Gonzalez sat out Sunday, still dealing with a muscular strain in his neck that caused him to leave Saturday night's game after seven innings. Gonzalez, who injured his neck on May 1, has missed three games with the injury, left two others early, and pinch hit in another game that he did not start.

But since the injury Gonzalez is hitting .421 (8-for-19) with a double, a home run, and six runs batted in, and he has a nine-game hitting streak.

"That's the one thing. It doesn't really bother me when I hit," Gonzalez said on Saturday. "Just throwing, running for fly balls, running with my head up, that hurts, especially going back. But even moving forward with my head up it hurts. With fly balls it's hard for me to go hard or even go comfortably."

Scott Van Slyke filled in nicely at first base for Gonzalez on Sunday with a home run and an RBI single.

The Dodgers have beaten the Nationals five straight times at Dodger Stadium.

Scott Van Slyke gets his first start of the season, at first base, in place of Gonzalez, owner of a nine-game hitting streak. This is the fifth game Gonzalez has not started this season, and the fourth since injuring his neck on May 1. He appeared as a pinch hitter last Sunday in San Francisco, and has said batting doesn't hurt his neck. So don't be surprised if Gonzalez pinch hits on Sunday.

Tim Federowicz also starts, giving A.J. Ellis his seventh day off of the season behind the plate. Manager Don Mattingly has said since spring training that he planned to give Ellis more time off this season, and entering Sunday Ellis is tied for sixth in the majors with 29 starts at catcher.

In 2012, Ellis also started 29 of the first 36 games, in 41 days. This season has seen the same amount of starts, in 42 days.

The Dodgers last won consecutive games on Apr. 25-26, against the Mets and Brewers.

Gonzalez had two hits in Saturday's win but left the game after seven innings, perhaps as a precaution.

If there was an opportunity for the Dodgers to unilaterally impose the designated hitter rule upon the National League, they just might do it. After all, their first baseman Adrian Gonzalez is still bothered by a muscular strain in his neck, but it doesn't really hinder his performance at the plate.

Gonzalez went 2-for-4 on Saturday night in the Dodgers' 7-1 win over the Marlins, extending his hitting streak to nine games. But he also left the game after seven innings after feeling neck pain after a couple of fielding plays.

"We don't know what gets him. The play where he goes to his right and gets the lead guy, that stung him. Then a swing stung him," said manager Don Mattingly. "We thought it was a good time to get him out of there. The beat kind of goes on with Adrian. He's still swinging the bat good."

The score was 7-1 at the time and lifting Gonzalez was partly a precaution, and Gonzalez insists he will play again on Sunday. But the neck strain continues to be a nuisance, especially in the field.

Gonzalez injured the neck on May 1 against Colorado, then was scratched from the starting lineup three straight days in San Francisco, though he did deliver a pinch-hit single in the finale of the series. He left the game on Wednesday against Arizona after just four innings after aggravating the neck strain.

But his hitting streak includes every game Gonzalez has played since the injury.

"That's the one thing. It doesn't really bother me when I hit," Gonzalez said. "Just throwing, running for fly balls, running with my head up, that hurts, especially going back. But even moving forward with my head up it hurts. With fly balls it's hard for me to go hard or even go comfortably. I'd say the fly balls are the worst."

It has become a daily battle for Gonzalez of getting treatment and preparing for a game, only to have that relative calm disrupted during play.

"It's a strain. Once I get up and start running and throwing during the game, it just seems to get worse and worse and worse."

With Gonzalez still dealing with a neck strain, Van Slyke gives the Dodgers someone they can use both in the outfield and first base as needed.

The decision to bring Scott Van Slyke back to the major leagues by the Dodgers has been a few days in the making, but it might not have happened had Adrian Gonzalez not aggravated his neck injury on Wednesday. Gonzalez is back in the starting lineup Friday for the Dodgers against the Marlins, but they are playing it safe with their first baseman.

"Adrian we thought was over his neck thing, but now we're back at square one," said manager Don Mattingly on Friday.

Gonzalez missed two games last weekend in San Francisco with his muscle strain, and was held out of Sunday's starting lineup as well, though he did pinch hit. He aggravated the injury making a diving play for a foul ball in the fourth inning on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Mattingly said Gonzalez didn't do much Friday before the game. He didn't take live batting practice or field ground balls, but did hit in the cage, an effort to "save his bullets" for the game.

Van Slyke played exclusively first base for Triple-A Albuquerque this season, but on Tuesday when the Dodgers needed a reserve from the Isotopes the call went to utility man Elian Herrera instead.

"(Van Slyke) was part of the conversation. The fact that he hadn't played the outfield was a little bit of a struggle for us, because that's kind of where we thought about him playing," Mattingly said. "We knew he needed a few days."

Van Slyke started in right field for Albuquerque on Tuesday and Thursday, and played left field on Wednesday. On Friday, he is back in the major leagues, and back on the 40-man roster. Looking to improve on that 9-for-54 (.167) performance from last season.

"I think his approach has always been good. Just because a guy comes one time and doesn't hit, doesn't mean he can't hit. He's proven he can hit. He won a batting title in Double-A, he's hitting .400 this year," Mattingly said. "I always thought the guy could swing the bat. He's the right mixture of guy that we need.

