LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers think highly of shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena, enough to sign him to a five-year $25 million contract essentially on defense alone, hoping his bat would eventually develop. He has already made his major league debut, and even started four games at shortstop when Hanley Ramirez dealt with a lower leg injury.

But now Arruebarrena, 24, finds himself sitting on the Dodgers bench, just 2½ months after entering the country, rather than playing every day in the minor leagues.

"You have to think about his development also as a player," manager Don Mattingly said Sunday. "We feel like this guy is going to be a big league player and a big league shortstop. You just can't leave him sitting here."

That was Mattingly's answer to a question of whether or not Arruebarrena would remain on the major league roster once Juan Uribe returns from the disabled list, the latter a proposition that at least a week away, maybe more, as the Dodgers play it cautious with Uribe's strained hamstring.

But the answer is just as relevant to the question of where Arruebarrena should be playing now, as it is two weeks from now. Arruebarrena hasn't started in six games, and he hasn't played in five, limited only to a two-inning stint as a replacement on defense last Tuesday. To be fair, Arreubarrena almost certainly would have played the final four innings Saturday with a 10-run lead, but he was unavailable with the flu.

The point stands, that Arruebarrena's playing time is nearly nonexistent right now. He has taken ground balls at second base and third base, but Mattingly said he has no plans to start Arruebarrena at those positions; he just wants Arruebarrena ready in case he's needed in an emergency.

Arruebarrena's roster spot is essentially the infielder buried on the bench, a part Carlos Triunfel was born to play. Triunfel is hitting only .208/.253/.264 with Triple-A Albuquerque but has played shortstop, second and third with the Isotopes and could fill in when needed at the frequency we've seen over the last week, at least until Uribe is back.

Major league need for the most part usually trumps minor league development, but if we're at a point where Arruebarrena isn't going to play one has to wonder what he gains by even being on the roster.

"I think a guy can learn here and gain ground just by being around and being able to work with the guys and playing a little bit," Mattingly said. "But at some point he's going to need to keep playing."

Arruebarrena got the call over Triunfel because of his defensive value and the need to give Ramirez a rest at shortstop. That happened, and with Ramirez back playing every day, it's probably time to send Arruebarrena back down to continue his development.

There was cheering in the ninth inning at Dodger Stadium, but it was for the Kings winning Game 7 of the Western Conference Final.

LOS ANGELES -- Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez combined to spell doom for the Dodgers, who couldn't score more than two runs against Edinson Volquez in a 5-3 loss to the Pirates on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium.

Zack Greinke battled in the first inning, mostly with the strike zone. He threw 27 pitches, just 13 for strikes, and one of those strikes was nearly hit out of the park by Andrew McCutchen, who settled for a two-out double off the wall. Greinke then walked Ike Davis and Russell Martin to load the bases for Pedro Alvarez.

The Dodgers shifted the infield playing the left-handed Alvarez to pull, but he grounded a fastball away through the vacated hole at shortstop for a two-run single.

"I like the shift, for the most part," Greinke said. "If you look at Alvarez, if you throw the ball a couple inches off the plate away, he still pulls the ball for the most part. A lot of times you shift guys when they do that, no matter what. I'm a big fan of the shift, when it goes by what the data shows."

The Dodgers got on the board in the second inning when Matt Kemp drove a ball down the right field line for a ground rule double, then scored on a single to center field by Justin Turner.

McCutchen his next time up made sure he didn't have to settle, hitting one well over the fence in right center field in the third inning for his fifth home run of the season, for a 3-1 Pirates lead.

"The key was McCutchen pretty much got three runs on his own," Greinke said. "He was tough to stop."

Turner continued his hot hitting in the fourth inning, drilling a ball to left center field for his third home run of the year to pull the Dodgers within 3-2. Turner began the year with no home runs and four doubles in his first 30 games, hitting .218. In his nine games since, Turner is 11-for-29 (.379) with three home runs, three doubles and seven runs batted in.

Turner has scored at least one run in each of his last eight starts, the longest streak by a Dodger this season, and the longest since Yaseil Puig had an eight-game streak from June 27 to July 5 last year.

In the sixth inning McCutchen drilled a double down the left field line, then advanced to third on a fly ball to left center when Kemp hesitated with his throw to third. He scored on another single by Alvarez, giving the Bucs a 4-2 advantage.

"The first pitch I threw, the double off the wall, was a bad pitch," Greinke recalled. "In his third at-bat I threw my best ground ball pitch just because I wanted to keep it from getting in the air, and he put it in the air still. He just had my number today."

For good measure, McCutchen even robbed Drew Butera of a hit with a great sliding catch in shallow center in the seventh inning.

Chris Perez relieved Greinke in the seventh inning and with one out nearly gave up a Loge-level shot down the left field line to Josh Harrison, but it was just foul. The next pitch from Perez, however, was hit quite fair, this time over the wall in right center field for a 5-2 Pirates lead.

Perez has allowed four home runs this season, most by a Dodgers reliever, and all have come in his last six outings.

