The Dodgers have used their bullpen to throw 10 innings in the last two days, including using five relief pitchers in each game.

The toll of Chris Capuano's early exit on the bullpen on Tuesday could result in a possible roster move prior to Wednesday's series finale. With five relievers pitching a combined seven innings on Tuesday after five relievers were used Monday, there is the possibility of the Dodgers recalling another reliever just to have another fresh arm to use in the bullpen.

Manager Don Mattingly met with general manager Ned Colletti after the game, and said they would discuss potentially adding a reliever prior to Wednesday night's game. But with staff ace Clayton Kershaw, who has pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts and 10 of his last 12, starting Wednesday and an off day coming Thursday, the Dodgers might be able to get by without a roster move for another day.

Mattingly said a few relievers would be unavailable Wednesday, which almost certainly means no Matt Guerrier (34 pitches Tuesday, 47 pitches in last two days) or Josh Wall (29 pitches Tuesday, 46 pitches in last two days).

"Kind of the way we used guys, it leaves us a pretty good bullpen tomorrow," Mattingly said.

Both Brandon League and Kenley Jansen pitched Tuesday, but it was the first outing for each of them in the last three days. Similarly, both J.P. Howell and the recently shaky Ronald Belisario have pitched once in the last three days.

If the Dodgers do decide to add someone, the new reliever would likely be someone from Triple-A Albuquerque like Steve Ames, who pitched an inning Tuesday night, or Chris Withrow, who pitched an inning Monday night. If the Dodgers decided to add a long reliever, Javy Guerra would be an option, as he last pitched on Saturday.

Manager Don Mattingly said he doesn't plan on using the fifth starter spot again until Apr. 24.

The Dodgers' vaunted pitching depth could be put to the test in the coming days, with most of the short-term ramifications stemming from Chris Capuano straining his left calf in Tuesday's 9-2 loss to the Padres at Dodger Stadium.

Capuano will have an MRI on his left calf on Thursday to determine the severity of the strain, though Capuano doesn't think it is anything serious. He said it was similar to a calf injury he suffered with the Brewers "five or six years ago" that caused him to miss a week.

"It's a strain. It's not a full tear or anything like that. We'll take a look on Thursday to see what grade it is," Capuano said. "Hopefully the MRI will show it's not a very severe strain."

Capuano suffered the strain while covering first base to end the second inning. He tried to continue pitching into the third, but after a quick walk to Jesus Guzman he was removed from the game.

"I came in after the inning and I taped it up real tight, and tried to brace that ankle so it took pressure off the calf. I felt like I could sit back on it and push off. But the walk to Guzman there it was pretty obvious I wasn't driving off that leg the way I needed to," Capuano said. "I wanted to stay out there to try to give us some innings because I knew we needed innings. But I feel like they made the right decision. I was hurting."

Manager Don Mattingly said he didn't want to take any chances with Capuano.

"Rick (Honeycutt, pitching coach) was basically saying he's not making one good throw out of those first four, and he still wanted to try to pitch. It's still early, 14 games in," Mattingly said. "I can't allow a guy who has had a couple of Tommy John surgeries to go out there and try to pitch on a leg where he can't use everything, can't use his whole body. You can't do that to a guy."

The injury cut short Capuano's first start of the year, one that began with an arduous four-run first inning.

"It was not the way I saw it in my head. The first inning was tough. I wasn't hitting my spots very well, but it seemed like every little ball they hit had eyes and found holes. Nothing really went our way in the first inning, and that was frustrating," Capuano said. "To have a stupid little injury like this happen, it just pushes you over the edge. It's frustrating."

With a pair of off days coming up, the Dodgers do have the luxury of time in waiting for MRI results on Capuano.

"The one positive is that we don't need that fifth starter again until the 24th, with the off days coming up," Mattingly said.

If the Dodgers wanted, they could wait even longer to use the fifth starter, until Apr. 27, but Mattingly likes whenever possible to use off days to give an extra day of rest to his starters.

Even if healthy, there is no guarantee Capuano will be the fifth starter whenever it's needed. His competition is Ted Lilly, who allowed four runs (three earned runs) in five innings for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga in his third minor league rehabilitation start. Lilly threw 81 pitches, struck out five, and walked one.

Off day for Kemp?

Matt Kemp went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on Tuesday, and Mattingly said he would consider giving his center fielder a day off Wednesday after his .185/.224/.259 with no home runs in 14 games. Kemp was removed in a double switch to start the seventh inning of Tuesday's blowout.

"Matt's pressing pretty good," Mattingly said. "Tonight he seemed pretty frustrated."

