LOS ANGELES -- The offense was the story in Sunday's Dodgers rout of the Giants, but Brett Anderson quietly continued his quietly solid season in the win.

The oft-injured left-hander, who averaged just 52 innings over the previous four seasons, has been a picture of health in 2015 for the Dodgers, and quite reliable in the rotation.

Anderson made his 14th start of the season on Sunday, and he's up to 82 innings on the season, his most since 2010 and 2011, respectively. But the left-hander's focus hasn't been on surpassing personal benchmarks, but rather focusing on 2015, which has led to a successful campaign.

"I just take it one start at a time, as cliche as it might sound," Anderson said. "I get myself ready and do the best I can to go out there every five or six days to give us a chance to win. For the most part, I've done that.

"At the end of the season I can look back and say I made X amount of starts and pitched X amount of innings compared to what i've done in the past, but at this point I'm in that mode to go out there and give us a chance to win."

Anderson has a 3.29 ERA in his 14 starts, and seven quality starts in his last 10 outings. Since May 1 his ERA is 2.60, and he has averaged 6.23 innings per start during that span.

On the season, Anderson's ground ball rate of 67.3 percent, tops in the majors. On Sunday he induced 11 ground ball outs, none bigger than by Matt Duffy, who in a 5-1 game with the bases loaded in the third inning and Buster Posey on deck, hit a first-pitch ground ball to Jimmy Rollins at shortstop for an inning-ending double play.

"We knew he was going to be aggressive, and we weren't going to give him anything to hit. We were going to stay soft on him. Basically their whole team with runners in scoring position is aggressive. Brett has been getting a lot of outs on changeups, so why not? His changeup kind of looks like his fastball," catcher Yasmani Grandal explained. "My thought process was to show him something that looks like the fastball and get him to roll over."

Ankled

Anderson also tweeted a picture of the bruise, and also posted it on Instagram:

Anderson allowed one run in six innings for his third win of the season. He needed only 85 pitches and likely could have pitched longer, but the big lead and Duffy's first-inning ground ball off Anderson's ankle - a single that turned into a 1-5-4 putout when Duffy tried to take an extra base after the ball ricocheted into foul territory near third base - made the decision to remove Anderson that much easier.

"He was fine. It was just a matter of trying to save him some bullets. He has been going deeper in games for us and he said he could have kept going," manager Don Mattingly said. "We didn't want to get that [ankle] to get extended too far, where he might get sore and change anything."

Anderson after the game said his ankle was fine.

"It didn't really swell up too much. I got an ace wrap to try to prevent swelling with the plane ride," Anderson said, then joked, "There's a bruise, but I've already got cankles so it doesn't make it look too much worse."

Up next

The Dodgers move on to Chicago, beginning a four-game series at Wrigley Field on Monday night. Clayton Kershaw starts the series opener, with the Cubs sending fellow southpaw Tsuyoshi Wada to the mound.

Mattingly said Rollins will get a planned day off on Monday, despite five hits in the shortstop's last two games. We already know Andre Ethier will get the day off against the lefty, and It's a safe bet that A.J. Ellis will again catch Kershaw, especially after Grandal started the last four games behind the plate.

Whether we see Justin Turner in the lineup remains to be seen. Turner has a home run in three straight games, but has also never started four straight days all season. The general plan has been for Turner to start three days, get one day off, then start another two to three days, then get another day off.

"I still have to be careful with him. That's why I tried to buy him a couple innings tonight," Mattingly said. "He's swinging the bat good."

He did exit Sunday night with a big lead, getting the final two innings off. So maybe Turner could return to the lineup on Monday in Chicago.

LOS ANGELES -- It only counted for one win in the standings, but the Dodgers got several games worth of frustration out of their system with a 10-2 drubbing of the Giants on Sunday night to capture the series finale at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers pounded out 16 hits on the night, tied for their third-most on the season, and scored more runs on Sunday than in their last five games against the Giants (seven runs), all losses.

