Volquez on Wednesday will make his first start since Aug. 23, when he retired just two of the 11 hitters he faced and allowed six runs in less than an inning against the Cubs at Petco Park.

The Dodgers have decided to use their new acquisition, as Edinson Volquez will start the series finale against the Rockies on Wednesday night at Coors Field, per pick your beat reporter: Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, David Vassegh of KLAC 570, Tony Jackson, or Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.

Hyun-jin Ryu was slated to start Wednesday in Denver, but with the start for Volquez and Thursday's day off, will likely start Friday's opener in Cincinnati against the Reds, on six days rest. The Reds' top three offensive players are left-handed (or three of their top four, depending on how you feel about Jay Bruce vs. the right-handed Brandon Phillips), so saving the southpaw Ryu, especially rested, makes some sense.

Capuano, who allowed one run in seven innings in a win on Saturday, will be skipped and will next start on Tuesday, Sept. 10 in Arizona, per Mark Saxon of ESPN LA. Capuano is 4-7 with a 4.50 ERA this season in 21 games, including 19 starts.

That means Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw will start the final two games over the weekend in Cincinnati, in what could potentially be a playoff preview. Kershaw will oppose Homer Bailey on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball, a rematch of a September 2012 game fondly remembered by Adrian Gonzalez.

Volquez was signed on Friday by the Dodgers, less than a week after he was released by the Padres after he put up a 6.01 ERA in 27 starts with San Diego. Manager Don Mattingly said he wanted to get Volquez out on the mound first just to get his feet wet with a new organization, and did so in relief in a blowout win on Friday night.

Volquez allowed a double in his one inning of work but stranded the runner. He threw a bullpen session on Sunday, presumably in preparation of this start.

In his career Volquez is 1-4 with an 8.39 ERA in seven career starts in Denver, including allowing 21 runs on 29 hits and six walks in 12⅔ innings in three starts this season.

After starting the season 9-23 against the National League West, the Dodgers are now 27-27 within the division.

Clayton Kershaw had his worst start of the season and Yasiel Puig left early with a right knee strain, but the Dodgers managed to overcome that for a 10-8 victory over the Rockies at Coors Field for their fifth straight win.

The Dodgers are the first team since the 1954 Indians to have a 52-13 stretch.

Andre Ethier doubled and scored in the third inning for the Dodgers, then hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning. The Dodgers scored three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to take control of the game.

But Ethier wasn't done, as he doubled in the ninth inning, becoming the first Dodger ever with seven seasons of 30 or more doubles. Ethier has done so consecutively.

It was all to convenient to assume Kershaw's last start counted as a down one, as he allowed two runs, only one earned, in 5⅔ innings. But Kershaw on Monday reminded us all what a bad start looked like.

He struggled from the start, allowing three runs in the first inning, and even after the Dodgers clawed back for a 5-3 lead, Kershaw gave both runs back in the fifth inning for a tie game. Kershaw was pulled after just five innings and 81 pitches for his shortest start of the season.

Kershaw allowed a season-high-tying five runs and allowed a career-high 11 hits. He has allowed double-digit hits just one other time in his career, when he allowed 10 hits in a start on July 22, 2008, when he also allowed five runs at Coors Field.

But since baseball is often weird, Kershaw was able to get the win on Monday, thanks to a three-run rally in the sixth inning.

It wasn't all bad on Monday for Kershaw, as he was 2-for-2 at the plate, including a two-run single that briefly gave the Dodgers a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning. That gave Kershaw 10 runs batted in on the season, most in MLB, and the most by a Dodgers pitcher since Randy Wolf drove in 11 in 2009.

Kershaw also got his 200th strikeout of the season, his fourth straight year doing so, and finished with a National League-best 201 strikeouts. And even with the five runs allowed in his five innings, Kershaw's major league-best ERA ballooned ... all the way to 1.89.

Magic number

Coupled with Arizona's 4-1 loss to Toronto, the Dodgers' magic number to clinch the NL West is 14.

After relievers Brandon League pitched a scoreless sixth and Brian Wilson pitched a scoreless seventh, the Rockies tacked on two runs in the eighth against Ronald Belisario and were threatening for more. But a ground ball to third from Michael Cuddyer produced a 5-4-3 to end the inning and the threat.

The Dodgers picked up some insurance with two runs in the ninth inning, thanks to Juan Uribe's second RBI single of the game and a run-scoring ground-rule double by Carl Crawford.

Kenley Jansen allowed a leadoff home run to Wilin Rosario in the ninth inning to cut the Dodgers' lead to two runs, and the Rockies brought the tying run to the plate, but Jansen recovered to record the final three outs to close out the win, converting his 18th straight save opportunity. Jansen tied his career high with his 25th save.

Michael Young made his Dodgers debut as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning, but he struck out on a check swing in the eyes of first base umpire Manny Gonzalez.

Up next

The Dodgers go for a sixth straight win on Tuesday with perhaps their hottest pitcher on the mound. Ricky Nolasco and his 16 consecutive scoreless innings take the hill for Los Angeles, facing off against Jhoulys Chacin for the Rockies.

Monday particulars

No other player in the 130-year history of the Dodgers has has more than six seasons of 30 or more doubles, and Ethier has done it in seven consecutive seasons.

With a double in the ninth inning against Matt Belisle of the Rockies on Monday afternoon, Andre Ethier made Dodgers history. The outfielder became the first player in franchise history with seven seasons of 30 or more doubles.

Ethier has two doubles and a home run on Monday.

