The Dodgers have won six straight series against the Padres, dating back to 2014, and are 11-5 against San Diego in 2015.

A three-run throwing error by relief pitcher Nick Vincent blew the game wide open, giving the Dodgers a 5-1 win over the Padres on Sunday afternoon at Petco Park in San Diego.

With their 11th win in their last 13 games, the Dodgers maintained their 7½-game lead in the National League West, and lowered their magic number to clinch the division to 19.

The Dodgers threatened all day but couldn't seem to scratch more than a couple runs together in the series finale. They were 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position, and two of the hits didn't even score a run.

So up 2-1 in the seventh inning, two-out singles by Adrian Gonzalez and Justin Turner loaded the bases for Andre Ethier, who hit a dribbler up the first base line. Vincent fielded the ball but had to throw the ball over Ethier to get the out at first base; the throw was not only over Ethier but over the head of Wil Myers at first base as well.

As the ball scrambled into the right field corner, all three runners scored, giving the Dodgers some cushion and reaching the magical five-run barrier.

The Dodgers are 49-7 (.875) when scoring five or more runs in a game this season.

For starters

Both starting pitchers had trouble with command, especially early, but found a way to settle in.

The Dodgers scored a run off Andrew Cashner in the first inning without a hit, thanks to two walks, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly, the latter by Andre Ethier.

The Dodgers put runners in scoring position in the second, fourth and fifth innings but failed to score. In the sixth inning Turner doubled and Ethier followed with a single to left, the Dodgers' first hit with runners in scoring position all day, but Turner thought the ball might be caught by Jedd Gyorko at shortstop and didn't even advance to third on the play.

But the Dodgers were able to push that go-ahead run across in the sixth against Cashner. Turner advanced to third when Corey Seager just missed his first major league home run, flying out to the wall in center field, then scored on a single to left, generously off the glove of Justin Upton.

Ellis had two hits and a walk, and has reached base by hit or walk in 21 of his last 22 starts.

Turner was 2-for-4, his first multi-hit game since Aug. 14. He was 8-for-64 in between multi-hit games.

Brett Anderson also loaded the bases in the first inning, but with two outs and got out of the jam. He walked a season-high four, but the only run he allowed was a home run by Gyorko in the third inning on a changeup that missed location.

Anderson struck out four for the win, but left early in the sixth inning with a left leg cramp. The Dodgers say he is day-to-day.

Sixth sense

After the Dodgers grabbed the lead again in the top of the sixth inning, the Dodgers infield defense made sure to keep it that way in the bottom of the inning, at the expense of the Upton brothers.

With one out, Justin Upton had designs on a single up the middle, but Turner — in his first start at second base since May 8 — made a fantastic play to rob him.

Then with runners on first and second base with two outs later in the inning, pinch hitter Melvin Upton Jr. hit a smash off the glove a diving Seager at third base, but the ball caromed directly to shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who made a strong throw to first base for the unconventional 5-6-3 bacon-saving single play.

Bullpen rebound

J.P. Howell got the final out of the sixth inning, then the Dodgers got scoreless frames from Luis Avilan, Yimi Garcia and Pedro Baez to close out the game.

After allowing six runs in the final three innings to blow Thursday's series opener, Dodgers relief pitchers in San Diego allowed just one run on four hits in 9⅓ innings, with no walks and 12 strikeouts.

Men of steal

The Dodgers continued their running ways on Sunday, with three steals in four attempts against Cashner, who had been relatively stingy to opposing base runners this season. Entering Sunday, would-be thieves had eight steals against Cashner in 26 starts but were caught nine times.

Rollins stole second in the fifth inning, though he probably was out had Gyorko held onto the throw. Rollins was then thrown out trying to steal third, ending the inning, and ending the Dodgers' streak at 16 consecutive stolen base attempts, dating back to Aug. 29.

In their last nine games the Dodgers have 16 steals, seven more than the next-best team (Texas).

Up next

The Dodgers return home to sleep in their own beds on Sunday night, and begin a three-game series in Anaheim on Monday night. Zack Greinke starts for the Dodgers in the opener on five days rest, with Nick Tropeano scheduled to pitch for the Angels.

Dodgers pitcher Brett Anderson left his start against the Padres on Sunday in the sixth inning with a cramp in his left calf.

The team says Anderson is day-to-day.

Anderson walked Derek Norris with two outs in the sixth inning on Sunday, then allowed a single to center field by Wil Myers. But after the single, trainer Stan Conte and manager Don Mattingly came to the mound to check on Anderson, who was pointing to and grabbing his left leg.

Anderson was removed from the game in favor of J.P. Howell, who finished off the inning.

"I felt it a little bit in the Norris at-bat, then on the one pitch Myers it cramped up. You wake up in the middle of the night or when you're stretching you get a calf cramp, usually it goes away. But this was the longest one I ever had. It balled up and wouldn't go away," Anderson said, per the SportsNet LA television broadcast. "I was trying to get through six so we could start fresh in the seventh, but the crap wouldn't go away.

"I'm going to be fine going forward. I just need to drink more water, Gatorade, electrolytes."

Earlier this season Anderson left a start in Atlanta in the third inning with a left Achilles problem, which caused his next start to get pushed back two days.

