Kemp had a procedure on Monday in North Carolina to remove torn cartilage from his left ankle, an injury that cost him 52 games and shut him down for the postseason in 2013.

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp's busy offseason continued Monday, as he had surgery to remove torn cartilage in his left ankle, per Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. It is the second offseason surgery for Kemp, who had a procedure to clean up the A-C- joint in his left shoulder on Oct. 8.

The Dodgers added that the surgery was an arthroscopic procedure which involved several spurs, a loose body, and doing a microfracture on the talus bone, the weight-bearing bone in his ankle which had swelling in September.

Kemp sprained his left ankle in an awkward slide at home plate in Washginton D.C. against the Nationals on July 21, missing 52 games in his third disabled list stint of the season. Kemp returned in September but was shut down during the season's final weekend with fears that he could break his ankle by continuing to play.

Kemp's agent Dave Stewart told Hernandez the procedure was done by ankle specialist Robert Anderson in North Carolina, and that Kemp as expected won't be able to put any weight on the ankle for the month.

The Dodgers added that Kemp will be in a splint for two weeks and in a non-weight-bearing walking boot for two weeks after that.

General manager Ned Colletti said earlier on Monday no surgical procedures were planned at this time for anyone on the roster, which was probably technically correct since Kemp's surgery was likely already done when Colletti said it, but still fishy nonetheless.

More Hernandez:

But Stewart tried to find a positive in the setback, saying Kemp will be able to do the upper-body work he couldn’t do last winter. Kemp will also be able to strengthen his core and hamstrings, the agent said.

"We’re anticipating he’ll be ready for the season," Stewart said.

Kemp hit just .270/.328/.395 with six home runs in 73 games in 2013, including .251/.305/.335 in the first two months of the season after his offseason was decimated by major surgery on his left shoulder.

It sounds like this time around Kemp won't be as limited in his offseason workouts, which could mean better production and/or health in 2014. But since Kemp has missed 145 of the last 290 games dating back to 2012, he's got a lot to prove heading into next season.

In addition to being on crutches for a month, Kemp will also have a cleanup procedure to deal with arthritis in the AC joint of his left shoulder.

LOS ANGELES -- Just when it looked like the Dodgers were getting reasonably close to full strength for the playoffs, they were dealt a crushing blow on Sunday as Matt Kemp is out for the remainder of the postseason after an MRI showed swelling around the talus bone in his left ankle.

"The MRI scan indicated swelling in one of the major weight-bearing bones of the ankle. Since that is an area that can be vulnerable with impact and injury, we have to protect Matt," said team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache. "That indicates a weakness of the bone and we'll have to protect his weight bearing."

Kemp will be on crutches for about a month in an effort to keep weight off the ankle. Dr. ElAttrache said major surgery was unlikely on Kemp's ankle unless there was a fracture, though a minor arthroscopic procedure might be needed for some cleanup.

Kemp first sprained the ankle on July 21 in Washington D.C. against the Nationals and missed 52 games on the disabled list. After coming back on Sept. 16 Kemp hit .314/.385/.486 with three doubles and a home run in 11 games, including nine starts, but he was a late scratch from Saturday's lineup after feeling soreness in the ankle.

That soreness was first chalked up to playing nearly every day after several weeks off, but Kemp's pain increased Saturday night and he still felt stiffness on Sunday morning. New X-rays were taken, which showed no damage, but the MRI on Sunday revealed the bad news.

"We basically wanted to make sure that we were going to let him play with pain," Dr. ElAttrache said. "There were a few things that we looked for that we absolutely wouldn't let him play with, and this was one of those things."

Previous X-rays and MRI exams didn't show the swelling, though Dr. ElAttrache estimated it could have been building over these last few weeks on a microscopic level.

Kemp found out the results "in the third or fourth inning" of Sunday's game.

"I have to get my legs under me. I haven't had my legs under me in a while," Kemp said. "It's going to be a pretty busy offseason for me."