Ethier is also the first Dodger with seven consecutive seasons of 30 or more doubles, just as he was the first Dodger with six consecutive years of 30 doubles. Ethier's seven seasons of 30 doubles surpassed a quartet of Dodgers with six 30-double campaigns: Steve Garvey (1974-76, 1978-79, 1982), Dixie Walker (1940-41, 1943-45, 1947) and Hall of Famers Zack Wheat (1910, 1916, 1921, 1924-26) and Jackie Robinson (1947-1951, 1953).

With 261 doubles in his career, Ethier is 13th on the all-time franchise list but fifth since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958.

Ethier's 261 doubles are the most by any Dodger in their first eight (or nine seasons), surpassing Jackie Robinson (252). Since the beginning of his career, Ethier has the 17th-most doubles in MLB.

His 241 doubles from 2007-2013 are the most ever by a Dodger in any seven-year span, more than Dixie Walker's 237 from 1940-1946, more than Jackie Robinson (230, 1947-53), Steve Garvey (227, 1974-80) and Duke Snider (226, 1950-56). It should be noted that Babe Herman has 231 doubles in six seasons (1926-1931), but was traded to the Reds before the 1932 season.

Ethier's 1,148 career hits rank ninth in Los Angeles Dodgers history, behind Davey Lopes (1,204 hits) for eighth place.

The Dodgers outfielder has played in 80 of 82 games since joining the Dodgers, including 76 starts. He won't start on Tuesday after hurting his right knee.

Yasiel Puig was removed from Monday's game against the Rockies in the sixth inning, after the Dodgers outfielder appeared to have some sort of an issue with his knee. The Dodgers announced that Puig left the game with a mild right knee strain.

Puig reached first base on a throwing error by third baseman Nolan Arenado to open the sixth inning, then advanced to third base on a single to right field by Adrian Gonzalez. But Puig appeared to over-slide the bag at third base and remained on the ground on his knees for a moment. He appeared to be shaken up a bit and in talking to third base coach Tim Wallach pointed to his knee.

The injury may have occurred for Puig while at first on a pickoff attempt by Rockies pitcher Jeff Manship. Replays on the KCAL television broadcast showed Puig appearing to tweak his knee while getting back to the bag.

Puig later scored with ease on a sacrifice fly to center field by Hanley Ramirez to give the Dodgers a 6-5 lead, but was walking slowly back to the dugout.

Skip Schumaker replaced Puig in right field to start the bottom of the sixth inning.

Puig had problems at Coors Field two months ago, when he ran into the right field wall and had to leave the game on July 3.

After the game, manager Don Mattingly said Puig had stiffness in his knee and that the outfielder wouldn't start on Tuesday, per Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. Puig said the knee has been an ongoing issue but today felt worse, per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.

The inevitable comparisons between two great Dodgers southpaws continue, especially after Kershaw accomplished something not done since Koufax.

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw struck out Wilin Rosario of the Rockies in the third inning on Monday at Coors Field, marking another notch in the Dodgers' record book. Kershaw reached 200 strikeouts on the season, making him the first Dodgers pitcher since Sandy Koufax 47 years ago with 200 or more strikeouts in four consecutive seasons.

There have only been three Dodgers pitchers to achieve 200 strikeouts in at least four consecutive seasons. Koufax did it in six straight seasons (1961-1966), Don Drysdale accomplished the feat from 1962-1965, and Kershaw has done it in the last four seasons.

Koufax and Drysdale lead the Dodgers franchise history with six total seasons of 200 or more strikeouts. Don Sutton is next with five seasons, followed by Kershaw's four campaigns. No other Dodgers pitcher has had more than three such seasons.

Kershaw leads the National League in strikeouts, nine more than the shut-down Matt Harvey of the Mets and 13 more than Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals.

In 2011 Kershaw led the NL with 248 strikeouts en route to winning the Cy Young Award. In 2012 Kershaw finished one strikeout behind R.A. Dickey for the league lead and was the runner-up to the then-Mets right-hander in Cy Young balloting.

Kershaw now has 137 strikeouts (and counting) in his career against the Rockies, second only to the Giants (149 strikeouts) for his most against any team.

With 889 strikeouts since the start of 2010, Kershaw has the most by a Dodger in a four-year span since Koufax fanned 1,228 batters from 1963-1966.

Clayton Kershaw gets the start for the Dodgers, his first start at Coors Field since his complete game shutout on July 2. Beginning with that start, Kershaw has allowed 13 runs (11 earned runs) in his last 11 starts, with a 1.20 ERA, 79 strikeouts and 13 walks in 82⅔ innings.

Kershaw has lasted at least seven innings in his three starts at Coors Field since the beginning of 2012, with a 3.09 ERA during that span. He did allow five runs, including a career-high three home runs (since tied) in a no-decision in Denver on May 2, 2002.

Notes

The Dodgers are 51-13 in their last 64 games, their hottest stretch of this length in franchise history. The only other teams to do that in the last 69 years are the 1954 Indians and 2001 Mariners. The last team do have a better stretch of that length was the 1944 Cardinals, with a 52-12 run. The last team to have a 52-13 stretch was those 1954 Indians.

The Dodgers' 11½-game lead in the National League West is their largest since having the same lead at the end of play on Sept. 20, 1977.

Todd Helton on Sunday became the 96th player in major league history with 2,500 hits. Per Elias he is the eighth player to begin his career since 1950, play for one franchise and have 2,500 hits. The others were George Brett (3,154 hits), Robin Yount (3,142), Cal Ripken Jr. (3,184), Tony Gwynn (3,141), Craig Biggio (3,060), Chipper Jones (2,726) and Derek Jeter (3,311 hits entering Monday).