Up next

The Dodgers try to stave off a San Diego sweep on Wednesday night, and they send their stopper to the hill in Clayton Kershaw, who is one strikeout shy of 1,000 in his career. Right-hander Tyson Ross gets the call for the Padres in what is already a sell-out for the Dodgers, on Hello Kitty fleece blanket night.

After Capuano's early exit, the Dodgers needed five relief pitchers to pitch the final seven innings of their blowout loss to the Padres at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers were doomed from the start on Tuesday, as Chris Capuano's first start of the season morphed from merely bad to horrific as he left with a left calf strain in the Padres' 9-2 trouncing of Los Angeles. The third consecutive loss dropped the Dodgers to .500 (7-7) on the season.

The deadline may have been Apr. 15, but the Dodgers' bullpen got taxed to the hilt on Tuesday. Capuano appeared to suffer his injury on the final play of the second inning, covering first base on a ground out. It marked the second consecutive inning Capuano had an awkward play at first base to end the inning. After allowing five hits and a walk to score four runs in the opening frame, Capuano fell down as he covered first on the inning ending grounder. But though he ended the inning on his back, there was nothing hurt except for maybe his pride.

Capuano stayed in the game to open the third inning, but appeared to be off mechanically as he walked Jesus Guzman to lead off the inning. Capuano exited after issuing the walk, leaving the final 21 outs for the beleaguered bullpen to record. The Dodgers had no long man to turn to on Tuesday, because he had already started the game.

Matt Guerrier allowed an inherited run to score but otherwise didn't allow much in his two scoreless innings. Josh Wall, who threw 17 pitches Monday night, threw 29 more in his two innings. Though he gave up three runs, Wall was likely the sacrificial bridge needed to prevent overuse of the rest of the staff.

Paco Rodriguez, Kenley Jansen, and Brandon League pitched the final three innings really out of necessity even with such a large deficit.

The Dodgers were held in check by Jason Marquis, who put up a performance reminiscent of his 2009 shutout at Dodger Stadium while with the Rockies. Marquis allowed just one run on three hits, and had retired 12 straight before giving up a two-out double to Carl Crawford in the eighth inning.

Tuesday marked the opposite of the Dodgers' offensive struggles of late. Instead of getting runners on base and stranding them, the Dodgers tried a new approach of simply not putting people on base. They amassed three hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch in the first eight innings.

With the game all but decided quite early, there wasn't much drama. But there were a pair of quirky things. For one, catcher Ramon Hernandez played first base in the ninth inning. It is the eighth straight season Hernandez has played at least one game at first base, a position he has played a total of 46 games, including 30 starts, in his career.

Capuano left the game in the third inning with a left calf strain.

Chris Capuano left the Dodgers' game against the Padres after pitching just two innings on Tuesday night, after straining his left calf while covering first base on the last out of the second inning.

Yonder Alonso grounded out to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to end the second inning, and fed the covering Capuano. After the play, Capuano began hopping around, then limped off the field and went into the clubhouse between innings.

Capuano, making his first start of the season, tried to come out for the third inning but after walking leadoff batter Jesus Guzman team trainers and the coaching staff came to the mound. Capuano was removed after throwing a few warmup pitches. Guzman came around to score, the fifth run allowed by Capuano, including a four-run first inning.

Whoever made up the phrase "you can never have too much pitching" was either wise beyond his or her years, or has a sick sense of humor, or both. Capuano was starting for Zack Greinke, whose collarbone was broken last Thursday in San Diego. The Dodgers entered spring training with eight starting pitchers and if Capuano has to miss any time are now down to five, and that's counting Ted Lilly, who is currently on the disabled list.

Lilly, it should be noted, allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in five innings on a rehab assignment in Lake Elsinore on Tuesday night for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga.

The good news for the Dodgers is that they have some time to sort out their fifth starter. With pending off days Thursday and Monday, the Dodgers don't need the spot in the rotation again until Apr. 27.

Monday and Tuesday marked the first time taking batting practice for Ramirez since his thumb surgery on Mar. 22.

Before Tuesday night's game against the Padres, Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez took batting practice, hitting off a tee and light tossing for the second straight day, his first action hitting since having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb on Mar. 22. Ramirez vowed to return well before the diagnosed eight weeks, which would be May 17.

Ramirez told reporters Tuesday he would be back 'way sooner' than May 17, and that "everybody is going to be shocked" at how quickly he returns.

Manager Don Mattingly was similarly excited but less specific than Ramirez.

"He was in there swinging, and he looks good. Hanley's moving forward, that's for sure," Mattingly said. "I'm going out on a limb and saying it's not going to be eight weeks."

Ramirez would be a welcome addition to a lineup struggling to score and putting up less than three runs per contest. While praising the defensive exploits of Justin Sellers and Luis Cruz at shortstop, Mattingly knows they are lacking offensively.

