The Dodgers are 36-36 against the National League West this season, including 20-17 on the road.

For Ricky Nolasco the third time was not the charm on Wednesday night. He struggled again, and old friend Tony Abreu knocked in four runs to lead the Giants over the Dodgers 6-4 in the middle game of a three-game series at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

After a pinch double by Adrian Gonzalez, Hanley Ramirez came to the plate with two outs in the ninth inning representing the tying run. But Ramirez, who was 2-for-4 with two home runs as a Dodger against Giants closer Sergio Romo, was robbed of a base hit by a diving play by Nick Noonan at third base to end the game.

The Giants loaded the bases against Nolasco with nobody out in the second inning. After Brandon Crawford struck out, former Dodgers infielder Tony Abreu tripled off the glove of Yasiel Puig in right field for a 3-0 Giants lead.

Barry Zito retired the first nine Dodgers on the night, but before the name Billy Chapel could be heard Zito had trouble with the second time through the order. After Puig and Carl Crawford singled to open the fourth inning, Matt Kemp lined a ball off the top of the left field wall. He just missed a game-tying three-run home run but settled for an RBI double.

Jerry Hairston grounded a ball under the glove of shortstop Brandon Crawford to give the Dodgers one of those runs, but Kemp was stranded and the Dodgers trailed 3-2.

San Francisco answered back in the bottom of the fourth, when Buster Posey singled and Pablo Sandoval followed with a fly ball to left field that, unlike Kemp's ball, found its way over the fence. The opposite-field two-run home run put the Dodgers behind 5-2.

Abreu later added a pop fly double in the sixth inning to drive in a run, another ball Puig nearly caught, this time on a diving attempt. Abreu not only drove in a career-high four runs, but he has homered, tripled and doubled so far in the two-game series. Abreu has at least one extra-base hit in three straight games, his longest streak since four straight games in 2007 with the Dodgers, in his second week in the majors.

The start was the third consecutive bad start for Nolasco, who allowed six runs in his 5⅔ innings, though he did strikeout seven with just one walk. Nolasco has allowed 17 earned runs in 12 innings in his last three starts, after allowing 17 earned runs in 74 innings in his first 12 starts as a Dodger.

Notes

Kemp drove in two runs and was 3-for-4 on Thursday. Since is activation from the disabled list Kemp is 11-for-28 (.393) with three doubles and a home run in nine games.

Crawford was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, his second straight multi-hit game. One of Crawford's hits was a double, giving him a fourth season with 30 or more doubles.

J.P. Howell struck out just three of his previous 29 batters entering Wednesday night, over eight innings. But he struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh inning, giving him 54 in 61⅓ innings this season.

Dodgers pitchers struck out 12 on the night, giving them 41 games with double-digit strikeouts this season, third-most in the National League.

For those interested in handicapping the NLDS roster, Dee Gordon pinch hit for Hairston (0-for-19 slump) to lead off the ninth inning. Gordon popped out to catcher.

Up next

The Dodgers go for the series win on Thursday night with Edinson Volquez on the mound. Tim Lincecum starts the series finale for the Giants.

Wednesday particulars

An injured ankle has kept Ethier out of the starting lineup every game since Sept. 13.

The Dodgers got bad news on Wednesday as outfielder Andre Ethier was sent back to Los Angeles to meet with team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache for more tests on his ankle, manager Don Mattingly told reporters before their game against the Giants, per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times.

Ethier had both an MRI exam and CT scan, which showed his left ankle is improved but not healed, the Dodgers announced during the game. Ethier will be cleared to play once he is able to run the bases without pain.

Mattingly expressed concern that Ethier wouldn't be available for the NLDS, per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. "Yeah, I'm a little worried about him," Mattingly said, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.

Ethier pinch hit on Sunday in San Diego but that is his only game played since Sept. 13. Wednesday night marks the 11th straight game Ethier is out of the starting lineup, dealing with a sore ankle.

He was originally thought to be ready to play during the series in San Francisco, but before Tuesday's opener suffered a setback while running the bases.

Ethier is hitting .272/.360/.423 in 142 games this season, including .278/.382/.503 with seven of his 12 home runs in 51 games since the All-Star break. He has started 70 games in center field this season in addition to 50 starts in right field and seven more in left.

