Three rain delays were enough to convince umpires to finally cancel Friday's game between the Dodgers and Giants in Scottsdale.

It took three rain delays and several more tarp maneuverings, but Friday's game between the Dodgers and Giants was officially canceled, in the second inning. The Dodgers led 4-0 when the game was called, but in a spring full of exhibition games, these stats don't even count for that.

The game started at 1:35 p.m. MT, exactly 30 minutes late, then had another delay in the bottom of the first inning for 26 minutes.

The two delays were enough to convince manager Don Mattingly to remove starting pitcher Ted Lilly after he faced just three batters. Hunter Pence doubled off Lilly with two outs before the second delay, but when the game resumed neither player remained in the game.

With pinch runner Roger Kieschnick on second base, new pitcher Javy Guerra hit Buster Posey with his first pitch then walked Brandon Belt to load the bases for team chemistry with two outs. But Guerra struck out Francisco Peguero to end the inning.

The Dodgers picked up three runs in the first against Barry Zito on consecutive RBI hits by Juan Uribe, Yasiel Puig, and Alex Castellanos, the latter a ground rule double to left center field. The Dodgers scored their fourth run after Justin Sellers led off the second with a triple, and scored on a ground ball by Jerry Hairston Jr.

But the rains came again and the game was officially nixed by the umpires.

The Dodgers are scheduled to play the Reds on Friday night back at Camelback, but with heavy rains throughout the Phoenix area that is in doubt.

With regular players getting more and more playing time, the Dodgers will likely trim their roster in the next week, sending several to minor league camp.

The Dodgers have two games scheduled on Friday, the second time in three days they have a split squad. Days like these, with games against the Giants and Reds, the bulk of the 54 men remaining in major league camp are used, as are several from minor league camp. But that number will likely be trimmed within the next week.

Manager Don Mattingly said he will begin to see pitchers hit in games on Sunday, with no more designated hitter used by the Dodgers in games. That's one less spot for position players, and the need for players will also subside with the coming schedule.

Most of the regulars are on Mattingly's two-on, one-off pattern and with Wednesday's pending off day the lineups on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday will have less opportunities for reserves to play.

"You pretty much have a regular lineup for four straight games there," Mattingly said. "We're getting deep enough to where there will be less at-bats for guys."

The Dodgers do have split squad days on Mar. 15 and Mar. 17, but could bring up players from the minor league side for those days. There is also the date next week, believed to be Monday, in which many players on the 40-man roster will be optioned.

The bottom line is that by this time next week there will be a leaner roster on major league camp for the Dodgers.

Notes

Carl Crawford took 50 swings in the batting case on Friday, the second straight day he has done so. Friday's session included 25 swings off a tee, and 25 swings off a toss. Mattingly said Crawford will likely continue to hit like this though the weekend, not yet returning to throwing.

Scott Elbert threw again on Friday off flat ground, his second time doing so since his January elbow surgery. Elbert, who will throw every other day for the immediate future, said he felt no pain after Wednesday's session and it felt great to be able to throw again. "I feel like a real baseball player again," he said.

Mattingly said Kevin Gregg would be stretched out to pitch multiple innings. "It's not just pitching two innings, it's being able to finish an inning then come back and pitch another inning," Mattingly said.

Mattingly said that ideally, the team would keep six of its eight starting pitchers on the 25-man roster, including one in the bullpen. "That would be the best case scenario for us," he said.

Chris Capuano was originally scheduled to start for the Dodgers in the nightcap, but instead will follow Ted Lilly on the mound in Scottsdale. Matt Magill will now start Friday night against the Reds.

Scheduled to pitch after Lilly and Capuano for the Dodgers is Javy Guerra.

Scott Griggs, former UCLA closer and eight round draft pick in 2012 by the Dodgers, is among pitchers from the minor league side in uniform today in Scottsdale, wearing No. 93. Other Dodgers pitchers from the minor league side include Geison Aguasviva (No. 87), Angel Sanchez (No. 89), and Red Pattterson (No. 92).

Barry Zito starts for San Francisco, and will be followed on the mound by Javier Lopez, Dan Otero, Ramon Ramirez, and Sandy Rosario.

