SAN DIEGO -- Dodgers ninth-round draft pick, right-handed pitcher Matt Campbell out of Clemson, was added to the roster of the Class-A Great Lakes Loons on Friday, the highest placement to date of any Dodgers 2014 draft pick.

Campbell saved eight games as Clemson's closer in his senior season in 2014, and was 4-0 with a 0.84 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 15 walks in 32 innings. The right-hander signed for $20,000.

Campbell was one of a number of college relievers drafted by the Dodgers this year - 11th-rounder A.J. Vanegas out of Stanford and 15th-round Joe Broussard of LSU come to mind as well - likely with the fastest track to the majors of any of their 2014 picks.

In a corresponding move, the Loons placed right-hander Mark Pope, a Midwest League All-Star, on the disabled list.

The Dodgers also announced the signing of catcher Brant Whiting, their 30th-round draft pick out of Stanford. As a redshirt junior in 2014 he hit .281/.353/.344 with seven doubles, 17 walks and 20 strikeouts in 52 games.

With the signing of Whiting, the Dodgers have signed 26 of their 40 picks, including their top seven picks, nine of their top 10 picks, and 18 of the top 22.

NEW YORK, NY -- The Dodgers on Friday continued their run on college players, picking Clemson right-handed pitcher Matt Campbell in the ninth round with pick, No. 279 overall. That makes six college selections in seven picks so far on Friday, including five college pitchers.

The 6'0, 205-pound senior was the closer for Clemson in 2014, saving eight games. He was 4-0 with a 0.84 ERA in 25 games, with 45 strikeouts and 15 walks in 32 innings.

"He’s throwing strikes and throwing his fastball well," Tiger head coach Jack Leggett told Steve Bradley of My Orange Update in April. "He’s got a good changeup, he competes, and he’s got a good fastball. He knows how to pitch, and he’s a competitor. We just have had trouble getting to him. That sixth, seventh and eighth innings have really been tough on us."

Here is an interview with Campbell from March:
