Kershaw struck out 13 and extended his streak to 28 straight scoreless innings, the longest streak by a Dodger in 26 years.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers offense came alive to the point of excess on Sunday, backing another brilliant Clayton Kershaw performance in a 6-0 win over the Cardinals to capture the four-game series. Coupled with the Giants' loss to the Reds, the Dodgers (47-37, .560) pulled into a virtual tie with San Francisco (46-36, .561) for first place in the National League West.

It took the Dodgers exactly three weeks to erase a 9½-game deficit, their largest of the season.

Kershaw pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out 13. He extended his scoreless streak to a career-best 28 consecutive innings, the longest streak by a Dodger since Orel Hershiser's MLB-record 59 straight scoreless innings in 1988.

The Cardinals actually had their chances against Kershaw, putting runners in scoring position in four different innings but as a team were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position against the Dodgers ace.

"The thing with Clayton is that we've been seeing this for a while," manager Don Mattingly said. "Every year there have been numerous games where he has gone out and done this. It's hard to feel like this is so much different than the others. It seems the same. "

The Dodgers' rally in the fourth inning started with the most unlikely of things, a bunt single to a vacant third base against a shifted infield defense by Adrian Gonzalez to break up Shelby Miller's no-hit bit. Actually, the rally started a batter earlier when a slumping Yasiel Puig battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a leadoff walk.

With Puig on second and Gonzalez at first, Matt Kemp lined a more traditional single, to center to score Puig, with an alert Gonzalez advancing to third base on the play. That hustle paid off two batters later when Juan Uribe flew out to center field for a sacrifice fly and a 2-0 lead.

Most of the same cast came through again in the fifth inning, with Puig turning a single to left into a hustle double, then scoring on a base hit by Gonzalez. Kemp followed with a double, then Andre Ethier ended the competitive phase of the contest with a three-run blast into the right field pavilion, his first home run since May 27.

The run support was more than enough for Kershaw, who won his sixth straight start for the first time of his career and completed the best month of his seven-year career to date.

About the only negative for Kershaw on Sunday was that he actually walked two batters, matching his total for his previous five starts.

The Dodgers allowed four runs in four games against the reigning National League pennant winners.

"The rotation sets the tone for the whole team," Kershaw said. "If your starters are going deep into games, it sets up the bullpen to do their jobs, and they've been doing a good job. From there if you're having quick innings and getting guys off the field quick they will score runs for you. It's a domino effect."

Kershaw in June was ridiculous. He made six starts, and won them all. He allowed all of four runs on 26 hits, with four walks and 61 strikeouts in 44 innings.

Pitcher of the months.

Notes

Kershaw struck out six before he walked a batter on Sunday, giving him at the time 100 strikeouts with nine walks, the fewest walks in a season by a Dodgers pitcher since at least 1914 at the time of their 100th strikeout. The previous record was Sandy Koufax, with 19 walks at the time of his 100th strikeout in 1995.

Sunday was Kershaw's second double-digit strikeout game of the season and 24th of his career, the latter tying him with Hideo Nomo for sixth-most by a Dodger. Koufax holds the franchise mark with 97 games of 10 or more strikeouts.

Among pitchers with at least 60 strikeouts in a month, Kershaw's four walks in June are the second-fewest, behind only Curt Schilling (62 strikeouts, two walks in May 2002).

The home run by Ethier in the fifth inning snapped a string of 96 plate appearances and 25 games without a long ball.

Up next

The Dodgers welcome the Indians to town for an interleague matchup beginning Monday night. Dan Haren starts the opener of the three-game series for the Dodgers, while Corey Kluber starts for Cleveland.

Sunday particulars

The left-hander will pitch in back-to-back games for the first time during his rehab assignment.

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers relief pitcher Scott Elbert threw a bullpen session at Dodger Stadium on Sunday morning and will head next to Triple-A Albuquerque, the next stop on his minor league rehabilitation assignment.

Elbert is scheduled to pitch on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Isotopes, who will be in El Paso. It is the first time Elbert will have pitched in a game setting on back-to-back days in his rehab assignment.

This was a key point in Elbert's rehab in 2013, with included eight minor league games coming off two arthroscopic surgeries on his left elbow. But after the first time he threw in back-to-back games, for Double-A Chattanooga last year, Elbert felt something in his elbow and was shut down. He ultimately needed Tommy John surgery, which he had in June.

Manager Don Mattingly watched Elbert's bullpen session Sunday and saw him pitch twice in Arizona the last time the Dodgers were in Phoenix, and said he likes the progress he has seen from the left-hander.

"The fact that he's bouncing back and feeling good is good for him," Mattingly said. "I'm sure there are all kind of road blocks mentally with not having pitched, but he has looked good so far."

Elbert has allowed four runs, including two home runs over 3⅓ innings in his four minor league rehab games to date, with rookie-level Ogden and Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. The appearance in Ogden was his first in nearly a decade and was four days shy of the 10th anniversary of his professional debut in the same stadium.

