The Dodgers lose three straight for the first time since June

The Dodgers were defeated 7-1 by the San Diego Padres and dropped their third straight game in the series opener at Dodger Stadium. Dustin May had never allowed more than three runs in a start through 33 major-league games until Friday night. Three multi-run home runs against May put the Dodgers in a 7-0 hole they couldn’t dig their way out of.

Mayday

May had poor command in his third start for the Dodgers since returning from Tommy John surgery. He allowed a pair of two-run home runs in the third, walked five and hit two batters.

May walked Juan Soto and Manny Machado consecutively with one out in the top of the first. May jammed Josh Bell with an effective cutter to induce a pop out and the second out. Then the comeback kid struck out Jake Cronenworth looking with a curveball to end the threat.

Missed Opportunities with RISP

The Dodgers only mustered two hits off Darvish through the first seven frames, and they left six men on base.

The first base hit off old friend Darvish came on a Max Muncy leadoff single in the bottom of the second. Chris Taylor drew a walk, and Cody Bellinger got a big opportunity with a runner in scoring position. Darvish struck out Bellinger swinging with his four-seam fastball, and he escaped unscathed.

The Padres got to May for four runs on two home runs in the top of the third. Manny Machado hit his 25th home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-center field to give the Padres a 2-0 lead. Then Brandon Drury doubled their lead with a two-run home run of his own.

Justin Turner’s two-out double in the fourth was his 30th double of the season to extend his current hitting streak to 12 games. Gallo got another opportunity, but he was called out on strikes.

After May’s fifth walk of the night, Dave Roberts pulled him in the top of the sixth. Heath Hembree came in out of the Dodgers’ bullpen, and things started off well. He struck out Ha-Seong Kim and Austin Nola. It looked as though Hembree was going to get out of the inning. Then Jurickson Profar hit a three-run homer to center field to open the game wide open 7-0 for the Padres.

Phil Bickford pitched two scoreless innings, but the Dodgers’ bats never woke up until it was too late. The Dodgers had all but given up when they brought in Hanser Alberto to pitch the ninth.

The Dodgers will play the Padres nine times this month

The Dodgers look for their first win in September when they open a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium Friday night. The Dodgers dropped two straight games to the New York Mets at Citi Field. The Padres are fresh off a sweep of the San Francisco Giants plus an off day.

Old friend Yu Darvish (11-7, 3.41 ERA, 5.25 K/BB) takes on fellow right-hander Dustin May (1-1, 1.64 ERA, 13 K) in the series opener. May’s making his third start for the Dodgers since returning from Tommy John surgery. Last time out against the Miami Marlins, May went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk (86 pitches.)

Jake Cronenworth and old friend Manny Machado have both hit home runs against May in the past.

Conversely, nearly everyone in the Dodgers’ lineup has hit at least one home run off Darvish. Austin Barnes, Cody Bellinger, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman (2), Will Smith, Justin Turner, and Trea Turner have all taken Darvish deep.

Overall, in his career, Darvish is 2-5 with a 2.78 ERA in nine career starts against the Dodgers. At Dodger Stadium, he’s had some bumpy starts and has allowed 10 home runs in nine starts against his former team.

Trea Turner is out of the lineup for the first time in 130 games for a long coming scheduled day off. The Dodgers had Gavin Lux slated to play at shortstop, but revised the lineup with Hanser Alberto at short instead. Lux is still dealing with some back issues. Freddie Freeman moves up to second in Dave Roberts’ lineup. Will Smith hits third with Max Muncy in the cleanup spot.

Jake Reed was designated for assignment

Blake Treinen was activated off the 60-day injured list by the Dodgers before Friday’s series opener against the Padres at Dodger Stadium, after the right-hander missed 4½ months with shoulder inflammation. He adds another high-leverage arm to a bullpen that’s been without him since April.