That busy offseason also includes a cleanup procedure on his left shoulder, but not in the same spot he had surgery last year. This year's shoulder surgery will deal with progressive arthritis in the AC joint, the same area that Kemp hurt on July 5 in San Francisco, and the cause of the second of his three stints on the disabled list this season.

The surgery hasn't yet been scheduled, but will require six weeks of recovery before Kemp can resume baseball activities. Stop me if you have heard this before, but Kemp after these procedures and rest is expected to be ready for spring training.

But that's what the message was heading into 2013, and Kemp ended up hitting .270/.328/.395 with six home runs in just 73 games.

Manager Don Mattingly didn't find out that Kemp was out for the playoffs until after Sunday's game finished.

"Honestly two weeks ago I didn't think Matt was going to make the playoffs. Then all of a sudden Matt could make it back, and it looked like a definite and he looked good," Mattingly said. "Now, he can't again. At this point there is nothing to do about it but move on.

"I don't think anybody out there in that room is willing to give this thing up because Matt is hurt. Without saying this in a bad way, we played all year long without Matt. We went 42-8 without Matt. We're capable of winning. We're not going to rollover. Obviously if you don't have Andre and you don't have Matt you're not as good as you could be. But we're still good enough to win."

With Sunday's regular season finale essentially an exhibition game before the playoffs with nothing at stake, the Dodgers are playing it safe with center fielder Matt Kemp and his sore left ankle.

LOS ANGELES -- Mat Kemp was a late scratch from the starting lineup on Saturday night against the Rockies, but both manager Don Mattingly and the center fielder downplayed the left ankle soreness that kept him out of the Dodgers' 1-0 loss to the Rockies at Dodger Stadium.

"I feel okay with it. He took BP. Just as he went to get loose for the game he was having trouble getting loose. I feel like we're being a little cautious," Mattingly said. "He has been playing a lot. We've been trying to give him as many at-bats as possible without going too far. Today, having trouble getting loose we didn't want to take any chances."

More: Rockies 1, Dodgers 0 Kemp scratched

Kemp had played in all 11 games since getting activated on Sept. 16 before sitting Saturday, including six consecutive starts. He chalked it up to playing every day after missing nearly two full months, saying his left ankle was "just irritated."

But it is those 52 games missed with a sprained left ankle, suffered July 21 in Washington D.C., that have the Dodgers worried.

"I'm a little bit [concerned], just because of what we've been through," Mattingly said. "I don't know how much good it's going to do me to be all nervous and worry about it. I feel like we're being cautious, and I feel like he's going to be ready to go."

Mattingly said Kemp won't start on Sunday in the regular season finale, hoping his 39 plate appearances over the last two weeks — during which Kemp hit .314/.385/.486 — will be enough to get him ready for the postseason.

"If he's not ready by now, he's not going to be. I wouldn't think there would be any reason to push him back out there tomorrow," Mattingly said. "I don't think he's running at full speed. We're not going to get the 40-bags type of guy. It's just not there at this point. We're not going to be that, but he's still pretty good. He's shown he can do a lot of things."

In other resting outfielder news, both Carl Crawford and Yasiel Puig are expected to start Sunday. Crawford got a regular old day off on Saturday after starting six straight games, and Puig was begging Mattingly to play on Saturday once Kemp was scratched.

The Dodgers close out their regular season on Sunday afternoon, sending out Hyun-Jin Ryu for likely a five-inning start in the series finale against the Rockies. Jeff Francis gets the call for Colorado.

Kemp was scratched from the starting lineup just minutes before game time on Saturday night.

LOS ANGELES -- Matt Kemp was a late scratch from the starting lineup for precautionary reasons by the Dodgers on Saturday night against the Rockies with left ankle soreness, the team announced. Kemp took early batting practice and ran the bases under the scrutiny of director of medical services Stan Conte before the game, and proved healthy enough to play.

"We're going to see how BP goes, and see how he's moving in the outfield, then make a decision," manager Don Mattingly said before the Dodgers took batting practice.

