LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers will call up Eric Surkamp on Monday night for the opener of a four-game series against the Phillies at Dodger Stadium. Surkamp will likely start, though manager Don Mattingly was bizarrely secretive about that detail after Sunday's game.

"Surkamp is coming up," Mattingly said.

Is he coming up to start Monday?

"I'm not sure about that," Mattingly said.

Mattingly did confirm that Brett Anderson would not move up a day to start Monday, on what would be four days rest. Instead, Anderson starts Tuesday.

"We're just not ready to announce [Monday's starter]," Mattingly said, when pressed. "It's not that big a secret."

The left-hander Surkamp was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday for Triple-A Oklahoma City. The Dodgers need a Monday starter to replace of Carlos Frias, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday with lower back tightness.

Surkamp, who turns 28 on July 16, was acquired from the White Sox on May 22 for Blake Smith. a Surkamp was 4-2 with a 4.50 ERA in seven games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, including six starts. But after relieving with Triple-A Charlotte his first two outings with OKC were three innings each in an effort to stretch him out. In his last five outings for Oklahoma City, Surkamp is 4-0 with a 2.89 ERA, with 22 strikeouts and five walks in 28 innings.

He pitched in the major leagues in parts of three seasons, in 2011 and 2013 with the Giants and in 2014 with the White Sox. He is 4-3 with a 6.20 major league ERA in 42 games, including seven starts, with 33 strikeouts and 30 walks in 53⅔ innings.

Surkamp's last major league start July 23, 2013 with San Francisco, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 2⅔ innings in a loss to the Reds.

The Dodgers will need to make a corresponding move to add space for Surkamp on the 40-man roster, which will likely be transferring Paco Rodriguez to the 60-day disabled list. Rodriguez, who last pitched May 29, had left elbow surgery on Thursday and is expected to be out until September.

A relief pitcher will likely be optioned to make room for Surkamp on the active roster, with Daniel Coulombe the most likely to be sent down for what would be a sixth time this season. Coulombe pitched the final two innings and threw 28 pitches on Sunday against the Mets.

Sean O'Sullivan starts for the Phillies on Monday night.

LOS ANGELES -- The top of the Mets batting order had a field day on Sunday, and Steven Matz had his way with the Dodgers in his second major league start, giving New York an easy 8-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

Leadoff man Curtis Granderson was 2-for-5 with a double and a walk.

No. 2 hitter Daniel Murphy was 3-for-4 with a walk and a hit by pitch, tying a career-high by reaching base five times.

Cleanup man Wilmer Flores set a career-high with four hits, including two doubles, driving in three runs.

All that spelled trouble for Mike Bolsinger, who needed 101 pitches to get through five innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits, the latter a new season high.

Bolsinger has averaged just 4.73 innings over his last five starts, never lasting longer than 5⅓ innings during that span.

Matz was quite impressive in just his second major league start, allowing just two singles and two walks in his six innings while striking out eight.

The Mets' fourth-inning rally gave them breathing room, and including five hits and three runs during the frame. One of the hits was a ground ball by Juan Lagares headed toward second baseman Howie Kendrick for an easy out, but instead struck umpire Dan Bellino, by rule (MLB rule 5.09 (f) if you were wondering) a single and a dead ball.

But that wasn't even the most costly ball to strike another human for the Dodgers on Sunday. That would be the first-inning hit by pitch of Adrian Gonzalez, struck in the right hand by a Matz fastball. Gonzalez played three more innings in the field before leaving with a right hand contusion.

Gonzalez did not get X-rays on the hand, which was still swollen after the game. He expects to play on Monday.

Lagares, who was awarded a single on that ground ball, was living right on Sunday. He lofted a fly ball to right center field that should have ended the seventh inning. But instead, Yasiel Puig lost the ball in the sun and overran it, allowing the ball to drop untouched for a two-run triple.

Notes

Yasmani Grandal entered the game on a double switch in the top of the eighth inning and played the final two innings at first base. It was his first time at the position as a Dodger, after playing 37 games, including 33 starts, at first base for the Padres in 2014. "If the ball gets hit to you, you just have to keep it in front of you."

Mets pitching held the Dodger to five runs and 16 hits during the three game series.