The Dodgers tied a season high with four home runs, and all were hit against Yusmeiro Petit, who pitched in relief. That's because the Dodgers chased Tim Lincecum in the second inning, tallying five runs against his four outs recorded. The 1⅓-inning was the shortest start of his career, and the shortest start against the Dodgers this season.

Five different Dodgers reached base at least three times — Yasiel Puig, Justin Turner, Adrian Gonzalez, Yasmani Grandal and Jimmy Rollins — the third time this season they have done that, along with May 7 and May 12.

"It felt like the last couple days the at-bats were getting better," manager Don Mattingly said. "Hopefully this is just a carry-over and will be a springboard for us."

Puig scored twice, walked and singled twice, with his offensive night highlighted by a 10-pitch at-bat against Lincecum in the second that ended with a two-run single up the middle. Since his activation from the disabled list on June 6, Puig is hitting .339/.393/.518 in 14 games.

Turner singled and walked, then in the fifth hit a two-run shot to dead center for his ninth home run of the year. It marked three consecutive games with a home run for Turner, the longest streak of his career.

Gonzalez entered the game in a 6-for-54 (.111) slump, but singled twice then homered in the fourth inning, his 12th long ball of the season and first home run since June 2.

Grandal beat the shift with a bunt single between Lincecum and third base, then homered in the third and fourth innings. Grandal is the first Dodgers catcher with two home runs and a bunt single in the same game since Roy Campanella on Aug. 30, 1955.

"I was batting a little bit of back spasms for a couple days. Today was the first day I felt good," Grandal said. "I was just happy I was able to swing."

It was the second two-homer game of the season for Grandal, who is hitting a robust .276/.386/.494 on the year.

"I feel like at any point in time for one game I can go off," Grandal said. "I'll tell you one thing - when I do feel good, I'm going to go out there and give you at-bats. I'm not going to give up. I'm going to make sure you get those three strikes."

But how often does a catcher feel good, especially Grandal, who has started 16 games behind the plate in the last 19 days?

"As a catcher you never feel good," he said. "You just have to give 100 percent of what you got on that day."

Rollins singled twice and doubled, going 5-for-8 in the final two games of the series.

All of that offense was more than enough for Brett Anderson, who allowed one run in six innings while inducing 11 ground ball outs. Sunday was Anderson's 14th start of the season, his most since starting 19 games for the A's in 2011, and his 82 innings so far this year are his most since amassing 83⅓ innings in 2010.

The Dodgers end their series still in first place in the National League West, by 1½ games over the Giants.

"You don't want to have that bad taste in your mouth," Anderson said. "Hopefully this will be the catalyst for our long road trip."

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers try to salvage one weekend game against the Giants on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium, and will do so with Alex Guerrero starting in left field.

It is just the second start in 11 games for Guerrero, and his first start in the field since June 9.

"We're hoping for him to do his thing," said manager Don Mattingly.

Guerrero has done his thing so far this season, hitting .282/.311/.597, and despite just 132 plate appearances in 69 team games ranks third on the Dodgers in both home runs (10) and RBI (29).

With the return of Yasiel Puig and Scott Van Slyke from the disabled list, the opportunities for Guerrero in left field have dried up, and the club prefers the switch-hitting Alberto Callaspo defensively more than Guerrero to back up Justin Turner at third.

Mattingly said he hasn't had any conversations with Guerrero about playing time other than earlier in the season.

"He knows we know where he stands and how he feels about it," Mattingly said. "He handled himself like a true pro. You have to speak up for youself when things aren't how you like them or want them. But he was very respectful that we have a job to do and have to make decisions that are best for all, and that there are more people than just him. The way he handled himself was great."

Though he hasn't started often — Guerrero started just three times in the last 15 games before Sunday — he has been a valuable weapon off the bench, hitting .348 (8-for-23) in games he hasn't started, with four home runs and 13 RBI in those situations.