"He's a guy who has swung the bat really well. It give us someone with a chance to put the ball in the seats. It gives us a guy who has played first and both corners in the outfield. We're looking for more than what we've got so far."

Notes

Zack Greinke is expected to throw 75 pitches in his rehab start Friday night with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. Relief pitcher Scott Elbert is expected to pitch one inning or as many as 25 pitches, whichever comes first.

Mark Ellis is recovering slowly from his strained right quad, but still hasn't been able to run full speed yet. He will need to do that to be cleared for a minor league rehab assignment prior to his activation from the disabled list. "He's been able to swing the bat, take ground balls, but just the full speed explosion stuff we haven't got to yet," Mattingly said.

Ted Lilly will throw a bullpen session on Saturday, his first since getting placed on the disabled list on May 3 with a strained right rib cage.

Stephen Fife, on the disabled list with right shoulder bursitis, threw off flat ground on Friday, his second time throwing since hitting the DL on Apr. 27.

Tim Federowicz for the first time took ground balls at first base on Friday, a position he played in college at North Carolina. Mattingly stressed that though he isn't trying to get Federowicz playing time at first base, adding a position could never hurt.

"We didn't realize that he played there in college. He looks really good over there. It's really nice, if there was a situation with two catchers with one can actually do that," Mattingly said. "Then you're not afraid to put him in a game, or if you pinch hit him you can leave him in the game. You don't worry about your catcher getting hurt and not having anybody that can go out and play. It's nice that Fed can play another position."

"It didn't look too good when he came out. It sounds like he aggravated that neck pretty good. It' what we were afraid of in San Francisco, of him aggravating that with a dive," Mattingly said. "I'm not sure it's going to be good, but I'm hoping it's not going to be anything long term."

The good news for Gonzalez is that while he was in the game he did go 1-for-2 with an RBI double which at the time gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. It extended his hitting streak to seven games, during which time Gonzalez is hitting .364 (8-for-22).

Gonzalez has been battling a muscle strain in his neck for a week.

Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez left Wednesday night's game against the Diamondbacks in the fifth inning, one inning after making a diving attempt to catch a foul ball. Gonzalez has been battling a strained muscle in his neck, and the Dodgers say he aggravated the neck strain on Wednesday.

Gonzalez is listed as day-to-day.

Arizona catcher Wil Nieves hit a foul pop on the first base side in the fourth inning, and Gonzalez, catcher A.J. Ellis, and pitcher Clayton Kershaw converged on the play. Gonzalez appeared to call off Ellis, then made a sprawling attempt to catch the ball, but it bounced out of his glove.

Gonzalez didn't appear to be favoring his neck in any way after the play, and he doubled in a run at the plate in the bottom of the inning. He did slow down rather awkwardly heading into second base, but it was unclear what, if anything was hurt. Gonzalez talked to trainers in the dugout before he was replaced in the field in the top of the fifth inning.

Juan Uribe, who started the game at third base, moved to first base, and Luis Cruz entered the game at third.

Gonzalez was written into the starting lineup all three games in San Francisco, but was scratched all three games with neck pain. He appeared only on the finale against the Giants on Sunday, hitting a two-run pinch single in the eighth inning.

The Dodgers first baseman might be available to pinch hit on Sunday night.

Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was scratched from the starting lineup against the Giants for a third consecutive day on Sunday with neck pain. It has been quite a weekend for Gonzalez.

On Wednesday, Gonzalez said he may have injured his neck in a light collision with the first base umpire against the Rockies at Dodger Stadium.

On Friday, Gonzalez was written into the starting lineup but was ultimately scratched. It was his first game missed as a Dodger after playing in 67 straight contests, dating back to 2012.

On Saturday, Gonzalez was in the lineup again but was also walking around the clubhouse in a soft neck brace, and after pregame workouts it was decided to give him another game off.

Third time was supposed to be a charm on Sunday, as Gonzalez was written into the starting lineup yet again. Gonzalez said specifically it was his trapezius muscle, in his neck and upper back, that is hurting, per Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.

I hope bench coach Trey Hillman has been using pencil or a soft erasable ink when making out these lineup cards. On Sunday, Juan Uribe moves from third base to first base, with Luis Cruz now starting at third.

At least there is this reasonably good news, from Buster Olney at ESPN.

Gonzalez says hitting is not a problem, but all of the other things involved in playing--fielding, etc. -- aren't comfortable. Could PH.

Things figured to be bad for Gonzalez, who after Friday's game told reporters, "I can't turn my neck right now," per Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.

Even on Saturday, though he was originally penciled into the lineup, Gonzalez spent the bulk of pregame getting treatment on his neck, and per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com was walking around the clubhouse wearing a soft neck brace. I'm no doctor, but that is almost never a good sign for anyone, let alone a professional athlete.

Gonzalez was apparently injured on Wednesday night against the Rockies at Dodger Stadium in the eighth inning when bumping into the umpire on a ground ball to first base. Mike Petriello of Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness captured the moment in GIF form.
