Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu left Wednesday night's game against the Braves with a strain of the right gluteus muscle. The Dodgers say Ryu is day-to-day.

The left-hander got the first two outs of the sixth inning, then walked B.J. Upton. After delivering the final pitch to Upton, Ryu grimaced off the mound and pointed to the back of his leg. With trainers and manager Don Mattingly out to the mound as Ryu tried to stretch.

Having already thrown 97 pitches in the game, Ryu was immediately removed from the game in favor of Jamey Wright, who got the final out of the inning to keep the Dodgers deficit at 3-2.

Ryu walked off under his own power.

With Monday's pending off day, Ryu will have an extra day of rest before his next scheduled start, provided he is able to answer the bell next Tuesday against the Padres at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers planned to move newly-acquired Kevin Correia to the bullpen after his spot start on Monday, but that could change quickly.

Manager Don Mattingly said after the game that Ryu would get an MRI and meet with team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache after the team gets back to Los Angeles on Thursday night.

Braves move

After the game, Atlanta optioned relief pitcher Juan Jaime to Triple-A Gwinnett. A corresponding move will come before Thursday morning's series finale.

The Dodgers got the short end of the stick on Wednesday night, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Braves to snap a three-game winning streak, and they also lost starter Hyun-jin Ryu to a strained right gluteus muscle.

A loss like this was bound to happen at some point for the Dodgers, who had won their last six one-run contests and nine of their last 10 one-run games. Even with the loss, the Dodgers are 22-16 in one-run games this season.

The Dodgers got on the board first thanks to five hits in the second inning, good enough to plate two runs though a potential larger inning was hindered by a double-play grounder by A.J. Ellis.

A leadoff double by Evan Gattis in the bottom of the inning led to a run that cut the Dodgers' 2-0 lead in half, then the game came down to a series of individual battles that didn't go the Dodgers' way.

With two outs in the fourth inning and runners at the corners, Andrelton Simmons - playing in his first game in eight days after an ankle injury - reached out to drop an outside pitch into short right field to drive home the tying run.

In the fifth inning Dee Gordon led off with a single, then engaged with Ervin Santana in a test of wills. Over the next three batters Santana threw over to first base 12 different times, and finally on the 12th pitch delivered since Gordon reached first, he stole his 53rd base of the season, and his first since Aug. 2.

But despite the distraction, Santana was able to strike out two of the other three batters in the inning to escape unscathed.

In the bottom of the fifth inning with Jason Heyward on second base and two outs, Justin Upton singled to right to give Atlanta the lead.

In the top of the sixth inning with Carl Crawford on third base and one out, A.J. Ellis struck out, then Miguel Rojas was intentionally walked to get to Ryu, who struck out to end the frame.

The Dodgers got exactly what they wanted against Craig Kimbrel, putting two runners on with the meat of the order coming up with nobody out in the ninth. But after Yasiel Puig struck out, Gonzalez delivered a hit with runners in scoring position, only it was hit right at Upton in left field, who came close enough to catching the ball that the runners had to hold. Upton then threw to second base, which was a mistake as Dee Gordon made it easily while Andre Ethier was hung up between second and third.

Matt Kemp, who doubled earlier in the game, was up with the bases loaded and one out, but his sharp ground ball was right at second baseman Phil Gosselin for a tailor-made double play to end the game.

Kmbrel picked up his 35th save of the season, dropping Los Angeles to 0-43 this season when trailing after seven innings.

Up next

The two teams are back at it again quite soon, with a Thursday morning (9 a.m. PT) series finale on getaway day. Roberto Hernandez makes his second start as a Dodger, while old friend Aaron Harang gets the call for Atlanta.

The Dodgers go for a fourth straight victory on Wednesday night, in the third game of a four-game series against the Braves at Turner Field. They send Hyun-jin Ryu to the mound, quietly putting together a great season.

This is the 10th winning streak of at least three games this season for the Dodgers, though only one of the previous nine streaks reached a fourth game. On the surface, Ryu on the road gives the Dodgers an excellent chance for a second extended winning streak.

The Dodgers have won nine of Ryu's 12 road starts this year, and the left-hander is 9-2 with a 2.61 ERA in those starts, with 59 strikeouts and 17 walks in 72⅓ innings. Ryu's last start was magnificent, allowing just two hits and a walk to the Angels in Anaheim, one of four starts of seven scoreless innings on the road this season.

A win on Wednesday would make Ryu the first Dodgers pitcher to win 10 road games since Chan Ho Park in 1999.

Ryu has been no slouch at home, either. He is 4-3 with a 3.94 ERA in 10 starts at Dodger Stadium this season, but his peripheral numbers are strong, such as 56 strikeouts against only eight walks, and a home strikeout rate (22.0 percent) better than on the road (20.3 percent).

Overall, Ryu falls third in the Dodgers' pecking order, but his 2014 season has been great.

He's 13-5 with a 3.21 ERA on the surface, but he also ranks 11th among 94 qualified starting pitchers in baseball with a 2.79 FIP, 19th with a 3.21 xFIP, and 22nd with a 3.30 SIERA. Ryu's 4.60 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks 14th in baseball, and third on his own staff behind Clayton Kershaw (8.58) and Zack Greinke (5.47).

Dodgers starters lead baseball with a 4.17 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 688 strikeouts, and are third with 165 walks.

Ryu has walked two or fewer batters in each of his last 19 starts, and has made a remarkable turnaround within his two years in the majors with his control.

In his first 17 major league starts Ryu had 37 walks, a walk rate of 8.1 percent. It has taken him 35 more starts to walk another 37 batters, a walk rate of 4.3 percent dating back to last July. Dating back the last 365 days, Ryu's walk rate is seventh-best in baseball, better than even Kershaw and Greinke.

The Dodgers and Braves meet again for the second time in two weeks, this time at Turner Field in Atlanta for four games. The Dodgers swept the Braves in Los Angeles, including a pair of one-run wins, the beginning of a horrific 0-8 road trip for Atlanta.

The Braves recovered to take two of three from the division-leading Nationals over the weekend at home, where Atlanta is 33-25. Here is a look at the expected pitching matchups for the week in Atlanta:

Monday, 4:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, ESPN)

Kevin Correia will make his Dodgers debut in the series opener. He has allowed one of the three true outcomes (home run, walk, strikeout) to just 18.5 percent of his batters faced, lowest among the 89 qualified major league starters (Tim Hudson is next at 20.8 percent, then Henderson Alvarez at 20.9 percent). Julio Teheran was awesome at Dodger Stadium on July 31, striking out nine while allowing two runs in eight innings. But he lost because he wasn't Clayton Kershaw.

Tuesday, 4:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Dan Haren will earn a $250,000 bonus on Tuesday by making his 24th start of the season. Mike Minor in his last 10 starts has allowed 44 runs in 54 innings, including 12 home runs allowed.

Wednesday, 4:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Hyun-jin Ryu is 9-2 with a 2.69 ERA in 12 road starts this season, including four different starts of seven scoreless innings. Ervin Santana has won four straight decisions over his last five starts, with a 2.65 ERA and 32 strikeouts with 12 walks in 34 innings during that span.

Thursday, 9:10 a.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

The Dodgers' earliest start time of the season will be started by Roberto Hernandez, who is 1-1 in three starts against the Braves this season, with a 4.26 ERA, 14 walks and just seven strikeouts in 19 innings. His win came at Turner Field on June 18, though Hernandez allowed five runs in six innings. Old friend Aaron Harang has a 2.53 ERA over his last five starts but has five no-decisions. The Braves have lost all five of those games, thanks to 11 total runs scored, including seven runs with Harang in the game.
