The Dodgers lost their third straight game for the first time since June 8-10.

Saturday afternoon began by celebrating the illustrious career of Joe Morgan, and it ended in another celebration. In the bottom of the 10th inning, secret weapon Billy Hamilton came off the bench and swiped second. Todd Frazier delivered the dagger on his walk-off RBI single, giving the Reds the 4-3 win.

With Zack Greinke and Mat Latos on the bump, runs were supposed to be at a premium. Instead, the Dodgers and Reds combined to score five runs through two frames.

Hanley Ramirez started the surprising hit party with a RBI single. Michael Young failed to get anyone home with the basses full of blue and one out. Despite two walks and two hits, the Dodgers only got one run in the first inning, stranding two in scoring position.

The Reds didn't take long to respond, tacking on two runs in the home half of the first via four consecutive singles. Jay Bruce knotted the game up at one with a RBI single. The recently returned Ryan Ludwick gave Cincinnati the 2-1 advantage on a RBI single.

Puig approached the dish in the second with A.J. Ellis on third and two outs. Latos and Puig battled it out for seven pitches, as the Cuban sensation added another highlight to his impressive resume. Puig took Latos deep and put Los Angeles back in control at 3-2, going 1-for-4 on the day with two RBI.

For the remainder of the contest, Greinke and Latos went back-and-forth by posting zeroes. Both starters couldn't avoid high pitch counts, shortening their outings significantly. Greinke's final line ended up being six inning, two runs and fanned nine. Latos also didn't bring his A-game, yet still posted a quality start of seven innings, three runs and three strikeouts.

Manager Don Mattingly may feel the like their fourth inning base running error cost them. Adrian Gonzalez singled to right and third base coach Tim Wallach held up Greinke at third. Meanwhile, Carl Crawford wasn't aware and rounded second too far, causing Greinke to sacrifice himself for the third out.

Greinke almost lost the lead in the fifth by loading the bases with a mere out. The National League's RBI leader since 2012, Bruce, couldn't convert on the opportunity. Bruce chased on high cheddar and Ludwick proceeded to also strikeout to retire the side.

"It took a while, but Zack Greinke gets through the fifth and holds onto the 3-2 lead." Fox play-by-play announcer Rich Waltz said.

J.P. Howell cost the Dodgers the win Friday, but he bounced back well. The veteran left-hander escaped a ninth inning jam with runners on first and second and one out.

The usually reliable Pacco Rodriguez didn't take care of business, as Cesar Izturis tied the game up at three on a RBI double. The former blue crew member came into Saturday batting under the Mendoza line, but Izturis went 3-for-4 and played a key role in the Reds win.

Brian Wilson was responsible for the loss on Frazier's walk off single.

Up next

The Dodgers try to avoid the sweep with ace Clayton Kershaw on the mound. Dusty Baker turns to the no-hit machine Homer Bailey.

The Dodgers' right-hander on Saturday will try to be the first Dodgers starter to win seven straight starts in a decade.

After watching their starting pitcher Friday night last just five outs, the Dodgers will turn to their top two starters to pick up the bullpen in the final two games against the Reds. Zack Greinke gets the call for the Dodgers on Saturday morning in the middle game of the series at Great American Ball Park.

The Dodgers have lost their last two games, but they haven't lost three straight since June 8-10 against the Braves (two games) and Diamondbacks (one game) at home.

Greinke has won each of his last six starts and the Dodgers are undefeated in his last seven starts, as the right-hander hasn't allowed more than two runs in any start since July 25, his last defeat. That loss was to the Reds, who scored four times in seven innings against Greinke.

But even with that start included Greinke has allowed 13 total runs in his last 11 starts, with a 1.47 ERA and an 8-1 record. The Dodgers are 19-4 in his starts this season.

The last Dodgers pitcher to win seven consecutive starts was Kevin Brown from May 14 to June 17, 2003.

That loss by Greinke on July 25 came at the hands of Mat Latos, who has pitched quite well against the Dodgers in his career. Latos pitched into the eighth inning on July 25 and allowed just one run, and has allowed more than two earned runs just twice in 10 career starts against Los Angeles.

Latos has a 2.32 career ERA against the Dodgers with 59 strikeouts in 62 innings, but the good news for the Dodgers is that they have won six of his 10 starts against them.

Skip Schumaker is 5-for-11 (.455) with a double against Latos and gets the start at second base on Saturday. Juan Uribe is 4-for-19 (.211) with a double against Latos and sits in favor of Michael Young, who hasn't yet faced Latos.

Brandon Phillips sits for the Reds, with old friend Cesar Izturis getting the call at second base for Cincinnati. Izturis is hitting .178/.236/.220 this season in 56 games.

The Dodgers won three of four games against the Reds in July at Dodger Stadium. The two teams meet again in Cincinnati in a possible playoff preview this weekend.

The Dodgers will conclude their road trip this weekend in Cincinnati, as their last series outside of the National League West is against an old divisional opponent in the Reds. Here is a look at the television schedule and pitching matchups for the three games at Great American Ball Park.

Friday, 4:10 p.m. (Prime Ticket)

Hyun-jin Ryu was originally scheduled to start the series finale in Denver on Wednesday, then was pushed back to Friday in Cincinnati once Edinson Volquez was slotted in to stretch out the starting rotation. But mild back stiffness will keep Ryu out Friday against the Reds, and instead the Dodgers will turn in the series opener to Chris Capuano, who had a nice bounce back start on Saturday against the Padres. Capuano allowed one run in seven innings with seven strikeouts and just one walk. He has zero or one walk in 12 of his last 13 starts; in the other start, Capuano walked two.

Mike Leake has allowed at least four runs in each of his last four starts, and since the beginning of August is 1-2 with a 7.22 ERA in six starts, with 28 runs, 44 hits and 10 walks allowed in 33⅔ innings.

Friday's game is the 47th and final game called by Eric Collins and Steve Lyons this season. The Dodgers are 29-17 (.630) in the first 46.

Saturday, 10:05 a.m. (Fox)

The National League Pitcher of the Month in August, Zack Greinke began his September with seven strong innings of one-run ball against the Padres on Sunday. Greinke has won his last six starts and has allowed six total runs during that span. Mat Latos has pitched seven quality starts in his last eight outings, including a complete game victory over the Cardinals on Monday. Latos is 5-2 with a 1.83 ERA in those eight starts, including 40 strikeouts and 10 walks in 59 innings.

Sunday, 5:05 p.m. (ESPN)

Clayton Kershaw has looked mortal in his last two starts with seven runs and 18 hits allowed in 10⅔ innings. He struck out eight in eight innings in a win over the Reds on July 26 at Dodger Stadium. Homer Bailey allowed just two runs in seven innings in that game in Los Angeles but got hung with the loss. Since that game Bailey is 5-0 with a 2.42 ERA in seven starts.

Kershaw also beat Bailey in their other career matchup, on Sept. 23, 2012, which also came on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.
