LOS ANGELES -- The perplexing season of Chris Hatcher continued on Wednesday night with a loss to the Braves. The only two batters who faced him reached base in the eighth inning, and both scored, sending the Dodgers to a 3-1 deficit that would become a 3-2 loss.

He allowed a broken-bat pop fly single to Andrelton Simmons, then with pinch-hitter Todd Cunningham trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt Hatcher walked him on four pitches.

Both runners scored. His ERA is 6.91.

"I would say I'm executing my pitches, but I'm not getting results. It's extremely frustrating," Hatcher said. "That showed tonight. They were trying to give me an out and I couldn't throw a strike. I got no words for you, it's just really frustrating."

Hatcher isn't the only one frustrated. Just ask former Dodgers announcer Ross Porter.

Hatcher throws hard, averaging 96.84 mph on his four-seam fastball and 96.15 mph on his sinker this year, per Brooks Baseball, and both pitches have been faster in May than in April.

"We know his stuff is there, we know he's capable. You don't lose faith in him. It's been a little bit of a roller coaster," manager Don Mattingly said. "A few of the other guys out there got off to a really good start early, but it hasn't been quite as consistent lately. It's something we've talked about."

Hatcher's ERA in May was 3.00 entering Wednesday night (it is 6.00 now), after a 7.56 mark in April. But if there is one glaring difference in the two months, it's in strikeouts. In April Hatcher struck out 15 of 38 batters faced (39.5%), but in May just two of 31 batters he faced have struck out.

We are talking about all of 14⅓ innings on the season here, so take these numbers with a grain of salt. But peripherally Hatcher is having a fine season. Despite his 6.91 ERA, his 17 strikeout, five walks and no home runs allowed give him a 2.23 FIP and a 3.58 xFIP.

But waiting for the numbers to even out isn't a luxury most relief pitchers have, nor does it make giving up actual runs any less annoying.

"I feel like every ball put in play is a hit off me, recently," Hatcher said. "A couple of those were poor pitches. But what's frustrating is when you execute your pitch and somehow the ball still finds the ground or the guy ends up on first."

Stripping away Hatcher's walks and strikeouts (he hasn't allowed a home run), he has allowed 44 balls to be hit into play this year, and 18 have dropped for a hit. That's a .409 batting average on balls in play, which is 10th highest among the 378 pitchers to have thrown at least 10 major league innings this season.

With runners on base, Hatcher's BABIP is .565 (13-for-23).

Mattingly keeps using Hatcher is important spots, hoping the tide will turn. Wednesday was the 10th time in 11 appearances in May that Hatcher was brought in in the eighth inning or later, and in 10 of those 12 games the Dodgers either had a lead or were tied.

Hatcher entered Wednesday with an above average leverage index of 1.113 (average is 1.0), measured by Baseball-Reference.

Wednesday was Hatcher's fourth loss of the season. No other relief pitcher on the team has more than one loss.

"When you're going out there and letting the team down every time, it's a big knock to your own confidence. You have 24 other guys depending on you," Hatcher said. "I feel like I'm a pretty hard worker. I try to make corrections, but it's just not working. I'm glad they have confidence in me, but I don't know why."

Up next

The Dodgers on their off day Thursday will fly to St. Louis, where a three-game weekend series against the Cardinals awaits. The battle of division leaders begins with Mike Bolsinger on the hill Friday night, facing John Lackey.

LOS ANGELES -- The Braves rallied for two runs against a wild Dodgers bullpen in the eighth inning to beat Los Angeles 3-2 on Wednesday night, avoiding a three-game sweep at Dodger Stadium.

Chris Hatcher opened the eighth inning in a 1-1 tie, but was done after just five pitches. He allowed a pop fly single to left center field by Andrelton Simmons and then walked pinch hitter Todd Cunningham on four pitches.

Adam Liberatore, Hatcher's replacement, got two outs and was close to escaping the jam, but with runners on the corners Liberatore uncorked a wild pitch to the backstop, forcing in a run while walking Freddie Freeman. Nick Markakis then drove a ground rule double into the left field corner that if it didn't bounce into the stands might have scored two runs instead of one.

Hatcher and Liberatore combined for 29 pitches in the eighth inning, 12 for strikes.

Alex Guerrero brought the Dodgers to within a run with a home run in the ninth inning, and the Dodgers put the tying runs on base. But closer Jason Grilli got out of the inning with no further damage for his 14th save. He got pinch hitter Alberto Callaspo, in his first game as a Dodger, to fly out to end it.

Alex Wood got the win for the Braves with seven strong innings, striking out six while allowing one run. He was pinch hit for in Atlanta's winning rally in the eighth inning.