New York's 15 hits on Sunday matched the second-most allowed by the Dodgers this season. San Diego pounded out 20 hits against them on May 24.

Flores entered the series with three hits in his previous 23 at-bats. He had at least three hits in all three weekend games at Dodger Stadium, finishing the series 10-for-13 with five RBI.

Matz, who was 3-for-3 last Sunday in his major league debut, was 0-for-3 against the Dodgers, but one of the outs was a run-scoring ground ball, giving him five RBI in two major league games.

Logan Verrett pitched the final three innings for the Mets, earning the first three-inning save at Dodger Stadium since Jamey Wright on May 31, 2014. It was Verrett's first major league save.

Gonzalez expects to start on Monday.

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez left Sunday's game in the fourth inning with a right hand contusion, three innings after getting hit by a pitch from Mets starter Steven Matz.

Gonzalez was hit on the right hand by a pitch from Matz with two outs in the first inning. Gonzalez stayed in the game at first base through the top of the fourth inning. Alex Guerrero pinch hit for Gonzalez to start the bottom of the fourth, then remained in the game in left field, with Scott Van Slyke moving from left to first base.

"The knob of the bat wasn't letting me swing. They told me I could get a different bat and hold it a little differently. At least with my bat, the way I hold it normally it wasn't working," Gonzalez said. "They said there's no need to go out there and try and do something different, just to go inside and let it calm down."

Gonzalez said there was no need for X-rays on his hand, which was swollen after the game.

He expects to play on Monday, "Unless for some reason tomorrow it gets worse."

Gonzalez homered in the first two games of the series and is hitting .291/.366/.518 with 15 home runs, 23 doubles and 50 RBI in 2015. Sunday marked the fourth time he has been hit by a pitch this season.

On the season, Gonzalez leads the Dodgers with 76 starts in 83 games, and is second with 79 games played and third with 653⅓ defensive innings.

From 2006-2014, Gonzalez averaged 159 games and 156 starts per season, with a low of 156 games and 149 starts during that span.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers placed pitcher Carlos Frias on the disabled list with lower back tightness on Sunday before their series finale against the Mets, and recalled left-handed relief pitcher Daniel Coulombe from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Frias said he first felt back tightness on May 19 in San Francisco, but it was manageable. It resurfaced during his last inning in Chicago on June 25, then was at its worst on June 30 in Arizona, when he left after five innings.

"It doesn't hurt other than when I'm on the hill trying to throw very hard," Frias said.

Frias had two more scheduled starts before the All-Star break, Monday and Saturday.

"We think he probably would have been ready for the start right before the break, but you can't really afford that with a starter to miss a start," said manager Don Mattingly.

The concern was that Frias might alter his delivery and get hurt as a result.

"It didn't start as anything that was painful but it was uncomfortable. The doctor advised me the more I kept pitching with the discomfort, the worse it was going to get," Frias explained. "If I continued to pitch that way, the doctor said it could affect my arm because it could compromise the mechanics."

Frias estimated that he would throw a bullpen session during or just after the All-Star break, then face live hitters during batting practice, then would need on rehab start before returning.

"We're not that concerned because there was nothing structurally wrong or any problems with back. It was more tightness," Matttingly said. "It got better, but it hasn't gotten to the point where he can just throw without changing anything."

Monday starter

Mattingly was peppered with questions about who would fill in for Frias on Monday, and outside of ruling some pitchers out we are still playing a guessing game. The best guess is that it will be someone currently not on the 40-man roster.

"It's a big system. There are lots of options. Lots of guys who aren't on the roster are options," Mattingly said. "We'll start somebody tomorrow. We won't forfeit."

Mattingly said he would prefer not to start reliever Juan Nicasio in what would essentially be a bullpen game, that he preferred a starter who could throw 90-100 pitches. Mattingly did rule out for Monday a Brandon Beachy, who is slated to start for Oklahoma City on his fifth rehab start.

Zach Lee, who pitched five scoreless innings in a rehab start for the AZL Dodgers on Wednesday, was also ruled out. Mattingly said Lee's next rehab start will be with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga.