"[Perez] threw the ball really good early [in the season]. We feel like he'll get back to that," said manager Don Mattingly. "The velocity is there, it's just a matter of getting the ball where he needed to get it to. To me, he threw the ball well tonight except for that one pitch. He bounced back. We still feel like his stuff is good."

Perez also struck out McCutchen on three pitches. Baseball.

Two walks and an RBI single by Scott Van Slyke brought the Dodgers to within 5-3 and put the tying runs on base with two outs against Jason Grilli, but Dee Gordon lined out to end the game.

Notes

Puig doubled and singled in four trips to the plate, extending his streak of reaching base to 33 straight games, tied with Mike Napoli for the second-longest streak in baseball this season.

McCutchen is the third player to have three extra-base hits in a game at Dodger Stadium this year, joining Hanley Ramirez (April 6) and Carlos Ruiz (April 21).

Kemp struck out against Pirates reliever Justin Wilson in the sixth inning, extending his slump against left-handers to 0-for-17. On the season against southpaws, Kemp is 8-for-56 (.143).

Butera threw out Ike Davis trying to steal second base in the eighth inning. In three games behind the plate in the series against the Pirates, Butera threw out all three runners trying to steal second base and picked off another.

Up next

The Dodgers welcome the White Sox to town for three games starting Monday night. Clayton Kershaw starts the opener for the Dodgers, with Jose Quintana starting for Chicago in a battle of southpaws. A pair of old friends in the White Sox bullpen are excited for the trip to Los Angeles to see their former teammates.

LOS ANGELES -- Chad Billingsley will throw another simulated game on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium and if that goes well he will likely start a minor league rehab assignment by next weekend. The right-hander threw 30 pitches in a two-inning simulated game on Thursday.

Billingsley started a rehab assignment in April, but had his first start cut short when he felt something in his elbow. It turned out to be elbow tendonitis, which shut him down for over three weeks. Billingsley last pitched in a major league game on April 15, 2013.

"I'm just anxious to get back out there. I've been through this whole process, but you have to just be patient and keep working," Billingsley said. "It can be very frustrating at times, but it's all just part of the process."

Bilingsley estimated he would probably need five rehab starts, progressing like spring training with increasing pitch counts and innings in each start. Class-A Rancho Cucamonga is home against Bakersfield next weekend through Monday, and Triple-A Albuquerque returns home on Monday, June 9 for a week. Though no schedule has yet been set.

Getting even further ahead of ourselves, when Billingsley is ready to return in what looks to be early July at this point, what will his role be? Manager Don Mattingly said it was too soon to know what the team will need, but that Billingsley will build up his arm strength as a starter during rehab.

"It's not for me to be worried about. I'm worried 100 percent about trying to get back to pitching," Billingsley said. "That's where my focus is."

Carl Crawford, who sprained his ankle on Tuesday, has been progressing quickly. Manager Don Mattingly said Crawford has been working in the weight room, doing agility work, hitting off a tee, and would have been cleared to join the team in batting practice on the field on Sunday but the Dodgers didn't take BP on the field before the series finale.

Mattingly said the medical staff is hopeful that Crawford would be ready to be activated on or close to June 12, his first day eligible.

"He's doing really well. I say that cautiously because medical would like me to say that cautiously," Mattingly said, while knocking on the wooden dugout bench. "But they have their fingers crossed with what he's doing."

Mattingly said Scott Elbert, who like Chad Billingsley is recovering from Tommy John surgery, is progressing nicely. Elbert has been throwing bullpen sessions at the Dodgers facility at Camelback Ranch and last week topped 90 mph while throwing live batting practice. He could start a minor league rehab assignment at some point soon, too.

"Scotty's on the move," Mattingly said.

Onelki Garcia, also rehabbing with Elbert in Arizona, has had numerous setbacks and hasn't been throwing bullpen sessions recently.

Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis, on the disabled list with a right ankle sprain, was sent home Sunday with the flu. Mattingly said fellow DL-mate Juan Uribe is also sick. Erisbel Arruebarrena was sick and unavailble on Saturday, but is better Sunday. The infielder will be available if needed in the series finale against the Pirates

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers try to salvage a split of their weekend series against the Pirates on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball, and will do so with Zack Greinke on the mound against old friend Edinson Volquez.

Greinke is 4-0 in five home starts this season and has struck out at least eight batters each time out, including a pair of 11-strikeout performances on April 23 against Philadelphia and last Tuesday against Cincinnati. Greinke has 46 strikeouts and six walks in 33⅔ innings at Dodger Stadium this season.

The normal ESPN Sunday television duo of Dan Shulman and John Kruk have the night off. Instead, ESPN will use a staff of seven strategically placed on-air talent on the broadcast.

Karl Ravech will call the play-by-play with Barry Larkin as analyst from traditional spots in their booth in the press box. They will be joined by Buster Olney, providing news and information from the press box; by Eric Wedge, who will talk strategy while sitting behind home plate; by Mark Mulder, who will talk pitching from the Pirates dugout; by Aaron Boone, who will talk offense from the Dodgers dugout; and by Doug Glanville, who will talk defense from the right field pavilion.