Guerrero starts Sunday night in place of Andre Ethier, who is 2-for-18 (.111) with a walk in his last six games.

"As much as anything, with Dre, we wanted to wanted to give him not only today but tomorrow too with the lefty, give him a couple days. He seemed to be fighting it lately, getting a little frustrated," Mattingly said. "We wanted to give him a little rest. We feel like we have pushed him as hard as anybody as far as playing time.

Ethier has played 50 of the last 53 games, including 44 starts. He won't start Monday in Chicago either, with left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada starts the opener of a four-game series for the Cubs.

After getting a lower left leg contusion from a hit by pitch on Saturday, Nori Aoki is not starting for the Giants on Sunday. Instead, Brandon Belt shifts to left field with Justin Maxwell in right field, with Buster Posey at first base and Andrew Susac catching Tim Lincecum.

Angel Pagan moves to leadoff for San Francisco, with third baseman Matt Duffy shifting to the three spot.

LOS ANGELES --The Dodgers try to salvage a game against the Giants on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium, which would also keep Los Angeles in first place for another two days. Wins have been hard to come by against San Francisco this season, at a pace that is nearing record lows since both teams moved west in 1958.

The clubs won't face each other for another 10 weeks, but have two series remaining down the stretch - Aug. 31 to Sept. 2 at Dodger Stadium, then Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 at AT&T Park, where the Dodgers are 0-6 this season.

The Giants have won nine of 11 meetings with the Dodgers this season, and while that is obviously less than ideal for Los Angeles so far it hasn't lifted the Giants above the Dodgers. Coming into play Sunday, the Dodgers (38-31) lead the Giants (38-32) by a half-game in the National League West.

It's almost as if there is more to the season than games against the Giants.

"It's something that we have to be able to change. At the end, it's all about us trying to win a division, put games together and right our own ship. Knowing that they have a good club. There are other good clubs in our division, and we have to win a lot of games to get to where we want to go," manager Don Mattingly said Saturday. "In a sense it's probably going to go through those guys, and we're going to have to find a way to get it done."

At 2-9 with eight games left against the Giants, the Dodgers will try to avoid their worst seasonal record against their chief rivals since moving to California.

In 1958, both teams' first year out west, the Giants beat the Dodgers in 16 of their 22 matchups. That was back when there were only eight teams in each league, and everyone played each other 22 times. But since 1963, the two teams have faced each other between 18-19 times in most full seasons, except for 1993-2000 when three divisions, interleague play and a balanced schedule sat their matchup frequency reduced to 12-13 times per year.

In those years of 18-19 games between the two teams, the most the Dodgers have lost to the Giants in any on season is 13 games - done in 1967, 1969, 1983 and 2003.

In Brooklyn, the Dodgers were also 6-16 against the Giants in 1937, 1912 and 1908; were 3-9 (.250) in 1897, 5-16 (.238) in 1911 and 3-11 (.214) in 1898. Their worst all-time record against the Giants was 3-19 (.136) in 1904.

Brett Anderson will try to reverse this season's trend for the Dodgers on Sunday night, with Tim Lincecum starting for the Giants on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball.

Saturday, 4:15 p.m. (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Carlos Frias has allowed one run in 7⅓ innings this season against the Giants, in one start and one relief appearance. Tim Hudson allowed no runs in 6⅓ innings in his one start this season against the Dodgers, beating Frias 2-0 on May 19 in San Francisco.

Sunday, 5:08 p.m. (ESPN)

Brett Anderson has a 2.68 ERA in his seven quality starts, but is 0-3. He has a 4.66 ERA in his other six starts, and is 2-1 in those games. Tim Lincecum has started thrice against the Dodgers this season, allowing one run in 13 innings in two wins in San Francisco, and allowing four runs and eight hits in four innings in a loss at Dodger Stadium on April 27
