Brett Anderson did it all, striking out 10 as the Dodgers cruised to a 7-1 win over the Marlins on Friday night at Marlins Park in Miami.

The 10 strikeouts matched a career high for Anderson, who did the same with Oakland on two occasions - April 7, 2013 vs. Houston, and Sept. 18, 2009 vs. Cleveland.

Anderson allowed a run in the first inning that was essentially the platonic ideal of Dee Gordon. The former Dodger reached base on an infield chopper hit maybe 65 feet up the first base line, then stole second base and scored on two ground balls.

But that 1-0 Marlins lead was quickly wiped out, when Adrian Gonzalez singled to open the top of the second inning, followed by a two-run home run by Scott Van Slyke, 4-for-15 (.267) with two home runs and two doubles since his return from the disabled list.

Anderson lasted seven innings for the fourth time in his last seven starts, allowing just the one run. He allowed five hits, walked one, and got eight ground ball outs. He allowed one fly ball to the outfield, a deep drive by Marcell Ozuna in the sixth inning that was ran down by Joc Pederson in center field, then proceeded to strikeout the final four batters he faced.

The left-hander even helped himself thwart a potential third-inning rally by picking off both catcher J.T. Realmuto and Gordon, after each had singled.

It was the second game this season for Anderson with two pickoffs, the first Dodger to do that dating back to at least 1914. Anderson is also the only Dodgers pitcher in at least 102 years with two pickoffs in the same inning.

Anderson leads the majors with five pickoffs on the season.

But that wasn't all for Anderson, who singled home a run in the fifth inning to cap a three-run rally. It was the fourth career hit for Anderson (in 39 at-bats) and his fourth career RBI, but it was his first single. His first three career hits were doubles, including one earlier this season.

Anderson got the win, the first time he won back-to-back starts since September 2-8, 2012. With his seven innings on Friday Anderson has 89 innings on the season, surpassing his total for 2013-2014 combined (88 innings), and his most innings in a single season since pitching 112⅓ innings in 2010.

In his last 11 starts, Anderson has allowed two or fewer runs nine times, with a 2.47 ERA during that span, with 51 strikeouts and 20 walks in 69⅓ innings.

Notes

Howie Kendrick was 4-for-5 with an RBI, tying his season high with four hits. Kendrick's other four-hit game came at Dodger Stadium on May 12, also against the Marlins, against whom he is 10-for-18 (.556).

Alex Guerrero was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, his first multi-hit game since May 19.

Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with a walk, his fifth straight start with at least one hit, hitting 8-for-20 (.400) during that span (including his pinch-hit appearance on Thursday).

Pedro Baez, activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, pitched a scoreless ninth in his first major league appearance since May 13. Baez struck out three, and Adam Liberatore struck out three, giving the Dodgers 16 strikeouts on the night, tied for their second-most in a game this season.

The last 10 outs of the game recorded by Dodgers pitchers were strikeouts.

The Marlins have lost five straight games and eight of their last nine.

Up next

The Dodgers have turned those frowns upside down, now winners of three straight, heading into the weekend with their best two pitchers on the mound against a team that is circling the drain. Clayton Kershaw starts on Saturday afternoon, a 1:10 p.m. PT start, with Tom Koehler on the mound for Miami.

Scott Van Slyke gets the start in right field in place of Puig on Friday night against the left-hander Justin Nicolino. Van Slyke is hitting .276/.417/.448 in all of 36 plate appearances against southpaws this season.

Alex Guerrero starts in left field.

A.J. Ellis gets the start at catcher, which is noteworthy for a few reasons. He started Thursday's finale in Chicago, which makes this the first time Ellis has started back-to-back games this season when Yasmani Grandal was on the active roster. When Grandal was on the seven-day concussion disabled list, Ellis caught five of six games, including four straight.

This also means that, unless he is hurt, Grandal will catch Clayton Kershaw on Saturday, snapping a string of seven straight Kershaw-Ellis pairings. Grandal has caught three of Kershaw's 15 starts this season.

The Dodgers are nearing the end of 20 games in 20 days, and with Saturday's 4 p.m. EDT local start close enough to a day game, this is essentially a night game followed by a day game, a situation this season the Dodgers have usually split up the catching starts, so Ellis was going to start one of the weekend games anwyay.

Ellis in his last 10 games, including nine starts, is hitting .292/.433/.375 with two doubles and six walks.

The only Marlins in the lineup to face Brett Anderson more than two plate appearances are Jeff Baker (1-for-4 with a double and a walk), Giancarlo Stanton (0-for-3) and Christian Yelich (0-for-3).

