Dodgers pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu has suffered a setback in his recovery from a left shoulder impingement that has sidelined him since spring training, and has been slowed down in his rehab.

Ryu threw a pair of bullpen sessions last week at Dodger Stadium, then was going to travel with the team and throw to hitters on Monday in Milwaukee, but that plan was scrapped. On Monday, manager Don Mattingly said the plan shifted, for Ryu to throw to hitters in Los Angeles instead, but even that hasn't happened yet.

From Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:

"They've slowed him down a little bit," the Dodgers manager said of his No. 3 starter, who was suddenly scratched from making this trip after lack of velocity during a Friday bullpen session sent up a cautionary flag.

Ryu was shut down near the end of Spring Training in hopes of calming the inflammation that sidelined him twice last year, but there now are signs that the injury is more severe.

"You're always concerned with a starter," Mattingly said. "From the standpoint that they've slowed him down at all, you think about it a little bit. But I haven't had a major sign that I should be really concerned."

Some more specifics from Zach Helfand of the Los Angeles Times:

The Dodgers are still being cautious with Ryu, who threw a bullpen session on Friday. His velocity was at about 82 to 83 mph, Mattingly said, which was below what the team was comfortable with. Ryu hasn’t thrown since, to allow him extra days to rest.

Finally, from Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register:

"They decided to give him some days off," Mattingly said. "They thing it's just that tired arm thing you get in spring training."

Even before this setback, the timing of Ryu's comeback has been largely unknown, with nobody in the organization willing to comment on record as to any sort of return timetable, other than Ryu laughing and saying "of course" he would be ready by the All-Star break.

Ryu last threw in a game on March 17, so given that we are already seven weeks removed from his last competitive time on a mound he was already facing a reasonably long rehab process once he finally got started, which looked like it might happen as soon as this weekend.

That won't happen now.

Whenever Ryu is able to begin any type of rehab assignment, he would likely need almost a spring training's worth of starts — say, between four and six, each one progressively longer — to build up arm strength, so you can as a rough estimate add a month to whatever start date he might have for a tentative major league return.

So we are already into June, and probably mid-June at the absolute earliest for Ryu, and likely the same if not later for Brandon Beachy, who is recovering from his second career Tommy John surgery and is currently partaking in the undefined itinerary of throwing bullpen sessions — Tuesday's session did not go so well, writes J.P. Hoornstra of the LA Daily News.

Last week Andrew Friedman said he didn't expect to be able to make any sort of significant trade for pitching until June at the earliest.

"Historically April and May trades are pretty uncommon," Friedman said last week. "For the most part we're going to work from inside. We have a number of really interesting candidates."

In other words, the Dodgers will have to get by with what they have for now, and likely for the next four to six weeks as well. Joe Wieland didn't do so well in his first crack at the rotation on Wednesday. Carlos Frias did well in his first try and gets another shot on Thursday. The Dodgers will have to find a way to mix and match and find a combination that works out of Wieland, Frias, Mike Bolsinger and Zach Lee, and hope that holds up.

Right now, that's their best option, and really their only option. Which, frankly, is a little frightening.

LOS ANGELES -- Joc Pederson made an outstanding defensive play and had his first two home run game in the majors. But Pederson's fine play was not enough as the Brewers scored five runs in the first inning on their way to a 6-3 win on Wednesday night at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

Starting pitcher Joe Wieland made his Dodger debut but wasn't greeted very nicely by the Brewers.

The first four Brewers scored in the first inning on a pair of two-run home runs by Scooter Gennett and Adam Lind, respectively. Later with two out, a Martin Maldonado single scored Jean Segura with the fifth run of the inning.

Wieland would settle down a bit from that point but could not make it out of the fifth inning. Sergio Santos walked two consecutive batters to force in the Brewer's sixth run and then an infield single appeared to score another. But a successful challenge by manager Don Mattingly took that run off the board and ended that inning.

Relievers Paco Rodriguez, Juan Nicasio, and J.P. Howell held the Brewers scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Justin Turner scored the Dodgers first run when Jean Segura made a throwing error with two outs in the fourth inning.

Joc Pederson's two solo home runs were his eighth and ninth of the season. Pederson has hit seven home runs since April 27th.

Pederson's great catch came when pitcher Wily Peralta drove the ball to deep center field.

Your browser does not support iframes.

Adrian Gonzalez went 3-for-4 which included a leadoff double against Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth. However that was the extent of the Dodger rally as Rodriguez would strike out two of the next three Dodgers for his sixth save.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers as expected recalled pitcher Joe Wieland from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start the third game of a four-game series against the Brewers in Milwaukee. To make room on the active roster, Daniel Coulombe was optioned back to Triple-A.

Wieland arrived in Milwaukee on Tuesday, and will be the ninth different starting pitcher used in 27 games by the Dodgers this season. He was 3-0 with a 3.60 ERA in four starts with Oklahoma City, with 22 strikeouts and two walks in 20 innings.