A slew of players from minor league camp are scheduled to play in reserve for the Dodgers on Friday in their two split squad games.

It is a rainy Friday in the greater Phoenix area, but the Dodgers do have two games on the schedule that may or may not get played. This is the first of two day-night split squad days for the Dodgers this spring, with a day trip to Scottsdale to face the Giants and a home game at night against the Reds at Camelback Ranch.

Here are the lineups for both games on Friday for the Dodgers:

vs. Giants (12:05 p.m. PT)

Hairston 1B
Ellis 2B
Kemp CF
Ethier RF
Uribe 3B
Puig DH
Castellanos LF
Ellis C
Sellers SS

Ted Lilly is scheduled to start against San Francisco, and will be followed by Matt Magill. Expect several minor league pitchers on the trip to Scottsdale as well.

Barry Zito starts for the Giants.

Scheduled reserves for the Dodgers include eight players from the minor league side: O'Koyea Dickson (1B), Rafael Ynoa (2B), Matt Angle (CF), Rusty Ryal (RF), Nick Evans (3B), Chris Jacobs (DH), Joc Pederson (LF), Matt Wallach (C), and Miguel Rojas (SS).

vs. Reds (6:05 p.m. PT)

Gordon SS
Schumaker LF
Herrera CF
Moore RF
Castro C
Van Slyke 1B
Barden 2B
Luna 3B
Amezaga DH

Chris Capuano is scheduled to start the night game, and will be followed on the mount by Shawn Tolleson, Paco Rodriguez, Matt Guerrier, and Steve Ames. It will be the first time back on the mound for Tolleson since his left knee scare on Tuesday in Peoria.

Bronson Arroyo stars for Cincinnati.

Scheduled reserves for the Dodgers in the night game also include eight players from the minor league side: Corey Seager (SS), Scott Schebler (LF), James Bladwin (CF), Jeremy Rathjen (RF), Tim Federowicz (C), Ryal (1B), Darnell Sweeney (2B), C.J. Retherford (3B), and Chris O'Brien (DH).

Again, keep in mind that there is a chance that neither game gets played on Friday. But if they do, here are the plans for the Dodgers.

Puig, hitting .423 in the early going, will head to Scottsdale to face the Giants on Friday afternoon in the first of two games for the Dodgers.

Yasiel Puig had two more hits as the number three hitter on Thursday in the Dodgers' 11-11 tie with the Rangers at Camelback Ranch, and will continue to get chances to play, as he was on the team's travel roster to Scottsdale on Friday, as posted in the clubhouse on Thursday.

The Dodgers play two games Friday, one at 12:05 p.m. PT in Scottsdale against the Giants, and one at 6:05 p.m. PT back home against the Reds in Glendale. But rain threatens the greater Phoenix area on Friday, and there is a possibility one or both games get washed away.

But the plan for now is for Puig to be among those on the bus to Scottsdale against the Giants. In his team-leading 12th game on Thursday, Puig struck out in the first inning, but he singled in the hole between first and second base in the third inning to drive home Dee Gordon. In the fifth inning, Puig singled and later scored on a double by Elian Herrera.

In his 12 games, Puig is hitting .423 (11-for-26), or as Brian Barden calls it, an 0-for-7 slump. Puig remains the only Dodger to play in a Cactus League game each day they have had one scheduled.

Here are the Dodgers scheduled to join Puig on the bus to Scottsdale on Friday:

Pitchers (3): Ted Lilly, Matt Magill, Javy Guerra

Manager Don Mattingly said on Thursday that if it looked like rain would wash out one of the two games, he would try to bunch up Lilly and Chris Capuano, who is otherwise scheduled to start the night game against Cincinnati.

Catchers (4): A.J. Ellis, Wilkin Castillo, Jesus Flores, Matt Wallach

Infielders (4): Mark Ellis, Jerry Hairston Jr., Justin Sellers, Juan Uribe

Outfielders (4): Alex Castellanos, Andre Ethier, Elian Herrera, Puig

Given the relatively light travel roster listed here of 19 (there were 31 Dodgers in uniform on Wednesday in Goodyear against the Indians), expect this crew to be joined by a healthy dollop of minor leaguers.