The final five weeks of the season will determine exactly what the Dodgers are getting back, but in 2020-21 Treinen was the anchor of the bullpen, with a 2.48 ERA and 2.95 FIP with 107 strikeouts in 98 innings. Pitching nearly 80 percent of his innings in the seventh and eighth gave Treinen the second-highest average leverage in each of the last two seasons, behind only closer Kenley Jansen.

Treinen led the Dodgers in 2020 and 2021 in both games on zero days rest and multi-inning appearances. This year, which included four months without pitching, he’s pitched on back-to-back days twice — once in April while active, and again this last week while with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The entire point of minor league rehab assignment is to get ready for the majors, but if you’re into results, Treinen struck out nine with no intentional walks in six innings in his seven games with Oklahoma City, allowing five runs (three earned).

While on rehab, Treinen threw his sinker 39 times, per Statcast, averaging 95.5 mph, maxing out in the 97s in three of his seven starts. For comparison, he averaged 97.4 mph on the pitch in 2021.

Treinen returns to a bullpen that has done quite well in his absence, ranking third in the majors in ERA (3.10), second in FIP (3.29), and topping MLB in strikeout-minus-walk ratio (18.7 percent). But it also comes on the day Brusdar Graterol got an MRI exam on his right elbow, with his availability for this season very much in doubt.

The last month of the season will be about getting ready for October, which for the Dodgers means figuring out which of the injured relievers are healthy and effective enough to pitch in October. The injured list currently includes Yency Almonte, Victor González, Tommy Kahnle, and Danny Duffy, the last three currently on rehab in Triple-A.

There’s room to add them in a bullpen that currently includes Heath Hembree and Phil Bickford. Jake Reed was the roster casualty to make room for Treinen, getting designated for assignment which cleared space on both the active and 40-man rosters, the latter required since Treinen was on the 60-day injured list.

Reed was called up Tuesday and pitched in first of three games in New York, earning his first career save with a scoreless inning.

LA plays SD in three series over the next four weeks

The Dodgers play the Padres for three series and nine games over the next four weeks. The first of these National League West meetings begins Friday night at Dodger Stadium.

After suffering their first series loss in over five weeks, the Dodgers enter the weekend at 90-40, with an 18-game lead over San Diego in the National League West. LA’s magic number to clinch their ninth division in ten years is 14, which means it’s going to be a little bit before the NL West is officially won. The earliest the Dodgers can clinch is next Friday, September 9.

The Dodgers are 8-2 against the Padres this season, and with no more Games 163, winning the head-to-head battle is the first tiebreaker should the two teams end up tied atop the NL West. That’s a long way of saying if Los Angeles beats San Diego two more times this year, they will clinch the season series, and in the process lowering their magic number by one.

The Padres are currently in the final wild card position at 73-59, but they are mired in a three-team race with the Phillies (73-58) and Brewers (69-61) for two playoff berths. San Diego is a half-game behind Philadelphia for the No. 5 seed, and three games up on Milwaukee, who is on the outside looking in at the moment.

San Diego comes to town having won five of their last six games, including a three-game sweep of the Giants in San Francisco.

The Padres were off Thursday, but among their two September call-ups as rosters expanded to 28 players was old friend Matt Beaty, who was traded by the Dodgers on March 28. Beaty struggled in the early going this year, going 4-for-37 (.108) with a double and a triple before landing on the injured list in May with a left shoulder impingement, which knocked him out for nearly three months.

Blake Treinen is expected to be activated by the Dodgers on Friday, after seven minor league rehab games in Triple-A. The right-hander has been sidelined since April with shoulder inflammation.

In addition to this weekend in Los Angeles, the Dodgers and Padres play two more series in San Diego — next weekend (September 9-11) and September 27-29 at Petco Park.

The series finale Sunday night will be exclusively televised by ESPN, with Karl Ravech, David Cone, and Eduardo Perez on the call, along with reporter Alden Gonzalez. The Dodgers have won all three games on ESPN ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ this season, including a win over the Padres at Dodger Stadium on August 7.