Coulombe was just recalled from Triple-A on Monday, giving the Dodgers nine relief pitchers for the first two games in Milwaukee. Coulombe pitched on Tuesday night, allowing a run in the ninth inning on one hit and one walk. That is his only major league appearance this season.

The lefty Coulombe had a 1.74 ERA and one save in eight appearances with Oklahoma City, with 16 strikeouts and four walks in 10⅓ innings.

With the moves, the Dodgers are still carrying 13 pitchers and 12 position players on their active roster.

The Dodgers get to continue testing their pitching depth in the final two games of their series against the Brewers in Milwaukee, beginning with Joe Wieland making his Dodgers debut on Wednesday night at Miller Park.

With off days dwindling, Brandon McCarthy done for the year (and on some powerful post-surgery medication), and Hyun-jin Ryu still playing the waiting game, the Dodgers will need their fill-in gang to pitch more and more in the next month or so.

To date, the Dodgers have used four different pitchers to start five games outside of their planned starting five coming into the season. The club is 3-2 in those games, with mixed results from the starters.

In the most general sense, the ones with options - Mike Bolsinger and Carlos Frias - have outperformed the ones without - David Huff and Scott Baker - though we are only talking about five starts total here. The group collectively has combined to allow 12 runs on 27 hits in 26 innings (a 4.15 ERA), with 18 strikeouts and eight walks.

In 2014, the Dodgers were 11-14 in the 25 games started by those outside of their planned five, with a 5.22 ERA, with 72 strikeouts and 45 walks in 120⅔ innings, an average of 4.82 per start.

The club will blow by that 25-start mark easily this season, and the ongoing question all season will be do the Dodgers have enough depth to handle the load? So far, so good, but the real test is coming.

Wieland and Frias, part of the with-options group, start the final two games against the Brewers lineup that is averaging just 3.26 runs per game this season.

That Milwaukee offense has scored just 10 total runs in the five starts by Wily Peralta this season, all losses for the Brewers. Peralta is 0-4 with a 4.35 ERA, but has seen his strikeout rate fall this year to just 13.4 percent, down from 18.4 percent in 2014, when Peralta won 17 games.

The Dodgers have made their decision on who to call up from Triple-A Oklahoma City this week against the Brewers, as Joe Wieland is in Milwaukee and spoke with reporters before Tuesday night's game.

Wieland also said he would start Wednesday instead of Thursday, which would presumably move Carlos Frias to Thursday morning's series finale.

Mike Bolsinger, who was scratched on Sunday by Oklahoma City, will instead start Tuesday night in Triple-A. Wieland's spot in the OKC rotation falls on Thursday.

Wieland will be the ninth Dodgers starting pitcher in 27 games so far this season, and the fifth to come up from Oklahoma City. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 3.60 ERA in four starts in Triple-A this season, with 22 strikeouts and only two walks in 20 innings.

He has pitched exactly five innings in all four starts this season, and last pitched on Friday. He will be on regular rest for Wednesday night's game.

The Dodgers will need to make a corresponding move to make room on the active roster for Wieland, which means one of the nine relief pitchers is likely headed back to Oklahoma City.

In Tuesday night's game, the third base and left field carousels stop on Justin Turner and Alex Guerrero, respectively, with Turner batting fifth and Guerrero eighth.

The Dodgers are in Milwaukee to begin the Craig Counsell era, with a four-game series beginning Monday night at Miller Park. Here is a look at the starting pitching matchups and schedule for the four games.

Monday, 4:20 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Clayton Kershaw has made four starts in his career in Milwaukee and has allowed a total of three runs. He is 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA at Miller Park, even lower than his career 0.97 ERA at AT&T Park. The 0.87 ERA is Kershaw's lowest at any ballpark at which he has made at least two starts. Kyle Lohse has allowed eight home runs in five starts, and among all qualified pitchers in he majors Lohse ranks second-to-last in ERA (7.28) and next-to-last in ERA+ (53) and FIP (5.96).

Tuesday, 5:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Zack Greinke makes his first start outside of the NL West in 2015, playing at one of his old home parks. Matt Garza has a 4.60 ERA in five starts and a strikeout rate of just 14.3 percent, the lowest of his career, and well below is 19.7-percent career mark.

Wednesday, 5:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Carlos Frias has a streak of 10⅔ consecutive scoreless innings, dating back to last season, with 10 strikeouts and three 3 walks during that span. Wily Peralta has three quality starts and a 4.35 ERA in five starts, but Milwaukee has lost all five games thanks to just 10 runs of support in those games.

Thursday, 10:40 a.m. (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

The Dodgers haven't announced this starter yet, but with Mike Bolsinger scratched by Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday I'm going with him. Bolsinger allowed one run in 5⅔ innings in San Francisco on April 23, another road afternoon game on getaway day. So far with Oklahoma City this season, Bolsinger allowed only one run in 14 innings, with 21 strikeouts and four walks. Mike Fiers, who is tied for 10th in the National League with 34 strikeouts, is 3-0 against the Dodgers with a 1.08 ERA in three career games, including two starts.