"I wasn't so much nervous for that, but more that I hadn't pitched in a game in a year and a half," Elbert said on Sunday.

The 28-year-old left-hander (Elbert turns 29 in August) last pitched for the Dodgers on Aug. 26, 2012. Over 2011-2012 he was a key member of the bullpen, putting up a 2.32 ERA in 90 games with 63 strikeouts and 27 walks in 66 innings. During those two years he held left-handed batters to hitting .232/.305/.319.

Elbert's rehab assignment, which began on June 18, can last up to 30 days, so the Dodgers will have a roster decision to make right around the All-Star break. Elbert is out of options.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers go for a fifth straight series win on Sunday afternoon against the Cardinals, and will do so without Hanley Ramirez yet again. The shortstop is out of the lineup and completely unavailable for the Dodgers on Sunday, with tightness in his left calf.

"He's going to be day-to-day. He's not going to be available today," manager Don Mattingly said on Sunday morning. "We'll see where he is at then make decisions."

Ramirez sat four games with a sore shoulder before returning to the lineup on Saturday. He was 1-for-1 with a walk but only played two innings after feeling the tightness in his left calf. Ramirez, who was limping around the clubhouse on Sunday, has dealt with a myriad of minor injuries all season but hasn't yet been placed on the disabled list.

But Mattingly seemed more willing than usual to consider extended time off for Ramirez, who has an active 11-game hitting streak and is hitting .272/.358/.471 with 21 doubles and 11 home runs in 74 games this season.

"[The disabled list] will be part of the discussions moving forward," Mattingly said. "It just depends where you are at at the time and how you balance it. Do you take that time? Maybe he'll be ready in five or six days, but you can take the 15 and go into the All-Star break and be totally healthy, hopefully. That's the balance."

Putting Ramirez on the DL now (or any time through Wednesday) would take him through the All-Star break.

Cards roster move

After needing six innings out of the bullpen on Saturday, the Cardinals brought up some relief reinforcement in the form of Jorge Rondon. The 26-year-old right-hander was 3-2 with a 3.41 ERA in 27 games with Triple-A Memphis, with 23 strikeouts and 12 walks in 34⅓ innings. Eric Fornataro, who pitched the final two innings for the Cardinals on Saturday, was optioned back to Triple-A.

As reminded by Chris Jackson of the Albuquerque Examiner, Rondon was a key figure in a massive brawl between Memphis and Albuquerque in June 2013 that saw the suspension of six Isotopes, including Dee Gordon.

The Dodgers have placed 14 different players on 15 disabled list stints in 2014.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers on Sunday placed infielder Justin Turner on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring, suffered during Saturday's win over the Cardinals at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers recalled infielder Carlos Triunfel from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding roster move.

Turner strained his hamstring while running out a double hit in the second inning on Saturday. After limping into second base, Turner left the game after a brief consultation with Dodgers trainer Stan Conte.

"When it first happened I thought it was a cramp. It tightened up real quick," Turner said Sunday morning. "I tried stretching it out and it just wouldn't loosen up."

Turner said his hamstring felt a little right Sunday morning, though it felt fine walking around. He said the trainers told him he might miss anywhere from seven days to three weeks.

"Stan was hopeful it wouldn't be a two-month injury," manager Don Mattingly said. "[Turner] came in today feeling pretty good. It wasn't like he couldn't walk or anything. We're just hopeful that it's a regular hamstring injury."

Signed to a minor league deal in the offseason, Turner has proven to be one of the most valuable reserves on the Dodgers. He is hitting .302/.358/.434 with 10 doubles, three home runs and a triple in 58 games this season. In June he was hitting .400/.468/.545 with 11 RBI in 62 plate appearances.

"Any time you go on the DL it's frustrating," Turner said. "But I'd rather go on the DL feeling good than go on the DL feeling crappy."

The 29-year-old utility man has played eight games at second base and six games at shortstop this season, but his main contribution was filling in for Juan Uribe at third base for the better part of a month. Turner has played 34 games at third base this season, including 27 starts, and hit .349/.413/.542 in 28 games during the 34 games Uribe was on the disabled list.

Triunfel was just optioned to Albuquerque on Thursday when Uribe was activated from the DL, but this transaction effectively negates that move. He was 2-for-7 with a home run in seven games with the Dodgers this season, including six games and two starts at shortstop.

LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw looks to complete the best month of his career in the Dodgers' finale with the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

Kershaw takes a 21-inning scoreless streak into Sunday, including his 15-strikeout no-hitter on June 18. Sunday is his first start at Dodger Stadium since the no-hitter, the 22nd no-no in Dodgers franchise history. His numbers in June are ridiculous:

Five starts, five wins, four runs allowed, 21 hits, two walks and 48 strikeouts in 37 innings.

This is the second time Kershaw has won five consecutive starts, having also done so from July 7 to Aug. 1, 2011.* He has never won six starts in a row.

