Not much has clicked for the Dodgers, but everything clicked Saturday.

The Dodgers are desperately looking for wins and momentum, and put forth arguably the best team effort all season Saturday, defeating the Padres 6-1.

Zack Greinke led the way by pitching eight innings of one run ball, while accumulating a season-high eight strike outs. From the outset Greinke consistently attacked the strike zone and had Bud Black's team off balanced by changing speeds. Padres starter Edinson Volquez put forth a valiant effort, but got out dueled because of seven walks and some awfully tough luck. Volquez didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning.

Don Mattingly's club caught a much needed break in the top of the fifth inning, as Skip Schumaker was clearly out at first base but ruled safe. On the play, Juan Uribe scored the games first run. Despite the recent trend of blown calls, the MLB doesn't intend on expanding the current review system.

Uribe's run seemed like a game altering play, and could've lead to a lucky win. However, the Dodgers made sure to earn the win by adding insurance numerous times.

Adrian Gonzalez started the sixth inning rally by hitting a solo shot in the sixth frame, extending the lead to 2-0. Prior to the at bat, Gonzalez was having a disastrous series at 0-10 against his former mates.

Later on in the sixth Friday's hero Perdo Ciriaco made a costly error, allowing two Dodgers to score. The sixth inning scoring continued via Skip Schumaker's RBI single.

Hanley Ramirez decided to join the party in the seventh by blasting a monstrous home run, extending the lead to 6-0. The ball landed in the third story of the brick outfield building.

The Padres sole run came in the bottom of the eighth on a Jesus Guzman RBI single.

Notes

In the top of the first inning Yasiel Puig drew his first unintentional walk. The freebee came on Puig's 70th plate appearance. Puig went on to garner another unintentional pass in the sixth inning.

Yasiel Puig went 0-3 with two strikeouts and is obviously struggling against off-speed pitches. Saturday's disappointing individual effort was his third hitless game of his brief career.

According to our own Eric Stephen, Scott Van Slyke is tied for second in home runs on both the Dodgers and Albuqueque Isotopes (Triple-A affiliate). Van Slyke is eligible to return Wednesday, and should be back right around then.

Third base coach Tim Wallach got hit in the hip area by a Hanley Ramirez foul ball, yet appeared to be fine and continued to coach.

Greinke got the best of Carlos Quentin without throwing punches, sitting him down in all three meetings.

Padres outfielder Chris Denorfia made another web gem catch by laying out and robbing Juan Uribe of a RBI double.

The Padres eight game home winning streak is over.

Up next

The Dodgers close out their four game series Sunday against the Padres trying to earn a split. Don Mattingly will send Chris Capuano to the mound on three days rest against Andrew Cashner.

Saturday particulars

Home Runs: Adrian Gonzalez (9), Hanley Ramirez (3)

WP - Zack Greinke (4-2) 8 IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 8 strikeouts

LP - Edinson Volquez (5-6) 5 2/3 IP, 2 hits, 2 runs, 7 walks, 7 strikeouts

Zack Greinke is new to the National League West, but already posses plenty of enemies.

The story of Zack Greinke during the 2013 season epitomizes the Dodgers problems. From underperformance to injury, Greinke could easily be the driving force behind it all. Greinke hasn't pitched at Petco park since the brawl on April 11, when he suffered a broken collarbone due to Carlos Quentin's football-esque tackle.

Quentin is back in the lineup after missing seven straight games.

Quentin is currently battling a shoulder injury and hadn't played since June 14, though he feels better and took batting practice for the first time in over a week Friday. In addition, Greinke and Quentin have talked since the incident, and appeared to solve their respective differences.

After signing a $147 million dollar deal, Greinke was expected to give the boys in blue the best 1-2 punch in baseball. Instead, Greinke only sports nine starts and an ERA of 4.22. Opposing the former Cy-Young winner will be Edinson Volquez.

Volquez, the 2008 all-star for the Cincinnati Reds, continues to be very inconsistent for the Padres. On the year, Volquez is 5-5 with an ERA of 5.84. The Dodgers haven't seen Volquez work to date, but went 2-1 against him over four outings last season.

Both sides have had ample time to calm down, yet baseball's unwritten rules could spell for more extracurricular fighting Saturday.

The San Diego bullpen, which recorded 27 outs Friday night after Clayton Richard felt pain in his shoulder, will receive reinforcements on Saturday. Both a Anthony Bass and Brad Boxberger will be recalled before the game, per Corey Brock of MLB.com.

The Dodgers are 4-5 against the Padres this season, including 2-3 in San Diego.

The Dodgers conclude their nine-game road trip with a four-game weekend series in San Diego, battling the Padres at Petco Park for the first time since Carlos Quentin broke Zack Greinke's collarbone. Here is a look at the television scheduled and pitching matchups for the National League West showdown.

Thursday, 7:10 p.m. (KCAL)

Since getting recalled Stephen Fife has posted a 2.65 ERA with 16 strikeouts and six walks in 17 innings, and in his 10th major league start he finally faces an opponent that he has seen before in the Padres. Jason Marquis has allowed five runs in three starts against the Dodgers this season and has generally owned them throughout his career.

Friday, 7:10 p.m. (Prime Ticket)

This is only the second battle of left-handed NL West Claytons despite both being in the same division since 2009. In their only previous meeting, Clayton Kershaw got the 2-1 win over Clayton Richard and San Diego, last July 13.

Saturday, 4:15 p.m. (Fox)

Greinke returns to the site of his Apr. 11 brawl, his first time facing Quentin and the Padres since the infamous hit by pitch. Greinke followed up two great starts with a dud in Pittsburgh in his last outing. Edinson Volquez has had a bizarre season; his ERA, by month, has been 6.39 in April, 4.02 in May and 7.91 in June.

Sunday, 1:10 p.m. (KCAL)

The Dodgers haven't announced anything yet, but with Matt Magill pulled after just two innings and 42 pitches on Wednesday, plus the fact that he's the only starting pitcher left on the 40-man roster, makes him the favorite to start on Sunday. Andrew Cashner get the call in the series finale for the Padres, looking for his ninth straight start of six innings or more..