Mattingly before the game, and before Kemp took outfield practice, said Kemp will be limited to pinch-hitting duty only, and likely will have to be replaced by a pinch hitter if he reaches base.

Kemp last played for the Dodgers on July 21 and was sidelined by a sprained ankle. His minor league rehab went terribly at first, as he was struggling to find his timing again at the plate. Kemp was 0-for-18 in five games with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga before moving his rehab to Camelback Ranch in Arizona, where he has batted in simulated game situations.

"I've gotten like 100 at-bats in the past week playing in Arizona," Kemp guessed.

But that rehab was slowed with tightness in his right hamstring, the same injury that caused Kemp to miss 24 games in May and June. Kemp said his hamstring feels fine now, but Mattingly was less sure. In a twist, Kemp seems ready at the plate but not in the field or on the bases.

"His swing looked really good. His running was not as good as we'd like. The straight running was really good, but as far as making a turn at second base he was really tentative," Mattingly said. "This is not really our call, it's more of a medical decision of what he can or can't do. We'll just have to see what he looks like in the outfield there a little bit, and see what we can live with."

Kemp has missed 87 of the Dodgers' 149 games this season, and has hit just .263/.319/.382 with five home runs.

"This season has been tough. It's been somewhat of a nightmare," Kemp said.."I haven't been healthy. Honestly I feel like I can help this team. These guys have been doing a great job without me. I feel like I can make this team even better, and that's all I'm trying to do, whatever role they have for me. I think I can give them four good at-bats and can do some things."

Kemp is hitting .324/.390/.622 with three home runs and 10 RBI in his last 11 games, but those 11 games have been the only games Kemp has played since May 29. But Kemp doesn't feel the need to prove his potential place on the postseason roster, which admittedly is a lock of he is ambulatory.

"I know I can make this team better than what they already are. I don't feel like I need to audition, I just need to go out there and play," Kemp said. "If they put me in the lineup I'm ready."

With Kemp's activation the Dodgers active roster has 36 players, an exceptionally high total especially for a contending team. Injuries are mostly the culprit here, as the Dodgers recalled five from Triple-A on Sept. 1 and Chris Withrow two days later.

"We didn't start with this many guys, it's just happened," Mattingly said. "It's not my favorite thing to be doing, but it's where we're at right now."

The trio of Yasiel Puig, Andre Ethier and Carl Crawford are all sitting on Sunday, all officially day-to-day but dealing with nagging injuries that may keep them out longer.

Puig has tightness in his left hip, something he dealt with in July as well. Mattingly was quite vague regarding Puig in a rather bizarre meeting with reporters before the game.

"I'm thinking somewhere between 7-10 days for him. Maybe two weeks or three, I don't know," Mattingly said. "Or it could be tomorrow."

When pressed, Mattingly said he was joking a bit, referring to his earlier predictions that injuries would be minor that end up in disabled list stints, specifically with Kemp Crawford.

"It's just what I'm feeling. I'm going with one of my feelings again," Mattingly quipped. "It's just a pretty big window for me to be right. That would be a first this year."

Mattingly did say Puig's injury wasn't serious enough to require an MRI, and it's quite possible he could return to the lineup on Monday.

"I kind of thought he would play today, but what do I know?" Mattingly said.

Kemp will participate in workouts with the team on Monday afternoon at Chase Field, and if all goes well he could be activated from the disabled list. Kemp went on the DL with a sprained ankle and compounded that with right hamstring tightness while rehabbing at Camelback Ranch in Arizona.

"We'll see him tomorrow. He'll be at the ballpark tomorrow working out early with us, running, doing the bases and doing all that," Mattingly said. "I've been told that depending on where he's at, it could be tomorrow. I don't know. Obviously we want him to be healthy."

Kemp has been hitting in simulated game situations against Dodgers minor league pitchers and has started running again as well. Sunday is an off day for him before joining the Dodgers on Monday. But just because Kemp could be activated doesn't mean he will start and be thrown in the fire right away.

