The Dodgers have scored two or fewer runs in six of their last 10 games, including Tuesday night's loss to the Cubs.

Stop the presses, the Dodgers are mortal. With their loss to the Cubs on Tuesday night the Dodgers tasted defeat for the third time in their last four games. The Dodgers, who made history with their recent run of 42 wins in 50 games, have followed that up by going 5-5 in their last 10 games.

The offense has been held to two or fewer runs in six of those 10 games, and as a team the Dodgers are hitting just .223/.301/.331 during that span.

"I feel like it's nothing more than a little bit of a lull," said manager Don Mattingly after the game. "We have some guys who are a little tired, honestly. We've had some funny start times from the time we've got back. We haven't had consistent times until these last two. We've been a little bit run down, but we'll be fine."

That lack of offense stung Clayton Kershaw, who saw two or fewer runs of support for the 14th time in his 28 starts, and suffered his eighth loss of the year despite a microscopic 1.72 ERA.

But Kershaw struggled in his own right on Tuesday. Only when he struggles, that means two runs were charged to his ledger.

"You're never going to have your best stuff every game. But you have to figure out ways to get guys out, regardless," Kershaw said. "Tonight there were just too many guys on base, too many walks, I got behind in the count, and stuff like that."

Kershaw did strikeout nine on the night, but a high pitch count led to his removal with two outs and two on in the sixth inning, down 2-0.

"We didn't see typical Clayton tonight. He needed a lot of pitches in the first inning. I thought they fought him pretty good, they fouled off a lot of balls. He wasn't quite as sharp as he has been," Mattingly said. "It seemed like it was a fight every inning almost. I felt like he had been far enough. I just wanted to stop it there with Brian, to give ourselves a chance to get back in the game and keep it right there at two (runs)."

The Dodgers did eventually scrape together two runs but the bullpen allowed one more, which proved to be the winning run for the Cubs. The Cubs loaded the bases when Ronald Belisario hit Junior Lake with a pitch in the seventh inning, a pitch Mattingly thought Lake offered at trying to bunt.

"I wanted to make sure, at least give (home plate umpire Gary Cederstrom) an opportunity to say (Lake) attempted to bunt," Mattingly said. "I wasn't looking for a foul ball; he knew it hit him. But if he's trying to bunt, it's still a strike. But (first base umpire Kerwin Danley), when he checked, said no, and I had no argument at that point."

The Cubs plated their third run of the game on a double play ground ball off the bat of pinch hitter Brian Bogusevic.

The Dodgers, who during their remarkable run won 11 straight one-run games, fell to 19-13 in one-run contests, including 12-5 at home. The Dodgers saw their division lead shrink to 8½ games over the Diamondbacks, extra-inning winners at home over the Padres on Tuesday night.

As the Dodgers are finding out, winning 80% of their games is a hard pace to keep up.

Luckily, they don't have to. Their magic number to clinch the National League West is 23, but the team is mostly focused on Wednesday afternoon, when they finish off their series against the Cubs. In the daily grind of Major League Baseball, the next day is often the farthest look ahead.

"That's why we play every day. You can't think about it too long," Kershaw said. "You probably don't anticipate us winning 80% of our games, but at the same time you don't ever think about losing either. It was bound to happen, we just have to come win tomorrow."

The Dodgers on Tuesday extended their major league record by drawing three million fans for the 27th season in 2013, and did so in their quickest manner in five years.

The Dodgers announced an attendance of 52,326 for Tuesday's game against the Cubs, their 19th sellout of the season. It put them over the three million mark in attendance for the second straight season and for the 17th time in the last 18 seasons.

At 3,048,474 tickets sold for the season and 45,500 fans per game, the Dodgers lead Major League Baseball in attendance. If the Dodgers keep up that pace for their final 14 home dates of the regular season, they will have roughly 3.685 million, which would be their fourth highest total ever.

The Dodgers' franchise record for paid attendance is 3,857,036, set in 2007 and the sixth highest total in National League history.

