Dodgers’ second great MLB debut in four days

On this morning’s Leading Off with True Blue LA podcast, Miguel Vargas had the Dodgers second great major league debut in four days, driving in the first two runs of LA’s 3-0 win over the Giants on Wednesday night. The man oozes confidence, evident when asked by reporters why he stole third base on his own in the second inning.

Vargas doubled, singled, drove in two runs, and stole a base. He’s just the second Dodger to debut with at least those numbers, joining Casey Stengel in 1912.

If we take away the stolen base component, Vargas is the 11th Dodgers debuter with at least two hits and two RBI, along with James Outman three days earlier. Also on that list is Rob Segedin in his 2016 debut.

Segedin on Wednesday also shared this great story on Instagram of when his wife had their first child in 2016, and took the baby up to see Vin Scully and his wife Sandra in the booth before a game.

This kind of sharing was typical of the last 36 hours since Sully died, with an outpouring of love and memories from so many people. It was great to see. We’ll dive deeper into Vin Scully on a longer The Lineup episode later today.

The Dodgers on Wednesday wore patches honoring Scully, with “Vin” and a microphone on the sleeve. In addition, Scully will be honored before Friday’s homestand opener against the Padres at Dodger Stadium. I expect many tears will flow.

The Dodgers shutout the Giants for a 3-0 win

Miguel Vargas drove in a run with his first major league at-bat, and Julio Urías tossed six innings of scoreless ball, but the man of the night was none other than Evan Phillips. The Dodgers reliever continues to prove his worth by pitching with ice on his veins in the most stressful of situations.

Urías secured his 11th win of the season in this 3-0 win over the Giants, but he probably owes Phillips at least a top-of-the-line dinner following the ways things ended for Urías in the seventh inning.

The Dodgers pitching staff lost Walker Buehler a couple of months ago, and nothing about their season would hint towards having both the best record in the big leagues, and one of the best starting rotations since their ace went down.

Those statements above aren’t a knock on Buehler by any stretch, the team does in fact miss him a lot. However, Urías has done a far more than adequate job of filling in the role as the workhorse of the staff.

Tony Gonsolin and Tyler Anderson are pleasant surprises with All-Star first halves, and Clayton Kershaw is still Clayton Kershaw, but the staple of this rotation — which he keeps proving with nights like this — is Urías. Even if it took a major hand from relief ace Phillips for a clean final line.

Urías was cruising through six innings with only four hits allowed and no walks but ultimately left the mound with a bitter taste in his mouth as he allowed the first three batters in the bottom of the seventh to reach on singles, loading the bases.

All of a sudden the go-ahead run was at the plate, and Urías was out of the game on the hook for three baserunners. That bitter taste Urías had though was soon sweetened by Phillips, the MVP of team.

On back-to-back nights Dave Roberts has called upon his best reliever for the most crucial spot one can possibly enter in a baseball game, the bases loaded with no outs, and for the second night in a row, Phillips came in and stranded the house, getting all three outs without allowing a run.

The Dodgers’ fireman reliever struck out Dixon Machado in commanding fashion with just three pitches and got a double-play ball when the runner from second took off early on a soft flyout to Mookie Betts.

Is Phillips the most important player on the Dodgers? Probably not. However, you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone that elevated their status into such a pivotal role quite like he did. This bullpen relies on him like no other facet of the team does on any player.

The offense did just enough against Alex Cobb for a couple of early runs in the second and fourth inning including a beautiful double towards triple’s alley by the debutant of the night Miguel Vargas to drive in Trayce Thompson after falling behind 0-2 in the count, but overall, the Giants’ starter had a more than a solid night with eight punchouts over six and a third innings, allowing three runs.

Yency Almonte took care of the eighth inning and continues to rise up the ranks of the Dodgers’ pen, in fact, if he qualified, Almonte would have a top 5 ERA among all relievers in baseball with his minuscule 1.15 ERA mark.

The Craig Kimbrel special came in at full effect as the Dodgers’ closer managed to make things extremely interesting by loading the bases with one out in the ninth, but like we’ve seen many times, he eventually got the job done with a flyout and a strikeout to end the game, even if he made it much more thrilling than it needed to be.

Tonight marked the first night all year in which the big three of Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, and Freddie Freeman all played, all didn't get a hit, and the Dodgers still wound up victorious. Encouraging to see the bottom of the order getting the job done.

With the win, the Dodgers mark their second consecutive series win over the Giants since that sweep they suffered in San Francisco in mid-June and could go for a second four-game sweep against their bitter rivals after sweeping them earlier in the month in Los Angeles.

