A look at a decision made in the ninth inning Friday night by manager Don Mattingly, and possibly one or two starters slated to pitch in relief on Saturday.

Manager Don Mattingly turned to left-handed relief pitcher Paco Rodriguez on Friday night to get the final out of the Dodgers' 9-8 victory over the Angels, pulling closer Brandon League with two outs in the ninth inning and runners on second and third base. The move wasn't one Mattingly would have done in the regular season, but at the same time it showed the confidence he has in Rodriguez, the left-hander drafted in the second round in 2012.

"The one thing we found out about Paco is he throws strikes with a lot of different pitches, and he doesn't seem to be afraid of anything. Last year we brought him up in San Francisco and he threw six straight strikes," Mattingly said. "Paco has been really impressive. We can use him in different ways. We feel like he's got weapons for the righties and the lefties, and he's had a good camp. There's nothing really negative about Paco."

But despite the strong performance by Rodriguez — a 3.09 ERA, 13 strikeouts and three walks in 11⅔ innings — he may find himself on the outside looking in once the opening day roster is finalized on Sunday. Rodriguez, like Josh Wall, has options, and non-roster reliever Kevin Gregg and starters Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang might find themselves in the bullpen as well.

Rodriguez was called in after League already gave up one run, and allowed the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. Mattingly said pitch count played a factor in removing League, as he threw 20 pitches in his second straight night on the mound.

"That was just a work situation there. With him going back to back, we were only going to allow him to go only so many pitches. It's one of those things. I did want him to finish it, but that could get into an 8-10 pitch at-bat and I didn't want to get there," Mattingly said. "In the regular season, that's his game."

Capuano will pitch in relief on Saturday in the Dodgers' spring finale, a hint that he will open the regular season in the bullpen.

"We're going to see Cap tomorrow in some capacity. We're not sure how, whether it's two batters or an inning," Mattingly said. "He's only going to have one day off between tomorrow and opening day, so it will be something short."

Mattingly talked to Capuano, Harang, and Ted Lilly in the past week about possibly moving to the bullpen. It appears some have been more receptive to the idea than others.

"I'm pretty sure that Cap wants to (pitch in relief), but I'm not sure we've gotten there with Aaron yet," Mattingly said.

The Dodgers have won the first two games of the Freeway Series against the Angels.

The Dodgers showcased all the bells and whistles of their brand new video boards and sound system on Friday night, and there was much to display, as the Dodgers won a slugfest 9-8 over the Angels before 34,157 at Dodger Stadium.

The win, coupled with Thursday night's 3-0 victory in Anaheim, made this the first time the Dodgers beat the Angels more than once in the exhibition season since 2003. The Dodgers were 3-15-3 against the Angels in preseason contests in the last nine years.

The offense was paced by A.J. Ellis, who hit a pitch over the center field wall off of Jason Vargas for a grand slam in the first inning to give the Dodgers a 5-1 advantage. Ellis had two hits in three at-bats Friday, and is hitting .356/.463/.489 this spring.

Luis Cruz singled and hit a two-run double, Carl Crawford had two singles, and Matt Kemp doubled and walked on the night for the Dodgers, who scored eight runs off Angels starter Jason Vargas in less than two innings.

Unfortunately for the Dodgers, Josh Beckett wasn't much better, as he was roughed up for the second consecutive outing. Just like on Sunday in Phoenix against the A's, Beckett on Friday night allowed seven runs, including two home runs, in just four innings. If there was any positive to Beckett's outing, it was his five strikeouts and no walks, giving him 17 strikeouts and six walks in 17⅓ innings during the spring.

The Dodgers bullpen picked up for Beckett with five strong innings, with six relievers combining to allow three hits and two walks, with seven strikeouts. J.P. Howell struck out three in 1⅓ innings, and on the spring has 14 strikeouts and four walks in his nine innings. Brandon League ran into some trouble in the ninth inning, allowing one run and putting the go-ahead run in scoring position, but Paco Rodriguez recorded the final out to preserve the victory.

Yasiel Puig made his Dodger Stadium debut in the eighth inning, taking over in right field for Andre Ethier. Puig flew out to shallow right field in his only at-bat. Puig is now hitting .517/.500/.828 on the spring, and shares the same batting average as teammate Brian Barden (15 for 29), who has half of Puig's at-bats.

Up next

The Dodgers conclude their exhibition schedule on Saturday night, with a 6:05 p.m. PT start in Anaheim against the Angels. Zack Greinke will get the start for the Dodgers with a likely limit of 90 pitches or so, while Tommy Hanson starts for the Halos.

Manager Don Mattingly reiterated on Friday he is considering resurrecting the optioned Sellers on Easter Sunday, going with the defensively strong lineup with Sellers at shortstop and Luis Cruz at third base. If Sellers isn't the every day starter at short, perhaps he could be in a platoon role.

"I want to keep seeing Justin at short," Mattingly said. "We have a lefty today, we'll see what happens."

Mattingly said he wasn't aware of any trade talks that might alleviate this left side of the infield concern, and that the second chance for Sellers came when discussing possible roster options with his coaches and the front office last week at Camelback Ranch.

"We had some good meetings and talks. When Hanley Ramirez goes out, we threw Cruzer over as the first thing we do. But when everybody gets together, we get a chance to think about it a little bit more and put some time on it," Mattingly said. "We still haven't settled anything, but it's just another point of thinking."

