The Dodgers lost their third straight game on Saturday in Peoria.

The Dodgers dropped their third straight game on Saturday with a 9-5 loss to the Mariners in Peoria. Chris Capuano and Chad Billingsley each allowed three runs in their second appearance of the spring, but we are still in that point in the spring where process matters more than results.

"Bills gets work, Cap gets work," was the postgame summary from manager Don Mattingly.

Capuano started and retired the first six batters he faced, including three via strikeout. But the seventh batter was Mike Zunino, the 22-year-old catcher rated as the 17th best prospect in the game by Baseball America. Zunino went deep to break up Capuano's fun, then three batters later Franklin Gutierrez took Capuano deep for a two-run shot to tie the game at 3-3.

Gutierrez struck again in the fourth inning, this time with a double against Chad Billingsley to drive home two. Billingsley allowed three runs on five hits and a walk in his 2⅓ innings, and was removed before his scheduled three innings with a pitch count of 48. He struck out two.

Daily Puig Update

Yasiel Puig impressed in a couple of ways on Saturday. He lined a double to the center field wall, his third of the spring. He showed off his speed as he turned on the jets, looking to turn it into a possible triple, but quickly picked up third base coach Tim Wallach, who held him at second on the play.

"He made a good decision at second base, stopping there," Mattingly said.

Puig is hitting .389 (7-for-18) in the early going, and Mattingly gets asked nearly every day about Puig, sometimes more than once. But what if Puig, with all of 23 games of professional experience after a year and a half without playing organized baseball, continues to impress during spring training? Might he then be used as a temporary replacement if Carl Crawford opens the season on the disabled list?

"If he continues to do what he's doing, you'd have to look at things like that, but honestly it's a real good chance of sending somebody going in the wrong direction. You end up getting yourself in trouble. You want to develop," Mattingly said. "He's a kid still, and he's still raw. You don't want to see a guy get beat up. Maybe he never struggles, but that's usually not the case. Usually the guy has to go through some stuff, and that's when he develops.

"We don't have to make any decisions right now. He's going to continue to get at-bats. He's fun to watch, I like putitng him in there, and I've played him all over."

Puig is the only Dodger to play in a Cactus League game every day this spring.

Notes

Andre Ethier was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning by Oliver Perez, but was fine after the game. "It looked like it nicked him," said Mattingly. "It scared him a little. Any time Oliver is in there, you're not sure. I know he wasn't trying to hit him, but he's all over."

Ethier also went 2-for-2 with an RBI triple off the center field wall, just out of the reach of Gutierrez.

Dallas McPherson leads the club with 30 innings at first this season, but the former third baseman, but his fielding at the position has been subpar to date. He made a throwing error on Saturday and failed to scoop another throw. "His defense has been good, but it hasn't been great," Mattingly said. "But in fairness to him he's playing a position secondary to him."

The Dodgers made three errors as a team, and a few other misplays that weren't counted as errors, and Mattingly said it was something to address. "It looks sloppy from our guys. It's something you continue to work on. As the games go on, the fields are going to get worse and worse here. They get dried out and get hot and just get hard," he said.

The Dodgers play two games on Friday, Mar. 8, with one split squad game in the afternoon in Scottsdale against the Giants, followed by a night game at home against the Reds. That is Josh Beckett's turn to pitch in the rotation, and Mattingly said Beckett would face the Reds in part to avoid giving the division rivals from San Francisco any extra live looks at his starting pitcher.

Home run for life

Before the game the Mariners honored a fan named Walter Weaver, a cancer survivor who has been free of the disease for a year. Both the Mariners and Dodgers lined up on the foul lines and watched as Weaver ran around the bases in a promotion called a "home run for life."

Up Next

The Dodgers stay home at Camelback Ranch on Sunday as they host the Indians. Beckett gets the start for Los Angeles, while Corey Kluber pitches for Cleveland.