The NLDS opens on Oct. 3, but the postseason rosters are set before each round. If Ethier is unavailable for the opening round it doesn't prevent him from playing in the NLCS or World Series if he is healthy and should the Dodgers advance that far.

If Ethier is in fact left off the NLDS roster, it gives the Dodgers a little more flexibility and at the very least improves the chances of Scott Van Slyke to make the roster. With Ethier healthy, the prevailing thought is that the final position player spot on the roster is essentially between Jerry Hairston, Dee Gordon and Van Slyke. But with Ethier unavailable the Dodgers can keep two of those players should they so choose.

If Ethier is unable to play in any of these final five regular season games, the Dodgers will have had four healthy outfielders (Ethier, Matt Kemp, Carl Crawford and Yasiel Puig) for all of two games this season (July 5 and July 21), and for a total of 10 innings.

The entire Dodgers starting infield gets a rest on Wednesday night against Barry Zito and the Giants.

The Dodgers face long odds to have home field advantage in the National League Division Series, and their lineup on Wednesday night against the Giants in San Francisco reflects a team that knows it. Four regulars get the night off in the middle game of the three-game series at AT&T Park.

Hanley Ramirez, Adrian Gonzalez, Mark Ellis and Juan Uribe all sit, and it's not much of a surprise as manager Don Mattingly said over the weekend in San Diego that he would continue to rest his regulars in the final week in an effort to keep them rested and refreshed for October. It doesn't hurt that Ramirez, Ellis and Uribe have the Dodgers' three worst OPS against Giants starter Barry Zito among players with at least 15 plate appearances.

Michael Young starts at first base, batting cleanup, his eighth start in 22 games since joining the Dodgers. Jerry Hairston, mired in an 0-for-16 slump and hitting just .214/.268/.289 on the season, starts at third base, while Skip Schumaker gets the call at second and Nick Punto at shortstop.

The Dodgers are two games behind both the Braves and Cardinals for home field advantage in a potential playoff matchup, but time is running out. For the Dodgers to have home field advantage against the Cardinals they need six of eight outcomes to go their way. For the Dodgers to host the Braves they would need eight of 10 possible outcomes to fall in their favor.

Zito has allowed 42 runs and 14 home runs in his last 42 innings, and hasn't pitched since Sept. 2.

As the Dodgers face the Giants on Wednesday night in San Francisco, they will battle a pitcher in his final outing with the rivals. Barry Zito starts the middle game of the three-game series at AT&T Park, in his first appearance in 23 days.

While the temptation is strong to go grave dancing over the seven-year, $126 million contract signed by Zito that was a joke the moment it was signed, it hasn't exactly hampered the Giants' ability to win in recent years. The LOLs are few and far between given that San Francisco won two of the last three World Series, and Zito was 2-0 with a 1.69 in three postseason starts for the Giants last season.

But on the whole Zito has been a bad pitcher with the Giants for his seven years. He is 62-80 with a 4.63 ERA, an 86 ERA+ in 206 games, including 196 starts with San Francisco. Among the 127 pitchers to start at least 100 games in the last seven seasons, Zito's 86 ERA+ is tied for 10th worst, with Nick Blackburn.

Zito's 2013 season has been his worst, at 4-11 with a 5.91 ERA, a 57 ERA+ in 28 games, including 24 starts. Opposing hitters have hit .323/.389/.500 in 587 plate appearances, a 158 OPS+ that if concentrated into a single player would rank third in the National League, behind only MVP candidates Paul Goldschmidt (163) and Andrew McCutchen (159).

He has allowed 42 runs and 14 home runs in his last 42 innings, and the Giants have lost 11 of those 13 appearances. He has allowed 75 runs in his last 88⅔ innings, dating back to May 14.

Zito in his career is 9-10 with a 3.65 ERA in 27 games, including 26 starts, against the Dodgers. But in the last four seasons, when Zito on the whole has a 4.77 ERA, a 77 ERA+, he has a 2.81 ERA against Los Angeles. He has allowed one or zero run in five of his last six starts against the Dodgers at AT&T Park.

Doyle Alexander, drafted by the Dodgers in 1968, was traded in his career for both Frank Robinson and John Smoltz. What does Ricky Nolasco, traded for both Juan Pierre and Steve Ames, have in common with Alexander?

The Dodgers go for their fourth straight win on Wednesday night in San Francisco, and will send Ricky Nolasco to the mound against the Giants in the second game of the series.