Miguel Vargas makes his major league debut, starting at DH

The Dodgers on Wednesday activated Joey Gallo, their lone position player acquired at the trade deadline, before the third game of their four-game set against the Giants in San Francisco. But he’s not in the starting lineup.

Miguel Vargas is starting, at designated hitter and batting seventh in his major league debut. Vargas, one of the Dodgers’ top prospects, was called up Tuesday, and arrived at the stadium around game time.

Gallo takes the open spot on the active roster created Tuesday when third baseman Justin Turner was placed on the injured list with an abdominal strain.

Gallo won Gold Gloves the last two years playing right field for the Rangers and Yankees, and his experience in the outfield gave him the edge over Jake Lamb for a roster spot. Now it’s just about determining what Gallo’s role will be.

But the key is his bat, with the Dodgers looking to get something closer to the hitter whose 151 home runs ranked sixth in the majors from 2017-21 with a 117 OPS+ rather than the one hitting just .159/.282/.339 this season.

“A year ago he was worth a lot in the industry. He got traded for a lot. The true talent level remains,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said on a conference call Tuesday. “We feel like getting him here with our guys, there’s a real compelling upside story. For us, it was lengthening our position player base to cover for unforeseen things that could pop up in August, September, October.”

Despite his struggles at the plate, Gallo has actually been roughly league-average against right-handed pitching this season, hitting .178/.302/.397 with a 102 wRC+. He has two hits in seven at-bats in his career against Cobb, including a home run in 2018.

Gallo won’t start in the outfield on Wednesday, but fellow left-hander James Outman — he of the seven times reaching base in his first eight times to the plate — will start in left field, batting eighth.

Trayce Thompson is in center field against Giants right-hander Alex Cobb.

The home team has won all nine LA-SF games this season

The Dodgers and Giants meet for a fourth time this season, with a four-game series beginning Monday night at Oracle Park in San Francisco. So far this season, the home team has won all nine matchups between the two longtime rivals.

San Francisco swept the Dodgers in their first trip north this season, holding Los Angeles to four total runs over three games from June 10-12. The Dodgers have won all six games against the Giants at Dodger Stadium, including a four-game sweep coming out of the All-Star break a week and a half ago.

These two teams drifted apart in July, with the Dodgers going 21-5, tied for the fourth-best July winning percentage in over a century. The Giants were just 11-17 for the month, but San Francisco is on a mini hot streak of sorts. They lost seven straight coming out of the break before beating the Cubs in three out of four games over the weekend.

Playoff positioning

The Dodger lead the third-place Giants by 17½ games in the National League West, with a 100-percent chance to reach the playoffs for Los Angeles, per FanGraphs, and a 98.7-percent chance to win the division.

San Francisco’s tailspin has them at 51-51, the eighth-best record in the NL, with six teams advancing to the postseason. The Phillies (55-47) hold the third wild card spot entering Monday, up one game on the Cardinals and four games on the Giants. FanGraphs gives San Francisco a 22.9-percent chance to reach the postseason.

Kershaw fact

Clayton Kershaw is slated to start Thursday afternoon’s series finale, in what will be his 26th career start and 28th game pitched in San Francisco. He is 14-6 with a 1.58 ERA at Oracle Park, with 169 strikeouts in 182 innings.

He allowed two runs in four innings in SF on June 11, his first start back off the injured list after missing a month with right SI joint inflammation.

Recent moves

The Dodgers acquired reliever Chris Martin from the Cubs on Saturday. The right-hander was activated Sunday but did not pitch, so expect him to make his Dodgers debut at some point in San Francisco.

James Outman was called up to take the traded Zach McKinstry’s roster spot, and homered as part of a three-hit major league debut on Sunday.

Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford is on the injured list with left knee inflammation but isn’t back just yet, and Thairo Estrada landed on the concussion IL on Sunday. San Francisco traded for 30-year-old Dixon Machado to fill in at shortstop. Machado was on a minor league deal with the Cubs after playing the last two years for Lotte in the Korean Baseball Organization. Machado played parts of four seasons with the majors (2015-18) with the Tigers, hitting .227/.285/.295 in 505 plate appearances.

Justin Turner, still dealing with abdominal tightness, isn’t expected to play in this series until Thursday at the earliest, as Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register wrote in his Sunday notes column.

Television

Tuesday’s game is on TBS nationally, with Brian Anderson and Jeff Francoeur on the call, joined by reporter Allie LaForce. It’s a full national telecast for TBS, which means no local blackouts. The game will also be televised locally by SportsNet LA.

Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon will be shown on MLB Network, but only for folks outside the local markets.
