Josh Beckett pitched yet another scoreless start on Sunday, but also got the Dodgers' winning rally started in the fifth inning of an 8-2 victory over the Rockies at Coors Field.

The win secured a third straight series win against the Rockies, and kept the Dodgers in first place in the National League West, by a half-game over San Francisco.

Beckett didn't have his best stuff, nor his best control, but managed to get through five innings without allowing a run, his seventh scoreless start of the season. In nine of his 17 starts he has allowed zero or one run this year, and lowered his ERA to 2.26, good for third in the National League.

Beckett walked Corey Dickerson in the first inning, then with one out in the third inning walked Charlie Blackmon then Dickerson again. Beckett's third walk of the game snapped the Dodgers' streak of 39 straight games with two or fewer walks by their starting pitcher, the longest streak of the modern era (since 1900).

But Beckett's biggest contribution on Sunday might have been at the plate, where he doubled with one out in the fifth inning. A single and a walk later, the team found itself with the bases loaded, an Achilles heel so far this year. But Adrian Gonzalez cashed in with a single to score two runs to open the scoring.

Matt Kemp followed with an RBI single, then after a walk to Scott Van Slyke to load the bases again, Juan Uribe grounded a ball up the third base line. Nolan Arenado made a terrific play to get to the ball then, knowing he didn't have a play at first base, threw home to nearly get Gonzalez but catcher Willin Rosario wasn't set up for the force play and tagged Gonzalez too late. In all, the Dodgers scored five runs in the fifth.

It was the 10th time this season the Dodgers have scored at least five runs in an inning, including one in each of the last three games.

The Dodgers added three insurance runs in the eighth inning, including an RBI double by freshly minted All-Star outfielder Yasiel Puig.

The Rockies scored a run in the eighth inning because Carlos Triunfel lost track of outs and failed to take a few steps to touch second base before throwing to first on what was an easy double play ball.

Notes

Miguel Rojas, who picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the fifth, left the game with a right forearm contusion. X-rays were negative, and the team says he is day-to-day.

With singles by Gonzalez and Uribe in the fifth inning, the Dodgers got two hits with the bases loaded in the same game for the first time since Aug. 22, 2013.

Kemp singled to right field in the second inning to snap an 0-for-18 slump. He ended his day with four hits.

Dee Gordon's infield single to second base in the third inning was his 100th hit of the season, making Gordon the first Dodgers middle infielder with 100 hits before the All-Star break since Cesar Izturis in 2004.

Beckett's double in the fifth inning was his third two-bagger in his last two starts. The last Dodgers pitcher with extra-base hits in back-to-back games was Chad Billingsley from May 9-14, 2011.

Gonzalez was originally called out at home on the throw home by Arenado in the fifth inning, but upon instant replay challenge was ruled safe. The Dodgers are 13-8 in replay challenges this season.

Up next

After 17 games in 17 days the Dodgers have Monday off, part of which will be used to travel to Detroit. The Dodgers will next visit the Tigers for a brief two-game series at Comerica Park beginning Tuesday night, with Hyun-jin Ryu on the mound. Justin Verlander takes the mound on Tuesday for Detroit.

DENVER -- The Dodgers on Sunday placed shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena on the 15-day disabled list with a right hip flexor strain, and recalled infielder Carlos Triunfel from Triple-A Albuquerque before their series finale against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Arruebarrena last played during Friday's game, in which he played the final five innings at shortstop and went 1-for-3 at the plate after Hanley Ramirez was hit by a pitch on his left hand during the fifth inning.

Arruebarrena was recalled from Albuquerque before Thursday's game and filled in for Ramirez on defense to close out each of the first two games of the series. Ramirez on Saturday played all nine innings at shortstop for the first time in 13 games, since June 22.

On the season, Arruebarrena is 5-for-16 with a double and a walk in his two major league stints, hitting .313/.353/.375. He hit .208/.252/.302 in 25 games with Double-A Chattanooga, and .357/.410/.457 in 20 games with Triple-A Albuquerque.

Triunfel played in two games with the Isotopes after getting optioned on Thursday, but was pulled after three innings on Saturday. He is 2-for-13 with a home run in 10 games with the Dodgers this season, hitting .154/.154/.385. He has played nine games at shortstop, including four starts.

Miguel Rojas starts at shortstop on Sunday for the Dodgers, with Hanley Ramirez getting a day off.

Rockies roster move

Colorado also made a roster move before the game. Nick Masset, who faced the first four of seven straight Dodgers batters to reach base in a five-run seventh inning rally on Saturday, was placed on the 15-day disabled list. The Rockies recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs Brooks Brown, a 29-year-old reliever who in his first appearance will make his major league debut. Brown was 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA in 31 games in Triple-A, with 35 strikeouts and 16 walks in 39⅓ innings.

Beckett allowed five runs in five innings his last start against Cleveland on Tuesday, one more earned run than he allowed during five starts in the month of June.

He enters play on Sunday fifth in the National League with a 2.37 ERA in his 16 starts, including a 2.30 ERA in seven starts since his no-hitter on May 25, with 41 strikeouts and just nine walks.

The Dodgers have gone 39 straight games with two or fewer walks issued by their starting pitcher, the longest streak of the modern era (since 1900). The last game in which a Dodgers starter walked more than two batters was Beckett's no-hitter, which included three walks.

Beckett faced Colorado once this season, allowing two runs (on two solo home runs) in eight innings in a no-decision at Dodger Stadium on April 25, with six strikeouts and no walks.

Drew Butera is catching on Sunday, his ninth straight time catching Beckett and the 11th time in Beckett's last 12 starts Butera has started behind the plate.

Hanley Ramirez gets the day off in Sunday's series finale as expected, though it won't be Erisbel Arruebarrena filling in at shortstop. Arruebarrena was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right hip flexor strain. Miguel Rojas gets the start at shortstop on Sunday.

Scott Van Slyke, who got his first day off against a left-handed pitcher all season on Saturday, is back in the lineup on Sunday, playing center field and batting fifth against southpaw Yohan Flande.

Troy Tulowitzki is back in the Rockies lineup on Sunday after missing two games with tightness in his groin.