"We’ll look to bring viewers closer to the game through the vantage points of our Baseball Tonight experts, who will be strategically placed in positions where they can capture all of the storylines happening during a baseball game," said ESPN vice president of production Mike McQuade.

Volquez, who led the majors with 105 walks in 2012 and led the National League with 108 earned runs allowed in 2013, leads the NL with six wild pitches so far this year. The right-hander pitched the final month of the 2013 season with the Dodgers and even made their NLCS roster, though he didn't pitch in the series.

Volquez somehow parlayed a 5.71 ERA compiled mostly at Petco Park into a $5 million contract with Pittsburgh, and it looked like a steal in April, when he started off with a 1.93 ERA in his first six games, including five starts, with 20 strikeouts, eight walks and just one home run allowed. But in his last six starts Volquez has a 6.34 ERA with 22 strikeouts, 15 walks and a whopping nine home runs allowed in 32⅔ innings.

Andre Ethier is 6-for-16 (.375) with three doubles and five walks against Volquez, and Matt Kemp is 5-for-12 (.417) with a home run and two walks. Adrian Gonzalez is 4-for-12 (.333) with two home runs, and Chone Figgins is 4-for-8 (.500) with a home run that came in 2006.

Hanley Ramirez, who has hits in each of his last six at-bats including two home runs and a double, is 3-for-19 (.158) with a double and a walk in his career against Volquez. Ramirez has driven in at least one run in each of his last five trips to the plate.

Bucs roster move

The Pirates on Sunday traded Bryan Morris, who was sent by the Dodgers to Pittsburgh in the Manny Ramirez trade in 2008, to the Marlins for the 39th overall pick in this week's MLB Draft, a draft pick that is tradeable as part of the competitive balance rounds, the only picks allowed to be traded.

Pittsburgh called up starter Casey Sadler to take the open spot on the active roster. Sadler, who was 6-1 with a 2.66 ERA in eight starts with Triple-A Indianapolis, pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the Pirates earlier this year.

People in Los Angeles will be able to see at least two of the four games of this weekend series against the Pirates.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers welcome the Pirates to town for a four-game series beginning Thursday night at Dodger Stadium, looking to continue their mastery over the Pittsburgh in Los Angeles. The Dodgers have won their last nine home games against the Pirates and have beaten Pittsburgh in 17 of their last 19 meetings at Dodger Stadium, dating back to 2008.

They have won 31 of their last 38 meetings in Los Angeles, dating back to 2003. Here is a look at the pitching matchups for the four-game series, half of which can be seen by substantially more people than usual in and around Los Angeles.

Thursday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Former UCLA Bruins pitcher and No. 1 overall draft pick Gerrit Cole made his major league debut last June 11. Dan Haren had three more starts before hitting the disabled list then beginning his second-half run with the Nationals that earned him a $10 million contract for 2014 with the Dodgers. The two have reasonably similar numbers since then:

Haren: 29 games, 28 starts, 164⅔ innings, 21.3 percent strikeout rate, 4.8 percent walk rate, 19 home runs, 3.77 ERA, 1.190 WHIP

Cole: 29 starts, 182 innings, 21.5 percent strikeout rate, 6.6 percent walk rate, 15 home runs, 3.41 ERA, 1.225 WHIP

Friday, 7:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Dodgers catcher Drew Butera has caught two no-hitters in his career, and both pitchers happen to face off on Friday night. Josh Beckett, fresh off his Sunday masterpiece, will try to tie Johnny Vander Meer against the Pirates. Francisco Liriano, who threw a no-hitter for the Twins on May 3, 2011, is winless in 11 starts with a 5.06 ERA this season though he does have 58 strikeouts in 58⅔ innings.

Because Beckett pitched the 11th no-hitter for the Dodgers since the franchise moved to Los Angeles, the Dodgers are offering $11 seats in the reserve and left field pavilion sections for Friday's game.

Saturday, 4:15 p.m. (Fox)

Hyun-jin Ryu is coming off a gem of his own, taking a perfect game into the eighth inning on Monday. Ryu has made it through five innings before allowing a run in six of his nine starts this season. Brandon Cumpton made his major league debut against the Dodgers, allowing three runs in five innings last June 15. He has only allowed 13 runs in 44⅓ major league innings since (a 2.23 ERA), with 27 strikeouts and six walks.

Sunday, 5:05 p.m. (ESPN2*)

Zack Greinke and Edinson Volquez are both 0-for-1 with a strikeout against each other at the plate, but Greinke also has two walks against Volquez. Advantage, Greinke.

*If the Heat eliminate the Pacers before a possible Sunday Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Dodgers-Pirates Sunday Night Baseball game will be moved from ESPN2 to ESPN, and ESPN Deportes will also televise the baseball game instead of basketball.