The Dodgers activated relief pitcher Pedro Baez off the disabled list on Friday before the opening game of their series against the Marlins in Miami. Baez missed six weeks with a strained right pectoral muscle.

To make room on the roster, left-hander Ian Thomas was optioned back to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Baez pitched three scoreless innings on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City, allowing two hits while striking out two. The right-hander last pitched on Tuesday.

Baez this season was a huge part of the strong start by the Dodgers bullpen, with 22 strikeouts and just three walks in 15⅓ innings in his 15 appearances. Baez put up a 1.76 ERA and also stranded all 13 of his inherited runners this season.

His last game for the Dodgers was May 13, against the Marlins at Dodger Stadium.

Thomas was recalled by the Dodgers on Monday, though because of travel delays and mishaps wasn't really available until Tuesday. At any rate, he didn't pitch during this stint with the Dodgers. He is 3-0 with a 5.30 ERA in four games this season with Triple-A Oklahoma City, including three starts, with 14 strikeouts and five walks in 18⅔ innings, including allowing six total runs in his last three starts.

Baez was one of four Dodgers relievers rehabbing in the minors last weekend. Joel Peralta was activated on Monday and has pitched the last three days, while both Brandon League and Paco Rodriguez remain on their respective rehab assignments.

The Dodgers make their first trip to the Eastern time zone with this weekend's series against the Marlins in Miami. The club was 12-13 on Eastern time in 2014, including losing two of three games in Miami. In 2013, they went 16-14 in that time zone.

They face a Marlins team that has lost four straight and seven of their last eight games. The club was 16-22 when manager Mike Redmond was fired, with a minus-8 run differential. Under suit Dan Jennings, the Marlins are 14-22, with a minus-22 run differential.

Brett Anderson gets the call for the Dodgers in the opener, with six quality starts in his last seven outings, and a 2.60 ERA since May 1.

The Marlins lead the National League in OPS, slugging percentage and batting average against left-handed pitchers this year, hitting .271/.325/.449. The Dodgers rank 11th, hitting .240/.311/.369 against southpaws.

Justin Nicolino starts for the Marlins, six days after pitching seven scoreless innings in his major league debut. Combining the minors and his one major league start, Nicolino has held left-handed batters to hit .238/.287/.275 against him.

The Marlins are 8-8 in games against left-handed starting pitchers this season, while the Dodgers are 5-8. This is the first time the Dodgers will have faced a left-handed starting pitcher on consecutive days this season.

The Dodgers are 4-7 in the first game of a road series this year, with the only wins coming in San Diego and Denver (twice each). Overall, they are 14-20 on the road, but have outscored their opponents 128-122 away from home.

Giancarlo Stanton leads the majors with 27 home runs and 67 RBI, hitting .269/.350/.615 on the season. He has 12 home runs in June, and is on pace for a whopping 59 homers on the season. He has seven home runs in his last 11 home games.

The Dodgers shift their road show to Miami for three games, facing a Marlins team that has lost three straight and six of their last seven contests heading into Thursday night's game against St. Louis. Here is the schedule and probable starting pitchers for this weekend.

Friday, 4:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

If Brett Anderson can record five outs on Friday, he will have his most innings pitched in a season since 2010. Justin Nicolino made his major league debut last Saturday, with seven scoreless innings against the Reds. The Dodgers will try to hang the first run(s) on Nicolino, the first time the Dodgers will have faced left-handed starting pitchers in back-to-back games this season.

Saturday, 1:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Clayton Kershaw is 3-1 with a 2.36 ERA in four career starts in Miami, but last started on the road against the Marlins in 2013, when he pitched eight scoreless innings. Opponents this year are hitting .297/.365/.534 on the road against Tom Koehler, but at Marlins Park the right-hander has held opponents to batting just .193/.263/.276. Koehler allowed one run in six innings in a no-decision at Dodger Stadium on May 11.

Sunday, 10:10 a.m. (SportsNet LA)

Zack Greinke has allowed no runs over 13 innings in his last two outings, one of five Dodgers pitchers in the last 102 seasons with two straight scoreless starts without a win. Dating back to at least 1914, no Dodgers has had three consecutive starts with no runs allowed and no wins.

Jose Urena is in line to start on regular four days rest on Sunday, but the 23-year-old right-hander has been underwhelming this season with a 4.34 ERA, 4.90 FIP and just 15 strikeouts with his 13 walks in 37 innings, a strikeout rate of just 9.68 percent that ranks 229th among the 230 major league pitchers this year with at least 30 innings.
