple crew takes on Mookie Betts and the NL West-leading Dodgers, a showdown of the National League’s top two teams. This four-game series between the two potential playoff contenders could be a NLCS preview.

The Dodgers (33-17) and the Mets (35-17) hold the two best records in the National League. The two clubs’ offenses are some of the best in baseball, but the Dodgers have the better run differential (+112) over the Mets (+77).

The Mets’ offense really glowed up since last season. They lead the majors in batting average (.268) and on-base percentage (.340) and rank second in OPS (.749) to the Dodgers’ .769 OPS.

Coming off a 6-0 homestand against the Phillies and the Nationals, the Mets start a much tougher 10-game road trip against the Dodgers, Padres and Angels. The Dodgers are coming off a disappointing series sweep to the Pirates and look to get back to the winning column.

Mets Taijuan Walker (3-0, 2.83, 1.257 WHIP) gets the ball against fellow right-hander Tony Gonsolin (5-0, 1.80, 0.933 WHIP) in the opener. In his career, Walker has struck out 20 in 23 innings pitched at Dodger Stadium. He’s never allowed a home run at Chavez Ravine. Betts is hitting .400 against Walker. Cody Bellinger, Will Smith and Freddie Freeman each have hit a home run vs. Walker.

Gonsolin looks to scratch out another win. He’s figured out how to pitch more efficiently and deeper into games. This has allowed the Dodgers to weather the temporary loss of Clayton Kershaw. Tony will have to be wary of Eduardo Escobar who has hit two homers off him in the past.
