The Dodgers' $42 million Cuban sensation was 2-for-4 in his major league debut on Monday, but the most memorable moment of the game was the last play.

It feels like spring training all over again. Most of the postgame talk after Monday night's game, a 2-1 Dodgers win over the Padres, was of something amazing Yasiel Puig did, and like the Cactus League Puig is hitting .500.

But the standout play of Monday's win, in Puig's major league debut, was simply The Throw.

Up 2-1 with Chris Denorfia on first base with one out in the ninth inning, Kyle Blanks drove a ball off Brandon League to the warning track in right field. Puig not only tracked the ball down, but then threw an absolute seed, on the fly, to a waiting Adrian Gonzalez at first base to double off Denorfia for the final out of the game.

"With all the hype, it's really just amazing that it ends like that," said manager Don Mattingly. "That was fun."

Puig sort of downplayed the throw, though he did pause to watch a replay of it on a monitor above his head in the clubhouse while talking to reporters after the game.

"I'm just trying to do little things on the field to help the team win," Puig said.

But there was nothing little about that.

Starting pitcher Stephen Fife, a man who makes a living with his arm, was asked if he could make the throw that Puig made, and Fife just started laughing.

"Not with that much velocity," he said, smiling. "That was impressive."

Even catcher A.J. Ellis, sidelined on the disabled list, chimed in:

Know I'm on DL with oblique strain but that Puig throw made my arm hurt. I'll see doc tomorrow. What a debut

First base umpire Laz Diaz had to confer with home plate umpire Mark Wegner, and it was Wegner who ultimately made the out call.

"The shifting and all the stuff they have to do with a play like that, they were looking at each other to see who was going to make the call," said first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. "Mark had the best call, or the best look at it."

Mattingly joked, "I didn't know who was calling it."

Lyle Spencer of MLB.com followed up with the perfect question, "Do you think they had a hard time believing it?"

These are the kind of questions of wonderment that Puig inspires. But he wasn't alone on The Throw.

Shortstop Luis Cruz and second baseman Nick Punto executed a perfect fake on Denorfia, making him slide into second base, thinking there was a play on him.

"I saw Denorfia was stuck at second base because he slid," Gonzalez said. "The biggest part of that play is the guys up the middle faking him out. If they don't do that, he's standing back at first base."

But what people remember is The Throw. Mattingly was asked if he saw Puig make a throw like that before.

"I saw some throw on the screen today, he threw a guy out from third base from somewhere. Behind the wall or something," Mattingly said with a grin. "From Field 2 he threw a guy out on Field 1. I can't remember for sure."

Puig is the Dodgers' Paul Bunyan.

"It's hard for you not to feel that energy. It's so powerful. The crowd got excited when he grounded out to third," Mattingly said. "It's a good start. Obviously good energy. He's going to bring that. It was nice, a good ending."

Fife pitched into the sixth inning Monday night in his seventh major league start to earn his first career win.

Stephen Fife's most recent stay with the Dodgers will likely be his shortest, but he picked up the most precious of souvenirs on Monday night. Making a spot start in place of the triceps-addled Chris Capuano, Fife earned the his first major league win in the Dodgers' 2-1 victory over the Padres in the series opener at Dodger Stadium.

"After seven tries I finally got one, after a couple of close calls last year," Fife said after the game. "It's pretty awesome."

Fife lasted 5⅓ innings and allowed just one run on Monday night. He walked two and struck out five, a marked improvement over his other big league start this season, when he failed to get out of the fifth inning in a no-decision in Baltimore on Apr. 21.

"I was pretty uncomfortable in Baltimore. My thought process wasn't so much about making the quality the pitch but how am I going to get my arm up to throw to get the ball there. It was a lot different physical feeling for me today," Fife said. "Tonight was just about making quality pitches more often than not."

Fife hit the disabled list a few days after that Baltimore start with right shoulder bursitis, and he spent the better part of a month on the proverbial shelf. He was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday, the same day he was activated from the disabled list, but called back up Monday for this start.

"He threw 70 his last outing and he's been off with the shoulder. And 70 in A-ball isn't the same as getting big league hitters out," said manager Don Mattingly. "We kind of felt like he hit the wall there."

Those 70 pitches came last Tuesday with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga in a rehab start. Fife felt he might have been able to pitch beyond his 76 pitches on Monday, but understood the decision by Mattingly.

"I'm not going to fault Donnie. My legs were starting to get a little heavy and the ball was starting to come up a bit," Fife said. "I think there was probably more in the tank, but in that situation after a couple of hits, that's just the way it goes."