Zack Greinke battled in the first, walking two and loading the bases with one out. But he was able to strike out Juan Uribe and A.J. Pierzynski to end the threat. Greinke struck out three in the inning but also needed 32 pitches to do it.

With one out in the third inning, Greinke allowed a solo home run to Cameron Maybin, but that was it. Greinke retired his final 11 batters faced, leaving after the sixth inning with 97 pitches and a season-high nine strikeouts.

"Zack after the first inning put him in a tough spot. But after that he was rolling. Without that, he probably goes seven tonight," manager Don Mattingly said. "No question Zack has been terrific this season."

Greinke has allowed five runs in five May starts but just one win to show for it, thanks in part to three total runs scored by the Dodgers with him in the game in his last four outings.

"It kind of goes in and out. My first six or eight games, we were getting like 10 runs a game," Greinke said."You can't spread it out perfectly. I'm sure it won't last forever."

Greinke also singled in the fifth inning with two outs, then stole second base. It was the first stolen base by a major league pitcher this season, and the fourth steal of Greinke's career. He has not been caught, and is 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts as a Dodger.

"You gotta be smart, and not really be scared to look terrible," Greinke said.

LOS ANGELES -- Juan Uribe's desire for playing time helped facilitate his ticket out of town, as he fell further down the Dodgers' depth chart at third base.

Uribe started 15 of the first 21 games of the year at third base for the Dodgers, and two of those six games he didn't start were because of hamstring tightness. That was in April.

But after a slow start at the plate by Uribe, May was a different story. He started just seven times in 25 games this month for the Dodgers, amassing only 30 plate appearances. On the season he was hitting just .247/.287/.309, production so low not even his defensive prowess could stave off his demotion.

"With how JT was playing and how Alex was playing, I know Donnie was very active in his communication with Juan about what's going on, and things were changing daily," Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. "Throughout the conversations, his agent reached out and said 'Juan wants to play'."

Justin Turner carried over his great 2014 campaign into 2015, and Alex Guerrero got off to a ridiculously hot start. They are hitting .287/.374/.529 and .313/.348/.687, respectively, with a combined 13 home runs and 11 doubles, and essentially pushed Uribe to a bench player.

"His playing time here had been down, and I knew through conversations with him he wanted to play more," manager Don Mattingly said. "When a guy's not happy, and he hasn't been happy with his for the last couple of weeks with his situation, then it's never good.

"Juan was getting to be a tougher fit."

Not a tough fit in the sense Uribe would be a disrupt the clubhouse.

"It was never something that was a distraction," Friedman explained. "He's too good a teammate for that."

Friedman said Alberto Callaspo was a better roster fit, which is probably true for the next few weeks or so, giving the Dodgers a left-handed bat off the bench who could spell time at multiple positions. Uribe was pretty much limited to third base only. Though frankly neither one has been anything close to an impact player this season.

But ultimately this was about clearing an eventual spot for Hector Olivera, who is still at Camelback Ranch in Arizona, getting ready and back in baseball shape before heading to Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. Though some time in June seems likely for Olivera's MLB arrival, Friedman said there is no real timetable just yet.

"He has the potential to be a middle-of-the-order bat. We're viewing him through the lens of what's right for Hector right now," Friedman said. "We're going to let his timeline dictate itself."

So for now, the Dodgers wait it out with Callaspo on the bench, and Uribe goes somewhere he will play more often, even with Chris Johnson back for the Braves.

"There was a lot of dialogue back and forth between me, Donnie and Juan," Friedman said. "We were involved in honest communication, and we knew exactly where Juan stood. It was all handled very professionally."

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers outfielder Scott Van Slyke is dealing with a back injury that will likely make him unavailable for Wednesday night's game. The Dodgers have been vague with the details, only to say the injury is minor and not one that would require a stint on the disabled list.

Van Slyke was not available on Tuesday after playing Monday night. He is not starting against left-hander Alex Wood on Tuesday, just the fourth time in 49 games against southpaw starters since the start of 2014 that Van Slyke didn't start.

"He had some back stuff going on the other day. We want to be a little careful with him," manager Don Mattingly said. "There are aspects he is available, and aspects that he's pretty much not."

The Dodgers are off Thursday, so holding Van Slyke out Wednesday would give him three straight days of rest.

The injury was serious enough for the Dodgers to recall outfielder Chris Heisey from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

"Slyke's been bothered by a little thing in his back. It's not big, but it's limiting," Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. "Being at 12 position players is hard enough, so just to get back to the more traditional 13 position players and 12 pitchers for the short term. We'll get through today, then see where we're at."