"I've got two shortstops, Sellers and Cruz," he said. "So take your pick, really."

Mattingly said that he didn't see Nick Punto as more than an occasional fill in at the position, and that the club had no plans to call up Dee Gordon to play shortstop with Ramirez out. Dodgers shortstops have combined to hit .167/.250/.238 (7-for-42) with one home run, two runs batted in, and one run scored this season.

Notes

Chris Capuano has a pitch count likely in the 90-100 pitch range, in his first start of the season and first time stretched out since Mar. 25. "Like anyone else in their first time out, if he's between 90-100 (pitches), we'll be thinking about it," Mattingly said.

Ted Lilly is pitching tonight for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga in Lake Elsinore, facing a Padres minor league team that has a rehabbing Chase Headley on it. Mattingly wouldn't commit to Capuano in the starting rotation beyond Tuesday. "You're asking me to predict the future, and I'm not very good at that. Right now, Cap is starting tonight and Teddy is throwing tonight, and we'll see where it goes from here," he said.

Carl Crawford, who had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow on Aug. 23, has been cleared by Dodgers trainers to throw without restriction now. "I'm glad to hear that because I think he's been throwing the ball pretty good, but I don't feel like he feels like he could let it go. But when the trainers tell you it's time, it makes you feel good," Mattingly said.

Cameron Maybin was a late lineup scratch for the Padres. Chris Denorfia, who was originally slated to start in right field, moves to center field, and Kyle Blanks starts in right field.

My favorite pregame exchange was between Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times and Mattingly:

Dilbeck: "When you get to Baltimore and you need a DH, are you going to hit Kershaw or Ryu?"

Mattingly: "You know what my dad said about that? There are 1,000 comedians out of work and you're trying to be funny."

Uribe, who is tied for the team lead in home runs with two, makes his fifth start of the season at third base on Tuesday night.

The Dodgers made a small switch in their starting lineup on Tuesday night in the middle game of the series against the Padres. Luis Cruz, who had a hit on Monday but is hitting just .111 (4-for-36) on the season, sits Tuesday in favor of Juan Uribe at third base.

"Luis's a concern. With Luis the flyballs tell me a story, and not necessarily a good one because there are too many of them," manager Don Mattingly said Monday night. "He did get a nice bunt down and a got a hit, so he still made contributions, but Luis hasn't swung the bat."

Uribe has hit .286/.318/.524 (6-for-21) with a home run and two doubles lifetime against Jason Marquis, starting for San Diego on Tuesday. Though none of those hits have come after 2009.

Uribe is tied with Adrian Gonzalez for the team lead in home runs with two, but those are Uribe's only two hits in 12 at-bats. However, four walks have boosted Uribe's on-base percentage, giving him the bizarre hitting line of .167/.375/.667. Both home runs, and three of Uribe's four walks, came against the Padres.

Here are Tuesday's starting lineups:

Dodgers relief pitchers have walked 19 hitters in 29⅔ innings this season. Dodgers starting pitchers have walked 16 hitters in 84⅔ innings.

It has been a rough week or so for the Dodgers bullpen, culminating in Monday night's loss to the Padres. The Dodgers had five relief pitchers combine for six walks, one strikeout, 38 balls, and 36 strikes in three innings, turning a 3-3 game into a 6-3 loss to San Diego.

"We get to 3-3 there and we get to our bullpen which we feel is our strength, then we walk the leadoff hitter," said manager Don Mattingly on Monday.

The Dodgers used 13 relief pitchers in three games in San Diego, then the group has collectively struggled in the four games since.

Those numbers don't include the four inherited runs allowed to score on Friday and Saturday in Arizona. Ronald Belisario, who didn't retire any of the three batters he faced on Monday and got stuck with the loss, was singled out by Mattingly.

"Beli for me has just been a little bit inconsistent. One outing he's really good, then the next outing he doesn't seem to be as good," Mattingly said. "His stuff seems to be good, but location seems to be off."

Chris Capuano, who retired eight of the 11 batters he faced in a pair of scoreless relief outings, gets the start for the Dodgers on Tuesday in place of Zack Greinke. In his career against the Padres, Capuano is 5-4 with a 3.34 ERA, including 1-2 with a 3.13 ERA in four starts in 2012.

Yonder Alonso is hitting .455 (5-for-11) with a double against Capuano, while normal lefty masher Chris Denorfia is hitting just .214 (3-for-14) against him. None of the current active Padres have hit a home run against Capuano, but Chase Headley, who will likely be activated from the disabled list this week, has hit .400 (4-for-10) with a home run, a double, and four walks against Capuano.
