Puig is batting .391 (9-for-23) in 11 games so far this spring, including a single in three at-bats on Wednesday against the Indians in Goodyear.

With a pair of split squad games on Wednesday, Yasiel Puig wasn't the only part of the Dodgers future on display. The Dodgers had their Baseball America top six prospects in action in Cactus League play, including No. 1 Hyun-jin Ryu striking out five in his three innings of work against the Indians in Goodyear.

But since this section isn't called the Daily Lee or the Daily Joc, let's start with Puig, who started in left field for the Dodgers in Goodyear.

Puig was 1-for-3 with an infield single and two strikeouts, including his first two at-bats against Justin Masterson, whom manager Don Mattingly called a tough righty. Mattingly called Puig batting third just another test for the 22-year-od Cuban outfielder.

In one of his two strikeouts, Puig worked the count full before succumbing, and drew praise from his manager.

"I thought he made good adjustments. One thing I've noticed, if he stays in the strike zone he doesn't really miss too much. He's not a swing and miss guy, in the strike zone. He might swing out of the strike zone and miss, chasing a little bit. But when he's in the strike zone he's usually putting a bat on it," Mattingly said. "He's short to the ball. It's interesting watching a big power guy like that. The issue will end up being, can he keep guys in the strike zone."

In the fourth inning, with Mark Reynolds on second base catcher Yan Gomes grounded a single to Puig in left field. Puig threw the ball into third base instead of second, and Gomes was able to easily advance to second base. But Mattingly said it was just part of the growth process.

"He's just got to get that in. He just kind of lobbed it in. It's kind of like the other day trying to go to second on a play. We haven't seen him do it since, and he's run the bases better," Mattingly said. "On those kind of plays, it's just explanation, getting what we want, and then him not making the same mistake. He seems really smart, and that's where we have to teach, to get what we want."

Corey Seager, ranked No. 3 by Baseball America, played shortstop and was 1-for-2 with a run-scoring single and scored a run in his first ever spring training game.

No. 4 Joc Pederson struck out in his only at-bat in Goodyear

No. 5 Zach Lee allowed four hits and an unearned run, but also lasted two innings and struck out a batter against Mexico.

No. 6 Chris Reed retired all three batters he faced, including one strikeout, against the Indians in Goodyear.

Converted pitcher Pedro Baez made the trip to Goodyear but did not pitch against Cleveland.

Ryu struck out five and pitched into the fourth inning on Wednesday as the Dodgers lost to the Indians 4-0 in Goodyear.

There is a delicate balance of confidence versus trepidation with the Dodgers and Hyun-jin Ryu. On one hand, the franchise invested nearly $62 million over six seasons in the left-hander. But there is also the relative unknown that other than video the Dodgers coaching staff simply haven't seen much of the soon-to-be-26-year-old hurler.

But what manager Don Mattingly and pitching coach Rick Honeycutt saw of Ryu was pleasing to the eye, as the left-hander struck out five in his three innings of work in the Dodgers' 4-0 loss to the Indians in Goodyear. He didn't give up any runs until the fourth inning, when both of his bequeathed runners came around to score.

"With Hyun-jin it was just tough because we haven't seen this guy at the major league level," Mattingly said. "I know we've seen some video tape, but like we said this morning, how are hitters going to react to him? Today showed that this guy knows what he's doing. He knows how to change speeds, he pitches quick. For us, we just want to see it."

Ryu was pleased, especially with his first three scoreless frames.

"Everything was alright, satisfactory. But going into the fourth inning, I had 10 pitches left. I kind of lost focus. I wanted to try to finish it in 10 pitches. I felt I kind of rushed myself."

Both Mattingly and catcher A.J. Ellis praised Ryu's fastball.

"The thing that stood out to me, especially in the last couple of innings, was his fastball command and his ability to throw the ball to both sides of the plate," Ellis said. "His change up is obviously a major league out pitch. We just have to work on those breaking balls."

Ryu said he would continue to mix in more breaking balls and refine them as the spring goes on. It's all part of his routine, getting ready for the season, a process that served him well in seven seasons in the Korean Baseball Organization.

"You have a way you've done things for a long time in baseball, but he's done things too, and he's had success," Mattingly said. "There are a lot of ways to skin a cat. If he's having success, I don't want to fight him."

One of the things Ryu has done is not throw a bullpen session between starts. Though he said it's not something the Dodgers have asked him to change that practice.

"He's comfortable where he is at, and knows he's building up for a long season, versus guys who have to make an impression," Ellis said. "This is a guy who was the best baseball player in his entire country. He's got all the reasons in the world to be confident and believe in himself and what he's done. Until we see otherwise, we're going to let him do what he needs to do to get ready for the season."

Up next

The Dodgers host the Rangers at Camelback Ranch on Thursday afternoon. Chad Billingsley gets the start for Los Angeles, facing Randy Wells for Texas. Also scheduled to pitch for the Dodgers are Mark Lowe, Peter Moylan, and Josh Wall.

The Dodgers pitcher was cleared by team doctors on Wednesday, one day after leaving his appearance early after feeling pain in his left knee.

It turned out that the scare Shawn Tolleson got on Tuesday with his left knee was nothing more than just that, a scare. Tolleson, who came out of Tuesday's game after five pitches after feeling pain in his knee, was cleared by team doctors on Wednesday.

"It's a huge relief," Tolleson said.

"I just felt something move in my knee and felt a pain, so it kind of spooked me. I didn't want to test it or throw another pitch or anything. I came out of the game and they checked it out," Tolleson said. "Everything checked out good and clean. Today there is no swelling, no soreness, no nothing."

Tolleson participated in workouts on Wednesday, but only did light tossing, and no pitchers fielding practice.

"They're not getting any signs of anything major. He feels great today, no swelling. We'll get him out here and let him keep moving," said manager Don Mattingly.

Tolleson is expected to resume throwing in full on Thursday.

Greinke, who skipped a bullpen session Sunday with elbow soreness, would have been limited to 45 pitches had he started on Wednesday. Stephen Fife starts in Greinke's place.

Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke was scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday against Team Mexico at Camelback Ranch due to illness. It is believed to be the flu, and something that has affected more in the Dodgers clubhouse.

Stephen Fife, who was originally slated to travel to Goodyear to pitch in relief against the Indians, will instead stay in Glendale and start in Greinke's place against Mexico.

Manager Don Mattingly said Wednesday morning that had Greinke started, he would have been limited anyway as a precaution from skipping Sunday's bullpen session with elbow soreness.

"We'll keep him at 45 pitches today because of the little stuff with the elbow the other day," Mattingly said. "We don't want to extend him."

Hyun-jin Ryu starts for the Dodgers against the Indians, and both Mattingly and pitching coach Rick Honeycutt will make the trip to Goodyear. Honeycutt was originally scheduled to stay in Glendale to watch Greinke. Ryu is slated to throw roughly 60 pitches on Wednesday.

Paco Rodriguez is also out sick with the flu, and stayed home on Wednesday. Starting pitcher Ted Lilly had the flu on Sunday, one day after his wife and children had it. That pushed Lilly back in the rotation from a scheduled appearance Tuesday to starting Friday against the Giants in Scottsdale.

In other rotation news, Mattingly said he would split up Chad Billingsley and Chris Capuano, who had pitched in the same game for each of their first two appearances. Billingsley will start Thursday vs. Texas at Camelback Ranch, while Capuano starts Friday night against the Reds, also in Glendale and the second game of a day-night split squad doubleheader.