The Dodgers reached three million tickets sold in their 67th home game, the earliest they have reached the milestone since 2008.

Before "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" was played during the seventh inning stretch the Dodgers announced the milestone on the video boards at Dodger Stadium while Dodgers players and coaches applauded the fans from the third base dugout.

The Dodgers are 39-28 at home this season.

Kershaw lowered his ERA ever so slightly but pitched his shortest outing in four months as the Dodgers lost for the third time in their last four games.

Clayton Kershaw had a rare off night on Tuesday and the Dodgers provided very little offensive support. The Cubs took advantage for a 3-2 victory to snap the Dodgers' eight-game winning streak over Chicago.

Kershaw was fighting all night, beginning with a 29-pitch first inning that didn't produce any runs for the Cubs but set the tone for the night.

Cubs pitcher Travis Wood singled to open the third inning, just the second hit by a pitcher against Kershaw all season. He advanced to second base one out later when Darwin Barney reached on catcher's interference. Actual real life major league No. 3 hitter Dioner Navarro, whose .193/.276/.324 season in 2011 for the Dodgers represented an improvement over his previous two years, continued his resurgent season and made Kershaw pay with an RBI single to left center field for a 1-0 lead.

The run, though unearned, snapped Kershaw's consecutive scoreless streak at 18 innings.

Chicago struck again in the sixth inning, as Cody Ransom lined a ball directly off Kershaw's left shin for a single to open the frame. Kershaw threw one warmup pitch with assistant trainer Greg Harrel and manager Don Mattingly at the mound, but remained in the game. Kershaw walked Darnell McDonald then struck out the next two hitters to nearly get out of the inning. But leadoff man Starlin Castro had other plans, with an RBI single to left field for a 2-0 Cubs lead.

At 107 pitches Kershaw was pulled with two on and two outs in the sixth inning, his shortest outing since April 23 when he lasted just five innings against the Mets in New York.

Brian Wilson recorded the final out of the sixth inning to limit the damage. With one of his two runs allowed unearned, Kershaw actually saw his MLB-leading ERA go down ever so slightly, from 1.7244 to 1.7206.

Kershaw did strikeout nine on the night, giving him 197 strikeouts on the season to take over the National League lead from the shut-down Matt Harvey of the Mets. Kershaw is three strikeouts away from joining Sandy Koufax (1961-66) and Don Drysdale (1962-65) as the only Dodgers ever with four consecutive seasons of 200 strikeouts or more.

The Dodgers struck back with an unearned run of their own in the sixth against Wood. Hanley Ramirez blooped a single to right for his second safety of the night, then later advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt by Wood. Juan Uribe singled with two outs to score Ramirez to cut the Dodgers deficit to 2-1.

The top of the seventh proved painful for both teams, though it was the Dodgers that suffered on the scoreboard. After Donnie Murphy singled off Ronald Belisario's shin to put runners on first and second base with nobody out, Belisario then hit Junior Lake on the hand with a pitch. But instead of getting called a foul ball as the hand is part of the bat, Lake was awarded first base to load the bases. A double play by Brian Bogusevic brought home a run for a 3-1 Cubs advantage.

Even after getting hit on the foot Belisario remained in the game and pitched two innings. It was the first outing in seven days for Belisario, who was one of the players in the Dodgers clubhouse affected by a cold in the last few days.

The Dodgers used two singles and a hit batsman to score a run off reliever Pedro Strop in the eighth inning, but with first and second and one out pinch hitter Skip Schumaker didn't heed these words:

Schumaker grounded into a 6-3 double play to end the threat and keep the Cubs ahead 3-2.

Kevin Gregg, released by the Dodgers after failing to make the team out of spring training this season, recorded three outs in the ninth inning for his 27th save of the season for the Cubs. With Carl Crawford on base as the tying run, Gregg got Yasiel Puig to pop out in the infield for the final out of the game.