Heisey is starting in right field on Wednesday.

Kiké Hernandez, who has started all three outfield positions and at shortstop this season for the Dodgers, is also limited on Wednesday.

"He's got some little stuff going on too, so we have to watch him from the other day," Mattingly said. "He's a guy that's useable, but I'm trying to get him another day, with the off day Thursday."

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers on Wednesday recalled outfielder Chris Heisey from Triple-A Oklahoma City and designated Sergio Santos for assignment.

The move was made in advance of the six-player trade with the Braves getting announced, as the Dodgers needed to clear space on the 40-man roster to complete that deal.

This is Heisey's third stint with the Dodgers this season, earning a total of eight days of major league service time. That puts him at four years, 165 days of service time, seven days from accruing five full years. That distinction is important because once Heisey reaches five years of service time he has the right to refuse any minor league assignment.

Heisey, 30, is 1-for-5 with five walks in three games with the Dodgers this season, making two spot starts in center field and one in left. With Triple-A Oklahoma City this year, Heisey hit .234/.354/.574 with 19 RBI and 20 runs scored in 28 games, and a team-leading 10 home runs.

Santos, 31, had a 4.73 ERA and 4.41 FIP in 12 games with the Dodgers. The right-hander from Mater Dei struck out 15 and walked seven in 13⅓ innings. He allowed two home runs, both in the same game, on May 16 that saw him allow five of his seven runs this season.

Santos signed a minor league contract on Dec. 29, 2014 that pays him a $1 million base salary when in the majors, plus up to $3.05 million in potential bonuses. Santos already earned $150,000 for pitching in 10 games this season

The Dodgers will have 10 days to figure out what to do with Santos, who is now off the 40-man roster.

With Wednesday's moves, the Dodgers have 12 pitchers and 13 position players on the active roster.

Eric Stults was designated for assignment as part of deal.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers and Braves officially announced the six-player trade that has dominated our news cycle for most of the last 30 hours. The trade is as follows:

Juan Uribe and Chris Withrow go to the Braves. Withrow is on the 60-day disabled list, recovering from Tommy John surgery he had in June 2014.

The Dodgers get infielder Alberto Callaspo plus pitchers Ian Thomas, Eric Stults and Juan Jaime.

The Dodgers designated Stults for assignment. He is making $2 million this season, so with 131 days remaining in the season the Dodgers are on the hook for approximately $1,431,694 for the rest of the season.

Thomas was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, and Jaime - who is not on the 40-man roster - was assigned to extended spring training. We will find out more information this afternoon but my guess is either the Dodgers will work on some mechanical fixes for Jaime, who has nine walks and seven strikeouts in his 30 minor league batters faced this season, or they will try to convert him back to starting, something he hasn't done since 2009.

Callaspo will be in uniform for the Dodgers on Wednesday night against his old team, wearing No. 5. Uribe's old number. Ice cold.

The Dodgers will save roughly $1.75 million in salaries in the trade, and factoring in their 40-percent luxury tax status the savings are roughly $2.45 million. Callaspo was also paid to accept the deal after initially rejecting it, though that money was paid by the Braves, per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The Dodgers in a separate move also recalled outfielder Chris Heisey from Triple-A Oklahoma City and designated Sergio Santos for assignment, clearing the extra spot needed for this trade to go through. More on that move in a moment.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers look for their second home sweep of the Braves in two years, and send Zack Greinke to the mound in the homestand finale on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.

Greinke has gotten fantastic results so far this season, going 5-1 with a 1.48 ERA, with 49 strikeouts and 12 walks in 61 innings. He has pitched a quality start in each of his nine starts. Since 1914, only three Dodgers have had longer quality start streaks to open a season — Claude Osteen (12 in 1971), Orel Hershiser (10 in 1994) and Ismael Valdes (10 in 1996).

In May Greinke has averaged over seven innings per start, has 22 strikeouts against only five walks, and has allowed four runs in four starts.

Greinke has allowed exactly one run in each of those four starts. The only longer Dodgers streaks of starts with exactly one run allowed since 1914 were by Kevin Brown (six in 2003), Don Sutton (five in 1980) and Brad Penny (five in 2007).

Alex Wood starts for the Braves on Wednesday, just the seventh time in 46 games the Dodgers will have faced a left-handed starting pitcher.

Wednesday also happens to be Dodgers coaster giveaway night at Dodger Stadium, with an unintentionally opponent-friendly slogan (h/t Sarah Wexler):

When told on Tuesday that his advertising slogan matched Wednesday's starting pitcher, Scott Van Slyke just laughed.

"That's quite a coincidence," he said.