In his brief time in the majors Sellers has hit .245/.344/.340 against left-handed pitchers (in all of 61 plate appearances) compared to ..184/.254/.316 against righties. In the minors in 2011-2012 Sellers hit .375/.451/.725 in 92 PA against southpaws.

*Opening day lineup, with two caveats: Andre Ethier would likely bat fifth instead of sixth against Matt Cain; and obviously Clayton Kershaw is starting Monday.

Capuano, Harang, and Lilly are the three odd men out in the Dodgers starting rotation, and we will find out Sunday just how many of them remain with the team in a different role.

With opening day rosters due Sunday afternoon, and the Dodgers still in possession of eight starting pitchers under contract, this weekend figures to be newsworthy, either with a trade or two or established veteran starters accepting their fate and moving to the bullpen.

All three of Chris Capuano, Aaron Harang, and Ted Lilly are in the final year of their contracts, and would much rather prefer to start than relieve during their walk year heading into free agency. Manager Don Mattingly said on Friday that has talked to the parties in question about a role switch.

"I can't say they've said, 'Hey thanks for talking to me about that,' but we've tried to be up front with guys from the beginning. They all knew that with eight guys for five spots, that there was a possibility of (moving to the bullpen)," Mattingly said. "I don't expect them to necessarily like it, but on the back side of that if we treat them with respect and like pros, at some point we expect them to do the best that they can with a bad situation."

Mattingly said he was no closer to a resolution regarding Lilly. The club would ideally like Lilly to go on the disabled list to begin the season, while Lilly hasn't been too keen on the idea.

"I know we've been concerned for a little while now with him. We talked with medical to see if there is anything going on," Mattingly said. "Teddy has just never caught up. He's been sick, hasn't had a chance to build up arm strength like everybody else."

The Dodgers can't simply unilaterally decide to place Lilly on the DL.

"We're trying to do what's right for everybody," Mattingly said.

Billingsley is driving back to Los Angeles Friday night, and will rejoin his teammates in Anaheim on Saturday.

Chad Billingsley threw 96 pitches in six innings against Brewers Triple-A hitters in a minor league game in Arizona on Friday night. Billingsley did not allow a run in his first six innings, with six strikeouts and four hits and one walk allowed. He pitched to one batter in the seventh inning and hit him, and he came around to score for the only run charged against Billingsley.

He was able to throw the curve ball with no problems to his right index fingernail, and will rejoin the Dodgers in Anaheim on Saturday.

Manager Don Mattingly said Billingsley remains in his starting rotation, but it will just be a matter of when. The Dodgers don't technically need a fifth starter until Apr. 13, their 11th game of the season. But Billingsley could be mixed into the rotation earlier, perhaps as early as Apr. 7.

"There are a couple of issues with Bills. Making sure he's ready is one. The nail is one. But the biggest issue is any kind of small changes messing with that elbow," Mattingly said. "That's our biggest concern with him, making sure we're not putting him in a bad spot."

It seems a foregone conclusion that Billingsley will be placed on the disabled list retroactive to Mar. 22, which would mean his earliest activation date is Apr. 6. That would give the Dodgers an extra roster spot for between four and 10 games, though Mattingly wouldn't commit to that plan of action on Friday.

The massive Dodger Stadium offseason upgrades, which cost well north of $100 million, get their first dry run on Friday night against the Angels. Now it's just a matter of making sure everything is finished.

The Dodgers will host the Angels on Friday night at Dodger Stadium, but it will be less about the Freeway Series and more about the stadium getting a dry run through on all the new bells and whistles before opening day.

First and foremost among the upgrades are the new scoreboards above the left and right field pavilions, as well as the new scoreboards in the wall, and the new sound system. Many of the upgrades are still being finalized just hours before game time, but the finished product should be quite impressive.

The first image I saw in person of the new scoreboards was a soap opera, which was a bit disappointing though the high definition was pretty amazing.

I generally sit near organist Nancy Bea Hefley, who sits near all the sound and video crews, now in expanded and upgraded areas

There were finishing touches being added to the bullpen just this afternoon.

The Dodgers also unveiled their upgrades to the stadium today.

"The upgrades were designed with particular emphasis on the Top Deck and Reserve levels and outfield pavilions that had been essentially untouched since the stadium first opened," CEO Stan Kasten said in a statement. "Our goal is to provide the most pleasurable experience from the time fans arrive at the stadium until the time they depart, ideally after a Dodger victory."

Here is a list of the upgrades to each section:

A look at the weekend schedule between the Dodgers and Angels, with two games in Anaheim and one at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers on Thursday continue their annual exercise of beating their heads against the wall, as they open the Freeway Series against the Angels in Anaheim. The clubs play three games this weekend, with Thursday and Saturday's contests in Anaheim and Friday at Dodger Stadium.

Not only have the Dodgers struggled in the regular season against the Angels, but have done so in preseason exhibitions as well. The last year the Dodgers won a regular season series from the Angels was 2006, and they have lost 26 of their last 38 games to the Angels overall. In the preseason it has been more of the same, as the Dodgers are 3-15-3 against the Angels in the spring Freeway Series dating back to 2004.

The last year the Dodgers won a preseason Freeway Series was in 2003 when they captured both games against their red nemesis from the south.

Here is a look at the pitching matchups this weekend:

Thursday, 7:05 p.m. (Anaheim): Hyun-jin Ryu vs. Joe Blanton

Friday, 7:10 p.m. (Dodger Stadium): Josh Beckett vs. Jason Vargas

Saturday, 6:05 p.m. (Anaheim): Zack Greinke vs. Tommy Hanson