Notes

Puig went 2-for-5 on the night, his fifth multi-hit game in five games against the Cubs this season. Puig is 11-for-20 (.550) against Chicago.

Hanley Ramirez went 3-for-4 and scored a run, his first three-hit game since July 20.

The Dodgers have scored a total of 12 runs in his eight losses this season, and scored more than two runs in just one of those games, when they scored three on May 26 against St. Louis. Kershaw has a 3.93 ERA in those eight losses, and an 0.996 ERA in his other 20 starts.

Crawford went 0-for-4 with a walk to snap his eight-game hitting streak.

Up next

The Dodgers send Ricky Nolasco to the mound on Wednesday, looking to close out a stellar August of his own. Nolasco goes for his fifth win of August in a rare noon weekday start at Dodger Stadium, while old friend Edwin Jackson starts for the Cubs on getaway day.

Including Tuesday's game, Kemp will have missed 126 of the Dodgers' last 260 games, dating back to 2012.

Matt Kemp made progress in his return from a left ankle sprain and could play in a minor league rehab game with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga as early as Thursday. Kemp ran the bases on Tuesday before the Dodgers' game against the Cubs at Dodger Stadium, under close scrutiny from the training staff.

"That's the most fun I've had in a while," Kemp said.

Kemp has been sidelined since spraining his ankle on July 21 in Washington D.C., and Tuesday night will be his 35th game missed on his latest disabled list stint. Manager Don Mattingly said Kemp would run the bases again on Wednesday, then will determine when Kemp will join the Class-A Quakes on a rehab assignment. Mattingly said Thursday was a possibility for Kemp to play in Rancho Cucamonga, but nothing is certain.

"We'll see when we get there. If he goes good today then he'll run tomorrow, and then we'll see," Mattingly said. "I can tell just looking at his reaction (that Kemp felt good). He had a big smile on his face, knowing he was able to make turns, go hard and stop and all that."

Minor league seasons, including for the Quakes, end on Monday, so Kemp would at most get to play five regular season games with Rancho Cucamonga. The California League playoffs are also a possibility for Kemp, though Mattingly wouldn't say how long he thought it would take Kemp to get sharp after missing 70 of 81 games through Tuesday's game against the Cubs.

"We'll play it by ear," Mattingly said.

The pending return of Kemp gives the Dodgers the rare good problem to have, with four outfielders for three spots. It is something they have had for all of two games this season, and for really about a total of 10 innings as Kemp was hurt in both games, on July 5 and July 21.

Mattingly said of his four outfielders that Andre Ethier is the one he can play all over, and while Yasiel Puig could also play all over the club thinks Puig's best fit is in right field. Mattingly said that when they played, Carl Crawford would be in left field and Kemp in center field. When Kemp returns, all four outfielders will rotate for three spots.

"We'll see where we're at. I'm not going to try to make lineups out now," Mattingly said. "You get to a point in the season, for all of our guys, it's got to be about us winning. Matt's had a rough year physically, that's not that hard to see. I think Matt knows where we're at and sees what's going on.

"I've talked to all of our guys, we try to let them know the situation. I'm going to do the best I can trying to put what I think gives us the best chance to win. Somebody's going to be mad."

The left-hander is the favorite for the National League Cy Young Award, which would be his second in three seasons. Kershaw is poised to join some elite company, and when factoring age could enter unprecedented territory.

There are a few caveats here. There was only one Cy Young Award for both leagues from 1956-1966, which make Warren Spahn and Sandy Koufax look all the more impressive. There was only a single vote for the Cy through 1969, then from 1970-2009. the balloting was done on a 5-3-1 basis for first, second and third place votes, respectively. Since 2010 Cy Young voters name a top five on their ballot, with points awarded on a 7-4-3-2-1 basis.

Only Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Jim Palmer and Brandon Webb have finished in the top two for at least three straight seasons. Martinez was the youngest during his award run, starting at age 25. Kershaw began his hardware collection at age 23, which would make him the youngest member of an elite group if he either wins his second award or finishes second to Adam Wainwright, the one with the most realistic chance to unseat Kershaw for the award.