Ian Thomas threw 101 pitches on Thursday in Triple-A, so he is ruled out pitching on three days rest on Monday. Joe Wieland has been on the disabled list since June 24 with a lower extremity injury, and though he is nearing a return he was also ruled out by Mattingly. "We have to be careful with him," Mattingly said.

Others who can be ruled out for Monday include Scott Baker, placed on the DL with a groin injury on Saturday; David Huff, who is with Team USA in preparation for next weekend's Pan-Am Games; Trevor Cahill, who last pitched on June 7 and last started on April 26; Jose De Leon, who started Saturday night for Double-A Tulsa; Deck McGuire, who started Saturday night for OKC; and Chris Anderson, who started Sunday for Tulsa.

Names to watch include Eric Surkamp, if he is scratched from his scheduled Sunday night start for Oklahoma City, Eric Stults, who threw 63 pitches in five innings on Thursday and would technically be on three days rest Monday, or Jeremy Kehrt, slated to start Monday for Double-A Tulsa.

The person who starts Monday won't necessarily also start on Saturday, so if Beachy, for instance, is more stretched out by the weekend, he could be a candidate as well, with a reliever coming up for the four games in between.

"You know how we use our roster," Mattingly said. "We'll try to use that spot."

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers will try for a third straight series win on Sunday when they host the Mets on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

The lineup hasn't been posted yet but Yasiel Puig will presumably be in right field, especially against Steven Matz, a left-hander making his second big league start.

The subject of Puig's power, more specifically the lack thereof, was broached again on Saturday before the game. Puig doubled on Saturday and on the season is hitting .287/.378/.457 with a .365 wOBA, a 133 OPS+ and 137 wRC+, which is still quite valuable. Nobody is disputing that.

But the lack of home runs is striking.

Puig in May 2014 won National League Player of the Month honors for the second time in his career after hitting a whopping .398/.492/.731 with eight home runs and 25 RBI in 27 games.

But since then, the outfielder has eight home runs and 39 RBI in 132 games and 559 plate appearances, hitting .274/.360/.421, still valuable but missing the wow factor that was so prevalent in Puig's first 12 months in the majors.

"Home runs are not something I really worry about with him," manager Don Mattingly said on Saturday. "He's more of a guy that should be center field, right center-type hitter. That fits to his strengths. Him trying to pull home runs doesn't really fit to his strengths. That will develop over time."

Mattingly said Puig's home runs tend to come in bunches. Those bunches were a lot more prevalent when Puig hit 30 home runs in his first 155 major league games, through the end of May 2014.

But he has gone 20 games and 85 plate appearances since his last home run, hit on June 10 against Arizona.

The Dodgers are back home beginning Friday night, hosting the Mets for the first time in 2015 and playing New York for the first of two series in July. Here is a look at the weekend schedule and probable starting pitchers for the three games at Dodger Stadium.

Friday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, ESPN)

Clayton Kershaw has double-digit strikeouts in five of his seven home starts, including each of his last four starts at Dodger Stadium. Kershaw is 4-2 with a 2.31 ERA in seven home starts this year, with 70 strikeouts and nine walks in 46⅔ innings. Noah Syndergaard has been pretty solid in his first nine major league starts, with 53 strikeouts and only 10 walks in 52⅔ innings to go with a 3.59 ERA. Syndergard is tops in baseball with his 96.9-mph fastball average among pitchers with at least 40 innings this season.

The ESPN broadcast, with Jon Sciambi on play-by-play with analysts Rick Sutcliffe and Doug Glanville, is a full national telecast, and will not be blacked out in the Los Angeles market.

Saturday, 4:15 p.m. (Fox)

Matt Harvey is third in baseball in fastball speed, with an average of 95.9 mph. He has also allowed two total runs in his last three starts, over 19⅔ innings. Zack Greinke brings a streak of 20⅔ scoreless innings into his Saturday start, having allowed 20 total runs in 16 starts all season.

Sunday, 1:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Mike Bolsinger gutted through four scoreless innings but had to leave early thanks to eating some bad oysters in Miami, but that was the third time in four starts he failed to complete five innings, averaging 4⅔ innings during that span. Steven Matz makes his second major league start in the series finale, and his first road start. The left-hander did it all in his major league debut, allowing two runs in 7⅔ innings against the Reds last Sunday, and also went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI.