*Kershaw had quite a finish to 2011, his first Cy Young Award-winning campaign. After those five straight wins he lost in Arizona (Cody Ransom of all people hit a two-run home run in the seventh to beat him), then won four straight starts, struck out 10 in a no-decision in Atlanta, then won his final four starts. The stretch run: 15 starts, 13-1, with a 1.22 ERA.

The last Dodger to win six straight starts was Zack Greinke, from Aug. 5 to Sept. 1, 2013.

The last Dodger to win six games in a month was Yhency Brazoban, who was 6-2 in 18 relief appearances in September/October 2004. The last Dodgers starter to win six games in a month was Hideo Nomo in June 1995, his second month with the team.

The last Dodgers pitcher with 50 strikeouts in a month was Chan Ho Park, with 51 strikeouts in September 2000. The last with 60 strikeouts was Nomo in June 1995.

There have only been three pitchers since 1914 with at least 50 strikeouts and no more than two walks in a month: Cliff Lee (54 strikeouts, one walk in September 2013), Curt Schilling (62 strikeouts, two walks in May 2002) and Pedro Martinez (51 strikeouts, two walks in August 2000).

Kershaw currently has a 0.97 ERA for the month. To keep that for June he would either need to not allow an earned run or pitch at least 8⅓ innings while allowing no more than one earned run. Since 1914 there have been 20 Dodgers pitching months of at least 40 innings and an ERA under 1.00, the last by Orel Hershiser in September 1988, holding the top spot with 55 scoreless innings in the season's final month.

Kershaw's best month by ERA was July 2009, when he was 3-0 with a 0.71 ERA in six starts, with 34 strikeouts and 18 walks in 38 innings. By contrast, current Kershaw has 18 walks in his last 17 starts.

But to complete his signature month, Kershaw must first get past the Cardinals, a team that has beaten him in each of his last five starts against them, including the playoffs.

The most recent loss is the one that stings the most, when Kershaw allowed seven runs on 10 hits in just four innings as St. Louis captured the pennant with a 9-0 win over the Dodgers in Game 6 of the 2013 NLCS.

In those five losses, which include four starts in St. Louis dating back to July 2012, Kershaw has allowed 22 runs (21 earned) on 26 hits in 28⅔ innings, a 6.59 ERA, with 11 walks and 24 strikeouts. He was 4-2 with a 2.75 ERA against the Cardinals in nine career starts before his current losing streak against them.

Matt Holliday is 10-for-38 (.263) with a home run, a double and 10 strikeouts against Kershaw in his career, but also has 10 walks for a .417 on-base percentage. No other batter has more than six career walks against Kershaw.

St. Louis has several pitchers on the shelf, but here's a look at the potential weekend matchups.

The Dodgers return home to Los Angeles, starting with a four-game weekend series against the Cardinals in an NLCS rematch of sorts at Dodger Stadium. Except this time Michael Wacha took time off from being the second coming to hit the disabled list with right shoulder problems.

Wacha isn't alone among injured Cardinals pitchers. Joe Kelly has been out since April with a left hamstring strain, Jaime Garcia is on the DL with left shoulder inflammation, and Shelby Miller left his Tuesday start in Colorado with back spasms.

St. Louis already called up 2013 first-round pick Marco Gonzalez (19th overall) to start Wednesday at Coors Field, so he's out for the series in Los Angeles. Knowing that the Cardinals' rotation is a very fluid situation, here's a look at the scheduled starters this weekend at Dodger Stadium.

Thursday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Josh Beckett is 2-2 with a 1.73 ERA, with six runs allowed in four starts, with 27 strikeouts and five walks in 26 innings. Adam Wainwright has been his typical brilliant self this season, 10-3 with a 2.08 ERA so far. In his last eight outings he had one blow-up start, with seven runs allowed to San Francisco, but allowed six total runs in the other seven starts during that span.

Friday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Since returning from the disabled list Hyun-jin Ryu has 35 strikeouts against just seven walks and has six wins in seven starts to show for it. Carlos Martinez after 30 relief appearances joined the starting rotation on June 16. He has allowed four runs in nine innings in his two starts, with eight strikeouts and five walks.

Saturday, 4:15 p.m. PT (Fox)

Zack Greinke had his one truly bad start of the season on Monday in Kansas City, but he returns home to Dodger Stadium where his strikeout rate this year has been an absurd 30.9 percent, compared to 20.4 percent on the road. The Cardinals send the still undefeated TBD to the mound, but the upside for the Dodgers is that TBD is also winless. Truth be told, the St. Louis player development machine has been so good of late they can probably turn one of the flight attendants on the trip out west into a 92-mph sinkerballer with a deceptive delivery in time to make this Saturday start.

The game will be televised exclusively by Fox.

Sunday, 1:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Clayton Kershaw takes his streak of 21 straight scoreless innings into Sunday's series finale, his first home start since his no-hitter on June 18. Technically his opponent is also TBD, but Miller is in line to start Sunday for St. Louis on four days rest and told Cody Ulm of MLB.com on Tuesday he didn't expect to miss a start.