When Nolasco was acquired from the Marlins on July 6 I joked in the comments that he would match Doyle Alexander's 1987 production for the Tigers. Detroit acquired the 36-year-old Alexander for the stretch run 26 years ago, and though everyone remembers that future Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz, then 20 years old, went the other way in the deal, Alexander gave the Tigers everything they needed.

Alexander was 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA in 11 starts for the Tigers, and Detroit won all 11 games he took the mound. Those were much needed wins for the Tigers, who won the American League East over the Blue Jays on the final day of the season with a win over Toronto.

The one caveat for Alexander is that, for as great as he was to get Detroit to the playoffs, he was a disaster in the ALCS against the Twins. He pitched into the eighth inning in Game 1 but allowed six runs in an 8-5 loss at the Metrodome. Five days later Alexander recorded just five outs but gave up four more runs as the Twins closed out the Tigers in Game 5 in Detroit.

Nolasco in his first 12 starts with the Dodgers was 8-1 with a 2.07 ERA, shattering every expectation of him at the time of the trade. He had 62 strikeouts and just 17 walks in 74 innings, and made a strong push to be the Dodgers' No. 3 starter come October, taking nothing away from the season-long contributions of Hyun-jin Ryu.

More: Dodgers acquire Nolasco Nolasco paying huge dividends SF scores 19 in LA

But the last two starts for Nolasco have not been good. At all.

On Sept. 14 against the Giants at Dodger Stadium, Nolasco was tagged for seven runs (five earned) while recording just four outs, as San Francisco set a Dodger Stadium record with 19 runs scored. Last Thursday in Phoenix with a chance to close out the division, Nolasco was staked to a 3-0 lead but had a disastrous third inning that saw the Diamondbacks score six runs on seven hits.

In his last two starts Nolasco has given up 11 earned runs in 6⅓ innings, matching his total allowed in his previous nine starts combined, covering 51⅔ innings.

Was Nolasco simply taking the Doyle Alexander comparison to its conclusion with those two bad starts?

The good news is that there is plenty of time for Nolasco to turn things around. After his final regular season start on Wednesday, it could be a while before Nolasco pitches again. If he is the Game 4 starter for the Dodgers, he wouldn't start again until Monday, Oct. 7 at the earliest, 12 days from now.

But first things first for Nolasco, who first has the Giants to tackle on Wednesday night. In his career at AT&T Park he is 4-0 with a 1.47 ERA in five starts. This is his first start in San Francisco as a Dodger.

Notes

Dodgers starting pitchers have allowed three runs (two earned) in the last four games, with 25 strikeouts and eight walks in 25⅓ innings.

Dodgers starters have a 3.35 ERA in seven starts at AT&T Park this season. Dodgers starters not named Matt Magill have a 2.31 ERA in six starts in San Francisco.

No Clayton Kershaw, no Zack Greinke, but it's still Dodgers vs. Giants for three games at Kevin Elster Field at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

The Dodgers close out the road portion of their schedule on Tuesday as they open a three-game series against the Giants at AT&T Park. Here is a quick look at the television schedule and starting pitchers this week in San Francisco (all times PT).

Tuesday, 7:15 p.m. (KCAL)

Hyun-Jin Ryu has a 3.03 ERA through his first 28 starts. If he is able to lower it a few clicks in his final one or two starts the Dodgers will have three pitchers with enough innings to qualify for the ERA title with an ERA under 3.00 since 1988, when Orel Hershiser, Tim Leary and Tim Belcher did the honors. Since returning from the disabled list, Matt Cain has allowed just five runs, three earned runs, in three starts.

Wednesday, 7:15 p.m. (KCAL, ESPN)

Ricky Nolasco allowed just six doubles, one home run and 10 runs in 46 innings over seven starts from Aug. 7 to Sept. 9, but in his last two starts has allowed five doubles, a triple and 13 runs in 5⅓ innings. Madison Bumgarner is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in September, with 31 strikeouts and seven walks in 25 innings, over four starts.

Thursday, 7:15 p.m. (Prime Ticket)

Since the predictably bad start in Coors Field on Sept. 4, Edinson Volquez has a 3.50 ERA with 18 strikeouts and five walks in 18 innings. Tim Lincecum is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA against the Dodgers this season in three starts, but Los Angeles batters have hit .281/.382/.375 this season against him.