Kershaw has allowed 11 total runs, including 10 earned runs, in his last 10 starts, over 77 innings. He has lasted eight innings in three straight starts, and in eight of his last 11 starts, and on the season is averaging 7.35 innings per outing.

Kershaw leads the majors in quality starts with 23, and also leads MLB with 18 ultra quality starts (games with at least seven innings pitched and no more than two earned runs allowed). He has seven starts with at least eight innings pitched and no runs allowed, including each of his last two starts. Nobody else in MLB has more than three such starts.

Heading into Tuesday night, Kershaw carries a streak of 16 consecutive scoreless innings and a major league best 1.72 ERA.

Dodgers starters have a 2.05 ERA in five games against the Cubs this season, all Dodgers wins, and Kershaw hasn't even faced Chicago yet. Kershaw in his career is 3-1 with a 1.61 ERA in four starts against the Cubs, including a win over Chicago at Dodger Stadium in each of the last three seasons.

Travis Wood gets the start on the mound for the Cubs, but will also have to face Kershaw at the plate.

Opposing pitchers are 1-for-45 against Kershaw in 2013 with two walks and 27 strikeouts. The .086 OPS against Kershaw by pitchers is the third-lowest among pitchers with at least 20 plate appearances against other pitchers, trailing only Mat Latos (.048, 1-for-42) and Marco Estrada (.083, 0-for-22, two walks).

Tyson Ross of the Padres was the one pitcher to get a hit against Kershaw in 2013, and did so on Apr. 17.
The Dodgers beat the Cubs four times in Chicago earlier in August without using either Zack Greinke or Clayton Kershaw. Those two pitchers start the first two games of the series for the Dodgers as the Cubs come to Chavez Ravine.

The Dodgers will look to rebound from their first series loss in 10 weeks as they host the Cubs for three games beginning Monday night at Dodger Stadium. Here is a look at the pitching matchups for the three-game series, which includes the only weekday day game at Dodger Stadium this season aside from opening day.

Monday, 7:10 p.m. (Prime Ticket)

Zack Greinke has allowed 10 runs in his last nine starts, and during that span is 6-1 with a 1.41 ERA while averaging over seven innings per start. He does have a 4.45 ERA in five career starts against the Cubs, but the damage was done at Wrigley Field, with 16 runs allowed in nine innings in two losses in Chicago. In three career starts against the Cubs outside of Chicago, Greinke has allowed one run in 21⅓ innings, with 28 strikeouts and seven walks in three wins. Jake Arrieta put up a 5.46 ERA in 69 career games, including 63 starts with the Orioles, but at age 27 got a change of scenery on July 2 when he was traded with Pedro Strop for Scott Feldman and Steve Clevenger. Arrieta has a 3.71 ERA in his three starts with Chicago, though six of his seven runs allowed came in his last start, last Tuesday against the Nationals. This is Arrieta's first appearance for the Cubs outside of Wrigley Field.

Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. (KCAL)

Clayton Kershaw has lasted at least eight innings in eight of his last 11 starts and takes a 16-inning scoreless streak into Tuesday's contest. The Dodgers swept the Cubs in Wrigley Field from Aug. 1-4 without using Greinke or Kershaw in the four-game series. Travis Wood is 0-3 with a 5.16 ERA in August and the Cubs have lost four of his five starts during the month, including allowing five runs in 3⅓ innings on Aug. 2.

Wednesday, 12:10 p.m. (Prime Ticket)

Ricky Nolasco has allowed five total runs in three starts at Dodger Stadium, and has quality starts in his last three starts overall. Since joining the Dodgers on July 6 Nolasco is 5-1 with a 2.53 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 14 walks in 53⅓ innings. The well-traveled Edwin Jackson has a 5.00 ERA in the first season of a four-year contract, including a 6.95 ERA in August, with 41 baserunners allowed in 22 innings in four Cubs losses.
