The Dodgers center fielder, who homered on Monday night, pledged $1,000 in Oklahoma tornado relief for every home run hit between now and the All-Star break.

Matt Kemp ended a long power drought on Monday night with a home run against the Brewers, in the Dodgers' 3-1 victory at Miller Park. The center fielder after the game on Twitter pledged to donate money for that home run and each home run until the All-Star break to tornado relief in Oklahoma.

It has not been a good year on the field for Kemp, as Monday was just his second home run of the season, snapping a streak of 97 plate appearances without one. But some things happen to be more important than baseball, and it's nice to see such a good deed.

Kershaw pitched his second complete game of the season and 10th of his career on Monday night against the Brewers in Milwaukee.

The Dodgers got their big guns to produce on Monday night in Milwaukee, and it paid off with a 3-1 victory over the Brewers. But while we focused earlier on the long overdue exploits of Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp, perhaps not enough attention was paid to Clayton Kershaw, who continued his run as the best of the best.

We are watching something special in Kershaw, the best pitcher in baseball at the peak of his powers. Sometimes its fun just to peak at some of his stats, and how mind-blowing some of them are.

Kershaw led the majors in ERA in 2011 and 2012. His ERA in 2013 is 1.35, and again leads the major leagues.

Kershaw has allowed 11 earned runs in 10 starts in 2013.

Kershaw has allowed four total runs, three earned, in his last five starts.

Kershaw's ERA over his last 58 starts is 1.97.

I of course cherry-picked endpoints for that one, but my main goal was wondering just how far back we could go and still have Kershaw's ERA under 2.00. The answer is back to July 7, 2011, just when Kershaw was beginning his Cy Young Award finishing kick. Going back 62 starts, his ERA is 2.01.

Kershaw has allowed zero or one earned run in 12 of his last 15 starts, and during that span has allowed 14 total earned runs and has a 1.16 ERA.

There have been 50 starts in 2013 with a Bill James game score of 80 or higher. Five of those have been pitched by Kershaw, including his 81 on Monday night in Milwaukee. No other pitcher in MLB has more than three.

Kershaw walked one on Monday night, the sixth time in 10 starts this season he has walked zero or one batter. After 18 such games in 73 starts in 2008-10, Kershaw has walked one or zero 33 times in his last 74 starts.

Kershaw leads the majors with six starts this year of at least seven innings with no more than one run allowed. Matt Harvey is second with five.

Kershaw has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last 22 starts, the longest active streak in MLB. His ERA during that span is 1.46. The last Dodgers pitcher with a longer streak was Orel Hershiser, who had 27 straight starts in 1985-86.

Enjoy this time.

After a weekend watching the bullpen get taxed and destroyed against the Braves, Kershaw was economical in his nine innings, needing just 107 pitches for the 10th complete game of his career. Kershaw allowed just three hits and a walk, and struck out five, lowering his major league best ERA to 1.35.

Kemp (.340) and Ethier (.369) entered Monday with slugging percentages at embarrassing levels, but were involved in all three Dodgers runs against Milwaukee.

Kemp led off the second with a walk, then scored on Ethier's line drive triple that seemed to confound right fielder Norichika Aoki. Ethier followed in the fourth by crushing a ball into the upper deck in right field.

Kemp in the sixth pulled a ball from Yovani Gallardo into the left field seats for his first home run since Apr. 24, snapping a string of 97 plate appearances without a long ball for Kemp. It was the first time Kemp and Ethier hit home runs in the same game since Apr. 14, 2012. Amazingly, as noted by Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, Monday was just the second game this season that Kemp and Ethier have driven in a run in the same game.

Ethier and Kemp have homered in the same game 17 times in their career. The Dodgers are 15-2 in those games.

Up next

Zack Greinke makes his return to Milwaukee on Tuesday, putting his undefeated record in Miller Park on the line in the second game of the series. Rookie righty Hiram Burgos gets the call for Milwaukee.

L.A. takes a three-game losing streak into Milwaukee with rumors about coaching staff changes surrounding the team.

Don Mattingly and the rest of the Dodgers' coaching staff have been on the hot seat since before opening day, and a 17-25 record so far hasn't gotten them off of it.

Los Angeles won two out of three against the Nationals, but then were swept by the Braves. After the sweep, rumors about potential coaching changes increased dramatically. But Mattingly and his fellow coaches could be saved by a trio of starting pitchers.

Clayton Kershaw has been great so far this season. The lefty is 4-2 with a 1.40 ERA and 67 strikeouts, and has really only had one bad start. If Kershaw wins his start Monday night, then it is up to the two pitchers behind him to extend what would be the Dodgers' one-game win streak.

Next up is Zack Greinke. The righty missed five starts with a broken collarbone, but has been dominant when on the mound this season. Greinke is 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA and 14 strikeouts. After Greinke is Hyun-Jin Ryu. The second lefty is 4-2 with a 3.42 ERA and 56 strikeouts this season.

These three starters have been great so far this season. But they need to be even better over the next three days if they want to save Mattingly and a couple other coaches. Capuano and Magill had great back-to-back starts against the Braves only to come away with a no decision after the bullpen blew the game.

If the Dodgers were to sweep the Brewers, or at least win two of three, I think Mattingly will be safe, but maybe not hitting coach Mark McGwire and bullpen coach Chuck Crim, both in their first year on the Dodgers' major league staff.

The offense has been horrible, but not as bad lately as the bullpen. Two or three runs won't cut it, but neither will the bullpen. Even if the Dodgers win the series, McGwire and Crim could remain on the hot seat. Crim is responsible for managing the bullpen in that he watches over the pitchers and waits for Mattingly or Honeycutt to call him over the bullpen phone. While Mattingly is partially responsible for the bullpen's problems because he uses them a little to much, maybe getting a new bullpen coach could help.