What's next for Fife is likely a return ticket to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, as the Dodgers need a corresponding roster move to activate shortstop Hanley Ramirez from the disabled list. Capuano's MRI results weren't immediately known or revealed after the game Monday, but the general thought is that barring something unforeseen Capuano will be able to make his start on Saturday.

But for Fife, on the second straight day the Dodgers needed a spot start from Triple-A, the results were impressive.

"We felt like a guy coming up, off a shoulder thing, with one rehab start, to get us that far we felt like he did his job," Mattingly said.

Puig threw out Chris Denorfia at first base from the right field wall, on the fly, to end the game.

The flavor of June, Yasiel Puig, dazzled in his debut with a pair of hits, but it was the two offensive heroes of May who continued their production into a new month to lift the Dodgers over the Padres 2-1 in the opener of a 10-game homestand Monday night at Dodger Stadium.

Puig ended the game by catching a Kyle Blanks drive at the right field wall, then threw on the fly to first base to retire Chris Denorfia for the final end of the game.

Adrian Gonzalez homered to right field in the first inning, and Scott Van Slyke homered to left field in the second for a quick 2-0 lead. And Stephen Fife made those two runs hold up.

Fife allowed just three singles through five scoreless frames, but with one out in the sixth inning Alexi Amarista challenged Puig twice and prevailed. Amarista hit one into the right field corner that Puig got to in a hurry and unleashed a strong throw to second base that made it closer than it probably should have been. Then Chase Headley dumped a single into right field and Amarista beat a strong throw to the plate from Puig to cut the Dodgers' lead in half at 2-1.

Fife was removed after the RBI single, but with five strikeouts and just one run allowed, in his first start since getting activated from the disabled list, that was about as much as the Dodgers could have hoped for from a spot start. It was Fife's first major league victory.

Puig singled in the first inning, a soft liner to center field, the first since Van Slyke last May to get a hit in his first major league at-bat.

In the third inning Puig hit a routine grounder to third that he nearly beat out.

Puig in the sixth hit a high bounding ball off the glove of Kyle Blanks at first base that was probably generously scored a base hit. Puig turned on the jets heading from first to third base on a Nick Punto single, but was stranded at third by a 3-6-1 double play hit into by Gonzalez.

Puig grounded into a fielders choice in the eighth inning.

Puig is the first Dodger to have two hits in his major league debut since Russell Martin on May 5, 2006.

Kenley Jansen allowed Everth Cabrera to single and steal second in the eighth innings, but Jansen struck out Amarista and got Headley to fly out to end the threat to preserve the one-run lead. Batters this season against Jansen are 0-for-27 with runners in scoring position, with 12 strikeouts, one walk, and one hit by pitch.

Brandon League retired the Padres in the ninth inning for his 12th save of the season, with an assist from Puig.

Elbow pain after back-to-back outings have caused the left-handed reliever to get shut downa for an unidentified period of time.

Scott Elbert's comeback to the Dodgers hit a snag and the left-handed reliever's season could be in jeopardy. The Dodgers have shut down Elbert after he experienced elbow pain, and the left-hander will visit Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Tuesday.

Elbert was making progress in returning to the Dodgers in May. After roughly six weeks in extended spring training, he began a minor league rehab assignment on May 10 and pitched a total of eight games over 17 days between Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Chattanooga.

"Scotty has been shut down. For how long I don't know," manager Don Mattingly said. "But we tried those two in a row, after that he hasn't gone anywhere."

Elbert, 27, pitched back-to-back outings once on his rehab assignment, in his final two games. He pitched a full inning on May 25 for the Lookouts, then the next night pitched to just one batter. It was after that Elbert began experiencing elbow pain, so the Dodgers decided to shut him down.

It was the first back-to-back outings for Elbert since his pair of offseason elbow surgeries. Elbert had arthroscopic surgery on his elbow in September, then another arthroscopic procedure for further cleanup in January.

The Dodgers transferred him to the 60-day disabled list on Friday to create room on the 40-man roster for relief pitcher Peter Moylan. Elbert last pitched for the Dodgers on Aug. 26, 2012.

Ryu and Capuano are scheduled to start against the Braves on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

The Dodgers battle the Padres on Monday night with Stephen Fife on the mound, the second straight spot start needed by the club. But the Dodgers expect to have starting pitchers Hyun-jin Ryu and Chris Capuano back on the mound on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Ryu missed Sunday's start with a left foot contusion, after taking a comebacker off the foot in Tuesday's shutout of the Angels. He felt soreness when testing the foot in a light bullpen session on Saturday, and had another bullpen session on Monday, a rarity for Ryu, who doesn't normally throw bullpens between starts.

"It was understood that I didn't go full speed today, but I went as far as I could," Ryu said before Monday's game. "It's a lot better today."

