Duo combined for 7 hits, 3 homers

The Dodgers tailed 4-0 after one inning, but J.D. Martinez and Freddie Freeman powered Los Angeles to an 8-6 win over the Braves in what felt like the opener of a playoff series on Monday night at Truist Park in Atlanta.

J.D. Martinez homered twice, part of a career-high-tying four hits, and scored three runs. It was his first multi-hit game since returning from missing 15 games with back tightness.

Monday marked Martinez’s 17th four-hit game, including the postseason.

The Dodgers chipped away at the early four-run deficit with the first Martinez homer in the second inning, two more runs in the fourth, then finally took the lead on a three-run home run by Freddie Freeman in the fifth.

Freeman, who got a long standing ovation before his first at-bat, doubled earlier in the game — his National League-leading 18th of the season — in addition to the home run. He has 18 extra-base hits (12 doubles, five home runs, a triple) in 20 games so far in May.

Freeman also singled, and his 12 game-hit streak includes nine multi-hit games.

The close game added to the raucous atmosphere, and Marcell Ozuna hitting Will Smith on the helmet with a back swing in the fourth inning turned up the intensity. Smith understandably took offense even if it was an accident, as the catcher already missed 13 games this year with a concussion.

Bullpens emptied, though only briefly, and the discussion between Smith and Ozuna even continued into the sixth.

Gavin Stone’s second major league start had a big inning against him, just like his first start did. Five batters into the game, he was down 4-0. Eddie Rosario’s three-run home run was the big blow, and an indoctrination of sorts for Stone into True Dodger status. Rosario, who ran roughshod over Los Angeles while winning the 2021 NLCS MVP, has 11 extra-base hits, including six home runs in 15 career games against the Dodgers, hitting .444/.483/.889.

The little things

Slow reaction time costed the Dodgers early, like when James Outman’s first step was in on a Ronald Acuña Jr. drive that went over his head for a leadoff double in the first. Acuña scored on a Sean Murphy single in what was a four-run frame against Stone. With Outman at the plate in the third inning, he was hit in the leg by a pitch from Charlie Morton but it was instead called a ball. The Dodgers took longer than the 15 seconds allowed to challenge a play, and Outman eventually struck out.

Stone after a 34-pitch first inning only needed 37 pitches to get through the next three, and by the time the fifth inning started he had a lead. But the win for Stone was not to be, as he walked Acuña and Olson on eight pitches to open the frame, ending his night after four-plus innings. Even worse, the Dodgers infield was caught sleeping after the second walk, and Acuña easily stole the vacant third base without a throw. That led to Atlanta’s fifth run against Stone.

After seven games of Dodgers starting pitchers averaging exactly 11 outs per game, Stone recorded 12 on Monday.

That he didn’t allow more than five runs was thanks to Evan Phillips entering at his earliest point of the season, brought into face the heart of the lineup, plus stellar defensive plays by Miguel Rojas at shortstop and Outman with a diving catch in center to keep the Dodgers ahead.

Rojas had two hits and scored two runs out of the nine spot in the batting order, his second straight two-hit game. But most importantly Rojas was part of three double plays, starting two of them and turning another, showing the importance of strong defense at shortstop from someone who actually plays there regularly.

Relievers Phillips, Caleb Ferguson, Yency Almonte, Phil Bickford, and Brusdar Graterol combined to allow one run over the final five innings.

Tayler Scott up from Triple-A as the fresh arm in the bullpen

Clayton Kershaw was placed on the bereavement list by the Dodgers on Monday, leaving the team to be home with his family after the death of his mother Marianne.

Kershaw’s mother passed away on May 13, and the left-hander made two starts since.

He allowed six runs on 12 hits in 7⅔ innings, with 13 strikeouts and four walks, losing to both the Twins and Cardinals.
“He said after the last [start] there was fatigue, just body fatigue. We were hoping that that was just a one-time deal, and he would come back and reset in this one,” manager Dave Roberts told reporters in St. Louis on Sunday, per SportsNet LA. “I haven’t talked to him yet, but it showed a lot of similarities to that last one as far as fatigue.

“I know health-wise he’s fine, but the fact of the matter is that the ball just wasn’t coming out like we’re used to these last two [starts].”

Roberts also said Kershaw would be back to start against the Rays on Saturday, which would be on five days rest. MLB bereavement list is a minimum of three days, and can last up to seven days.