"I haven't gotten that far yet," Mattingly said.

Mattingly didn't have an exact timetable for Ethier or Crawford to return but said Ethier is feeling better and guessed a few days for Crawford.

"[Carl] needs a day today for sure. We'll see," Mattingly said. "It's something we've dealt with here and there. Usually it's a day or two."

Hanley Ramirez, out with an irritated nerve in his back, is already pushing to get back into the lineup, and Mattingly said he would like to have Ramirez back as soon as possible. Though at least for Sunday, it is unlikely that Ramirez, Puig, Ethier or Crawford will be available to pinch hit.

The Dodgers center fielder, who hasn't played since July 21, hit four home runs in 10 at-bats in simulated game situations at the Dodgers' training facility at Camelback Ranch in Arizona.

LOS ANGELES -- Matt Kemp continued his rehab in Arizona on Tuesday, and Dodgers manager Don Mattingly sounded optimistic about his center fielder, telling reporters before the game with the Diamondbacks that he thinks Kemp will play again this season.

"I think everybody is pretty positive that he is on a pretty good track, as far as what he's been able to do," Mattingly said. "He's been tested without being able to run."

Kemp has been sidelined since July 21 with a sprained left ankle, but his rehab was shut down last week with tightness in his right hamstring, an aggravation of an injury that caused Kemp to miss 24 games in May and June. Mattingly said he was 6-for-10 with four home runs playing in simulated game situations at the Dodgers' facility at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz. on Tuesday.

"Right now it's pretty positive," Mattingly said. "I could use him to pinch hit, but then I'd have to pinch run for him. It would be nice if he could run."

But Mattingly has been optimistic plenty of times this season to no avail, notably predicting no disabled list time for before all three of Kemp's DL stints this season. But this situation is different, as Mattingly has discussed Kemp with the medical staff and has had time to process the information, unlike the immediacy of a postgame media session.

"I'm telling you what [the training staff] told me," Mattingly said. "If you ask me like 20 minutes after he gets hurt, he'll be great. What do you want me to say? You want an answer that I don't have an answer for."

Mattingly reiterated that Kemp hasn't resumed running and is still likely a week or so away from returning to the Dodgers. But Mattingly was optimistic that Kemp would be able to return for some regular season games in preparation for the postseason.

"I don't know if I have a minimum [games Kemp needs to play]," Mattingly said. "It's hard to judge off two (simulated) games. It would be nice to be able to see 10-12 games."

The Dodgers end their regular season on Sunday, Sept. 29 at home against the Rockies. They have 18 regular season games remaining after Tuesday night.

Kemp, who last played on July 21, has played in 11 of the Dodgers' last 88 games.

The planned comeback of Matt Kemp has taken a turn for the worse, as the Dodgers center fielder felt tightness in his right hamstring, the team announced Friday. While the Dodgers announced Kemp's rehab would be slowed down, manager Don Mattingly said Kemp would be shut down "indefinitely," per Dodger Talk co-host David Vassesgh.

Kemp has been sidelined since July 21 with a sprained left ankle, but also missed 24 games on a separate disabled list stint in May and June with a right hamstring strain.

Kemp has been rehabbing at the Dodgers' complex at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz., playing in simulated games against Dodgers pitchers whose minor league seasons have ended, like Matt Magill and Onelki Garcia, for instance.

"I'm not ready to concede anything, but at some point we run out of time," manager Don Mattingly told reporters before Friday's game against the Reds in Cincinnati, per Vassegh.

Kemp began his current rehab assignment with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga, and went 0-for-18 in the final five games of the Quakes' regular season. He moved his rehab to Arizona on Tuesday, still trying to find his timing at the plate.

Kemp has played in 11 games and has 41 major league plate appearances since May 30.

The Dodgers have had outfielders Carl Crawford, Andre Ethier, Yasiel Puig and Kemp healthy and active for a total of two games and 10 innings this season.