Capuano, who missed Monday's start with tightness in his left triceps, has an MRI on his left arm on Monday and as long as those results come back with good news he will be able to make his next start.

"I'm assuming, and I guess I shouldn't assume at this point with our club, but I'm assuming that he's going to be okay and he's going to be able to make his next start," manager Don Mattingly said before the game. "The only thing that would change that is if the MRI comes back and tells us something different."

The Dodgers play the Braves in a four-game series beginning Thursday night at Dodger Stadium. Friday would feature Ryu against Paul Maholm for Atlanta, with Saturday pitting Capuano against Kris Medlen.

"I'm pretty confident I should make my next start," Ryu said. "Donnie and Honey (pitching coach Rick Honeycutt) are going to talk about that day today, and whatever day they choose I'll be ready for that day."

With leadoff man Carl Crawford on the disabled list, Puig will bat first in his major league debut, the first Dodger to do so since Jose Offerman on Aug. 19, 1990. Offerman homered in his first major league at-bat. Manager Don Mattingly is hoping for a spark at the top of the order.

"It just kind of felt right, get a guy up top with a chance to create some energy. He could steal a bag, he could hit a home run. He can pretty much do anything," Mattingly said. "He seems like the right guy for now. When we get Carl back, we'll see how we go from there."

Puig met with the media in the interview room before stretching, a rarity for a player making his major league debut. He mostly said all the right things, as interpreted by Tim Bravo.

"I'm not surprised (at batting leadoff), but I'm just going to bat in the position they tell me to play," Puig said. "I'm happy to be here, and thank the club for the opportunity. I'm going to do whatever I can to help the team."

Prior to the game Puig took in extra outfield practice in right field with coach Davey Lopes. Puig starts in right field on Monday for the Dodgers, a position he played in 31 games for Double-A Chattanooga. But center field could be on the horizon as well, especially with Matt Kemp out.

"Right field was easy because that's pretty much where he's played the whole time. He's played a couple of times in center. We'd like him to be more comfortable, to be somewhere he's played the most. We'll try to get a little bit of work as we can in center," Mattingly said. "From what we've seen so far, right field is his spot."

Mattingly said the decision to recall Puig was made a few days ago, but the Dodgers had to maneuver to call up spot starters for both Sunday and Monday. All the talk of adding a "true center fielder" was a ruse.

"I pretty much knew and I didn't want to talk about it," Mattingly quipped. "I was just bullshitting with you."

Notes

As for Quentin, he could still pinch hit. Mattingly said he did not receive a phone call prior to this series from Joe Torre in the league office, as both teams did before their April 15-17 series at Dodger Stadium.

Zach Lee allowed two hits over seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts in two appearances last week for Double-A Chattanooga, and on Monday was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week.
But they also lost another starter, as left fielder Carl Crawford was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain. The move allowed the Dodgers to recall Stephen Fife, who is making a spot start in place of Chris Capuano on Monday against the Padres.

Crawford injured the hamstring on Saturday after hitting the second of two doubles. The malady was originally categorized as a cramp, but was worse upon further review.

"With Carl they were originally talking about a couple of days, but after they saw the MRI today they felt like it would be a couple of weeks," said manager Don Mattingly. "It's not anything major, not like Hanley (Ramirez), but they knew it wasn't going to be four days, or five days. It was going to be more than we could afford."

In the span of five days, the Dodgers have placed starting position players Matt Kemp, A.J. Ellis, and Crawford on the disabled list. Crawford is the 14th Dodgers player to be placed on the disabled list this season.

Crawford is hitting .301/.358/.470 this season and leads the team with 32 runs scored, 12 doubles, and nine stolen bases. With 51 games played, he is tied for second on the team with Kemp, who is also on the DL.

As for Ramirez, he is scheduled to play in one more rehab game with Class-A Rancho Cucmonga on Monday night, and the Dodgers could have their shortstop back as early as Tuesday. He has missed four weeks with a left hamstring strain.

"I'm hoping (he's back Tuesday)," Mattingly said.

Mattingly also said adding Puig didn't have much to do with Crawford's injury, that the 22-year-old Cuban would still be here even if Crawford wasn't placed on the disabled list.

"We're still in that spot where we need an outfielder, so I think yes," Mattingly said. "As soon as Matt went down, our first kind of thought was Yasiel."

As for Fife, he is likely headed for the same fate as Matt Magill on Sunday, though hopefully not of the nine-walk, four-homer variety. Assuming Chris Capuano's MRI exam shows nothing out of the ordinary, Fife will likely be optioned back to Triple-A to make room for Ramirez once he is activated from the disabled list.