After last Tuesday’s start against the Twins was when Kershaw first spoke publicly about his mother’s death, and he thanked those who offered condolences.

“It’s been humbling to see how many people have reached out. I’m thankful for that,” he said. “She was a great lady, and thank you to everybody that reached out.”

The Dodgers called up Tayler Scott from Triple-A as a fresh arm in relief. Room on the 40-man roster was made with Wander Suero getting designated for assignment.

Scott had a 1.08 ERA in 16 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City, with 20 strikeouts and 10 walks in 16⅔ innings. He last pitched on Saturday, striking out two of his four batters faced in 1⅓ innings.

The right-hander from South Africa was a non-roster invitee in spring training after signing a minor league deal with the Dodgers in January. Scott pitched in parts of two seasons in the majors, in 2019 with the Mariners and Orioles and in 2022 with the Padres, with an 11.12 ERA in 28⅓ innings, with 27 strikeouts and 17 walks.

In between, Scott pitched two years for Hiroshima in Japan, with a 4.02 ERA, 68 strikeouts, and 20 walks in 71⅔ innings. Scott, who is wearing number 61, turns 31 years old on June 1.

Wander Suero was designated for assignment

The Dodgers recalled Gavin Stone from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday to start the series opener against the Braves. Stone’s second major league start is expected to be a runway for the right-hander, filling in for the injured Dustin May in the Dodgers rotation.

In his major league debut on May 3 against the Phillies, Stone allowed five runs (four earned) in four innings. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters in St. Louis on Sunday that Stone has moved past the first-start jitters. From Joe Harris at MLB.com:

“I think the unfamiliarity, the novelty of it, I think that we’ve already done that,” Roberts said. “And I think he’s thrown the baseball better in general. The changeup is better, the fastball command is better. So, I just think that that second time around, I think that he’ll be a lot more comfortable than he was the first time.”

In his last four starts for Oklahoma City, including two before his major league debut and two after, Stone has a 1.74 ERA with 29 strikeouts and 11 walks in 20⅔ innings. That includes striking out 10 in 5⅔ innings against Sugar Land last Tuesday, both season highs for the right-hander.

To make room for Stone on the active roster, the Dodgers designated Wander Suero for assignment.

Suero has pitched in low-leverage situation in his four games with the Dodgers during his two stints in the majors this month, with an 8.10 ERA in 6⅔ innings, and seven strikeouts against four walks. Suero threw 39 pitches in two innings on Sunday in St. Louis, allowing three runs.

Injuries to Dustin May and Julio Urías have set the stage for the Dodgers’ top two pitching prospects, Gavin Stone and Bobby Miller, to start Monday and Tuesday, respectively in Atlanta.

From Jack Harris at the Los Angeles Times:

“It’s a great opportunity for these young pitchers,” said Roberts, despite not being able to announce Miller’s debut officially. “They’re both talented. It’s not what we expected. But that doesn’t really matter. The only way to look at it is, you’ve got to embrace this opportunity for these guys.”

Tuesday will be Miller’s major league debut. He was slowed by shoulder soreness during spring, and since joining Triple-A Oklahoma City has a 5.65 ERA in four starts. His best outing was last Wednesday with six strong inning against Sugar Land, allowing only one run while striking out six.

Stone will make his second major league start, having debuted on May 3. Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Stone will get an extended look in May’s spot in the rotation.

“I think the unfamiliarity, the novelty of it, I think that we’ve already done that,” Roberts said of Stone, per Joe Harris of MLB.com. “And I think he’s thrown the baseball better in general. The changeup is better, the fastball command is better. So, I just think that that second time around, I think that he’ll be a lot more comfortable than he was the first time.”

Since his major league debut, the right-hander allowed four runs (three earned) in 11 innings, with 14 strikeouts. That included a season-high 10 strikeouts in a season-high 5⅔ innings last Tuesday.

Miller and Stone started the season eighth and ninth on the rotation depth chart, and they were expected to contribute at some point this year. It just came a little earlier than expected with four starters on the injured list.

From Bill Plunkett at the Orange County Register:

“It’s not what we expected. But that doesn’t really matter,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of turning to the two prospects so early in the season. “So I think the only way to look at it is we’ve got to embrace this opportunity for these guys, and it’s up to all of us to make them comfortable and able to perform at a high level, because it shouldn’t be on … (them) to carry the brunt of it. It’s not.”

Stone and Miller will both be pitching against the Braves on five days rest.