Manager Don Mattingly said he would likely use a platoon in place of Carl Crawford while the left fielder is out.

With Carl Crawford out a week while dealing with minor nerve irritation in his left arm, thoughts turn to possible replacements in left field should Crawford not be able to be ready for opening day. But Crawford, who was said to have felt much better on Saturday than he felt earlier in the week, might not be ready to concede his lack of readiness by Apr. 1.

Yasiel Puig gets the start in left field for the Dodgers on Saturday as they take on the Mariners, but the Dodgers don't see the 22-year-old Cuban as even a temporary replacement for Crawford, yet, given Puig's relative lack of game action in the last two years.

When asked who might fill in for Crawford in left field in April should he not be ready for opening day, Mattingly said he would platoon the right-handed hitting Jerry Hairston Jr. and the left-handed hitting Skip Schumaker, echoing his sentiments from the very first day of pitchers and catchers reporting to camp.

"Jerry we felt like always was going to be the guy to give Andre (Ethier) a break, or give Carl a break, against the nasty lefty if we're going to give them a day off now and then. We know Schu plays all three outfield positions," Mattingly said. "If you're asking me today off the top of my head, those two guys give me a left/right situation for left field."

Mattingly said he would get Schumaker more looks in left field as spring training goes on. Thus far, Schumaker has only played center field and second base.

Mattingly was asked if the organization would rather have the raw Puig start in the minor leagues than replace Crawford in left field he said, "Yeah, that's a good way to look at it."

Notes

Mattingly confirmed on Saturday that Matt Kemp would be the designated hitter on Sunday as the Dodgers host the Indians at Camelback Ranch.

Following Chris Capuano on the mound for the Dodgers on Saturday will be Chad Billingsley, Ronald Belisario, Brandon League, and J.P. Howell.

One player from Dodgers minor league camp made the trip to Peoria: right-handed pitcher Ryan Acosta, wearing number 82. As Evan Chavez from I Bleed Dodger Blue reminded me, Acosta is the son of New Mexico native and former Yankees coach Oscar Acosta.

Hisashi Iwakuma starts for the Mariners, and among his scheduled mound followers are Jeremy Bonderman and Oliver Perez. (Let my) Kameron Loe, D.J. Mitchell, and Chance Ruffin are also scheduled to pitch for Seattle.

In addition, the four Mariners who recorded six outs in the seventh and eighth innings of their June 8 no-hitter against the Dodgers last season are all scheduled to pitch today: League for the Dodgers; Charlie Furbush, Stephen Pryor, and Lucas Luetge for Seattle.

Brian Barden gets his first look at first base on Saturday, the first Dodger other than Adrian Gonzalez (five starts) and Juan Uribe (three starts) to start at the position so far this spring. Barden, who is 7-for-11 (.636) with two walks and a .692 on-base percentage, has played 12 innings in right field, five innings at third base, five innings at second base, and four innings in left field in Cactus League play.

Tommy Davis and Ron Cey will arrive in Camelback Ranch on Friday, Mar. 8 and spend a few days in camp as guest instructors.

Yasiel Puig and Dee Gordon have played every day of spring so far for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers head to Peoria on Saturday to battle the Mariners, and will do so without Matt Kemp. Per the advice of team trainer Sue Falsone, manager Don Mattingly won't play Kemp one day after he made his spring training debut, going 0-for-2 in Friday's split squad loss to the Padres at Camelback Ranch.

Mattingly said the plan was for Kemp to play Sunday, likely again at designated hitter. Coupled with Monday's day off, the earliest Kemp could play consecutive days would be Tuesday and Wednesday. He could play center field on Tuesday.

Though Kemp won't make the bus trip north to Peoria, 27 players from major league camp will. Here is the travel roster that was posted in the Dodgers clubhouse for Saturday's 12:05 p.m. PT game against Seattle:

Pitchers (6): Chris Capuano, Chad Billingsley, Ronald Belisario, J.P.