Anderson walked a season-high four on Sunday, but allowed just one run on four hits in his 5⅔ innings for the win. He has been quite durable this season, with 158 innings in his 27 starts, 35 more innings than he pitched from 2012-2014 combined.

By reaching the 155-inning plateau on Sunday, Anderson earned a $300,000 bonus.

The infielder rest carousel fell on Chase Utley on Sunday, after the 36-year-old started 13 of his first 15 games with the Dodgers. Justin Turner shifts over to second base on Sunday, with Seager starting at third base. It is the third start of the season at second base for Turner, and his first since May 8.

Seager is 4-for-10 with a pair of doubles and three RBI in his first three major league games, including two starts. He flew out to left field as a pinch hitter on Saturday night.

Yasmani Grandal, in the midst of an 0-for-33 slump, sits on Sunday, as expected with a day game after a night game, the usual practice most of this season. A.J. Ellis gets the start at catcher, having reached base by hit or walk in 20 of his last 21 starts.

Ellis since May 26 (hooray, selective endpoints!) is hitting .298/.433/.500 with four home runs and five doubles in 105 plate appearances.

Chris Heisey will also be available as a reserve on Sunday, as he was activated before the series finale.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers added to their September roster on Sunday, calling up Chris Heisey from Triple-A Oklahoma City before their series finale against the Padres in San Diego.

To make room for Heisey on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated Daniel Coulombe for assignment.

Heisey was reacquired by the Dodgers on Aug. 31 from the Blue Jays in a minor league trade for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The outfielder spent the first four months of the season with the Dodgers before getting designated for assignment to make roster room after the Dodgers' three-team, 13-player trade with the Marlins and Braves on July 30. Heisey was released on Aug. 7.

If anything, Heisey gives the Dodgers another outfielder other than Joc Pederson who can play center field well.

Heisey, 30, was 4-for-26 (.154) with eight walks (.353 on-base percentage) in 17 games in multiple stints with the Dodgers this season, and made starts at all three outfield positions.

Coulombe was back-and-forth between Triple-A and the majors several times in 2015, getting optioned to the minors six different times during the season. In five relief appearances, the 25-year-old left-hander allowed seven runs on nine hits in 8⅓ innings, with seven strikeouts and six walks.

In 38 appearances with Oklahoma City, Coulombe was 3-1 with a 3.27 ERA and one save, with 41 strikeouts and 24 walks in 41⅓ innings. Between the majors and minors this season, left-handed batters hit .262 (16-for-61) against Coulombe, but he had more walks (14) than strikeouts (13) and allowed same-handed batters a .403 on-base percentage in 2015.

The Dodgers have 34 players on their active roster, including 17 pitchers.

The Dodgers try for a sixth straight series win against the Padres with Sunday's series finale at Petco Park, and here is a look at a trio of Dodgers heading into the finale.

Betting on Brett

Brett Anderson said in the winter that he turned down bigger offers to join the Dodgers on a one-year, $10 million deal, a show of confidence in himself after averaging just 52 innings per season for the previous four years. Now, as Anderson has the inside track at the third-starter role in the playoffs, his gamble appears to have paid off, with the left-hander proving quite durable and effective in 2015.

The ground ball specialist makes his 27th start of the season on Sunday afternoon in San Diego, and has fared better on the road this season, going 5-4 with a 2.67 ERA in 13 road starts with am 18.8-percent strikeout rate compared to a 4.08 ERA and 13.4-percent strikeout rate at home.

Anderson is at 152⅓ innings on the season, having already earned a $300,000 bonus for reaching 150 innings, and will likely continue to earn one, if not two bonuses in each of his remaining starts. Up next for Anderson is $300,000 for 155 innings, and $350,000 for 160 innings. Anderson has pitched two games this season of 7⅔ innings or longer, topping out at eight innings at Texas in June 16.

This will be Anderson's first start against the Padres this season. His one career game against the Padres was a start as a rookie at Petco Park while with the Athletics, allowing three runs in five innings on June 20, 2009.

Chase heating up

Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley went 2-for-5 with a double on Saturday night, extending his hitting streak to five games. Since joining the Dodgers, Utley is hitting .250/.350/.500 in 60 plate appearances as a Dodger, with eight extra-base hits in 14 games.

Utley has started 13 of 15 games since he was acquired by the Dodgers.

Stingy Jansen

Kenley Jansen struck out one in a perfect ninth inning on Saturday night, earning his 29th save of the season. He is one save shy of 30 on the season. Jansen, who saved 44 games in 2014, has one of the 11 seasons of 30 or more saves by a Dodgers pitcher. Todd Worrell (1995-97) and Eric Gagne (2002-04) are the only Dodgers to achieve 30 saves more than twice.

On the season, Kenley Jansen has 67 strikeouts and only five walks. Before this season, the only Dodgers pitcher to have single-digit walks and even 40 strikeouts in a season was Ken Howell, with 54 strikeouts and nine walks in 1984.

The most strikeouts by a Dodgers pitcher with five or fewer walks in a season is 29, by Brandon McCarthy this year to go with his four walks before he needed Tommy John surgery. Before this season, the record was 22 strikeouts by Gagne in 2005, with just three walks, also in an injury-shortened campaign.