If the bullpen were to blow another game, I think Crim should be responsible. That's only if the bullpen blows a big lead in the final game. If the bullpen were to blow Monday's game after coming in with a three run or more lead, I think Mattingly would be responsible. In the end, I think Crim is the one to blame, and while that may be a tough pill to swallow, Mattingly isn't the one watching them in the bullpen and fixing their mechanics. Mattingly was never a pitcher in the MLB, and never a pitching coach for the Dodgers, which is why blaming him for pitcher's mechanics is pointless to me.

Kershaw, Greinke, and Ryu have been good enough to win 2-0 games consistently. But they could keep McGwire on the hot seat. Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez have been revived thanks in part to McGwire, but they can't carry the team every night. If the three starters barely win the three games, I think McGwire could be the first to go even though it the Dodgers would be 20-25.

So far this season, L.A.'s offense has given Kershaw 3.22 runs per game. Even though Kershaw's ERA is 1.40, that many runs per game is not enough for the bullpen to keep the lead. When Ryu starts, LA scores 4.67 runs per game on average. While Ryu does have a higher ERA than Kershaw, it still isn't enough.

When they start, Ryu and Kershaw are given nearly a 1.5-run cushion between the runs they give up and the runs scored by L.A.'s offense. If McGwire wants to keep his job, he needs to figure out a way to increase that cushion to three or four for each starter, because even though McGwire has nothing to do with the bullpen, it could cost him his job.

If Mattingly, McGwire, and Crim want to be on the coaching staff a week from now, they better hope that Kershaw, Ryu, and Greinke pitch deep into games, the bullpen doesn't blow the games, and the offense finally starts to hit consistently. In the end, it all comes down to the three starters, because if they are knocked out early and Mattingly has to go to the bullpen, all three coaches might not be wearing Dodger blue next week.

Magill allowed one run in five innings on Sunday, with a career-best eight strikeouts and three walks. That run was originally unearned, but a scoring change too a throwing error away from shortstop Nick Punto in the fifth inning against the Braves, giving Andrelton Simmons a hit. That changed the run to unearned to earned, and raised his ERA on the season to 5.50 in four major league starts.

In eight starts between the majors and minors this season, Magill has 27 walks and 42 strikeouts in 37 innings.

Lilly pitched a minor league rehab game for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday. In two starts with the Dodgers this season Lilly is 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA, with nine strikeouts and four walks in eight innings. He last pitched for the Dodgers on Apr. 29 against the Rockies and has been sidelined with a right rib cage strain.

If the Dodgers use Thursday's off day to skip this spot in the rotation, Lilly wouldn't be needed in the rotation until May 28 against the Angels. Lilly could be used in relief, likely as a long man, this week.

In other injury news, utility man Jerry Hairston will play an extended spring training game in Arizona on Monday, dealing with injuries to his left groin and knee.

Scott Elbert is scheduled to pitch Monday night for Double-A Chattanooga, his fifth minor league rehab game. He will likely throw in back-to-back games this week before he is activated.

The Dodgers have lost each of their last two series in Milwaukee against the Brewers, going 2-5 at Miller Park during that span.

The old saying in baseball is that momentum is simply today's starting pitcher. As the Dodgers limp into Milwaukee after three painful losses in Atlanta, the good news is that Clayton Kershaw starts the series opener against the Brewers on Monday night at Miller Park.

But will Kershaw have to pitch nine innings on Monday to get a win?

Kenley Jansen threw 35 pitches over the last two days in two outings, allowing four runs in the process.

Brandon League threw 19 pitches on Sunday. That was his only outing of the last four days but League has been terrible this season and has allowed runs in seven of his last nine outings.

Ronald Belisario threw 21 pitches Friday, allowing two runs, and 15 pitches Sunday, so he would probably be good to go on Monday

Paco Rodriguez threw 21 pitches Friday, allowing a grand slam to Justin Upton, and two pitches Sunday, so he would probably be good to go Monday.

J.P. Howell threw 19 pitches Sunday and has pitched on back-to-back days only once this season.

The Dodgers might have arms reasonably fresh enough to use if needed, but one wouldn't blame Mattingly for being a little gun shy about making a call to the bullpen after his relief staff coughed up leads in all three games over the weekend.

Kershaw struck out a season-high 12 in eight scoreless innings against the Brewers at Dodger Stadium on Apr. 28. Four of Kershaw's nine starts have been scoreless outings this season. He has pitched seven innings or longer in seven of his nine starts this season.

Notes

Kershaw is coming off the higest pitch count of his career, a 132-pitch effort on Tuesday, but he also got an extra day of rest prior to this Monday outing.

Kershaw has allowed one earned run or less in 11 of his last 14 starts, allowing a total of 13 earned runs during that span for a 1.18 ERA.

It's worth noting this again. Kershaw in his last 57 starts, dating back to July 7, 2011, has a 1.99 ERA.

The Brewers are struggling even more than the Dodgers. Milwaukee has lost 14 of its last 17 games, while the Dodgers are 4-12 in their last 16 contests.

Yovani Gallardo, one of just three pitchers with 200 strikeouts in each of the last four seasons, has just 36 strikeouts in 52 innings this season.

The Dodgers home runs in May, in reverse chronological order: Scott Van Slyke, Van Slyke, Van Slyke, Dee Gordon, Adrian Gonzalez, Nick Punto, Carl Crawford, A.J. Ellis, Gonzalez. The Dodgers are dead last in MLB with nine May home runs.
