LOS ANGELES -- Yasmani Grandal was in the middle of the Dodgers' offensive push on Monday night, helping them to a 4-1 win over the Rockies at Dodger Stadium.

Grandal drove in the Dodgers first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, then singled in his next two at-bats, the first hit registering at 112 mph off the bat. Even when he made an out in the eighth inning, Grandal hit a liner to center field.

"Hitting the ball hard four times today was definitely a confidence builder," Grandal said.

He's been dealing inflammation in his left (non-throwing) shoulder, something that first popped up when the Dodgers were on the road in Pennsylvania over five weeks ago. It finally got to a point last week where Grandal needed to rest for several days so the inflammation could calm down.

Grandal rested for six days, then played on Saturday in Arizona, walking twice in that game.

"I know he came out of the game the other day good. He wasn't on the report with having more shoulder soreness," manager Don Mattingly said before Monday's game. "They limited his swings in the cage."

Grandal even made a change to his approach while batting.

"We've been working a little bit on a couple different things to change the hitting stance so it doesn't put so much strain on the shoulder," Grandal said. "We have some inflammation in there, and it kind of calmed down already."

With left-handed pitchers starting Tuesday and Wednesday for the Rockies, Grandal might get even more rest over the next few days. At least he won't have to hear about the streak anymore from dorks on Twitter.

Grandal's fourth-inning single snapped an 0-for-36 skid for Grandal, and was his first hit since Aug. 16, with 28 days and 12 starts in between hits.

"I guess Eric is not going to have to keep counting down, or counting up on Twitter," he said.

Grandal struck out 17 times in 45 plate appearances during the skid, but it wasn't all empty. He walked eight times and was hit by a pitch once. On the season, Grandal is tied for second on the team with 58 walks.

"I've been on pretty bad ones. I think last year I was 5 for 70-something, but I don't really look into it," Grandal said. "I know I'm going to get out of it at some point."

I found a 7-for-65 skid he had in 2014. From that point forward, he hit .249/.356/.426 in 76 games the rest of the way.

Even with the streak, now over, Grandal is hitting .255/.369/.432 on the season, with a .352 wOBA and 126 wRC+ that both rank second among major league catchers with at least 250 plate appearances in 2015.

"The main thing for me was building that confidence in my new hitting stance, and knowing that my shoulder is okay," Grandal said.

Up next

The Dodgers send Brett Anderson to the mound on Tuesday night with a full eight days rest under his belt. The Rockies counter with Chris Rusin, one of a potentially long line of left-handed starters the Dodgers will face this week.

LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw continued his second-half run with seven strong innings on Monday night, leading the Dodgers to a 4-1 win over the Rockies in the series opener at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers' third straight win lowered their magic number to 12 to clinch the National League West.

Kershaw struggled with command early, walking D.J. LeMahieu after getting ahead in the count 0-2 in the first inning, then walking Jon Gray in the third, the first walk Kershaw issued to a pitcher all season.

That first walk proved to be crucial since it was followed by a double to the right center field gap by Nolan Arenado, followed by a Carlos Gonzalez ground out to score LeMahieu.

But that was pretty much it for Kershaw, who allowed just three hits on the night, and retired 14 of his final 16 batters faced. Kershaw struck out five, matching a season low for him, giving him 264 strikeouts on the season with likely four starts remaining.

Monday night was also the seventh straight start for Kershaw of at least seven innings allowing zero or one earned run, the longest streak by a Dodgers pitcher since Fernando Valenzuela's first seven major league starts in 1981.

But Kershaw mania extends farther back than just his last seven starts. In his last 13 starts, dating back to July 3, Kershaw is 9-0 with a 0.98 ERA, with 12 runs (11 earned) and 13 walks allowed, to go with 124 strikeouts in 101 innings.

Gray was matching Kershaw for a while, and set a new career high with eight strikeouts in his eighth career start. He allowed a run in the second inning, then had two outs in the fifth before he hit a wall. He walked Chase Utley, then Adrian Gonzalez singled him to third base. Justin Turner followed with a double to left, giving the Dodgers their first lead and ending Gray's night.

Yasmani Grandal drove in the first run of the game for the Dodgers with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left center field, then singled in his first two at-bats, the first of which was clocked at 112 mph off the bat. That snapped an 0-for-36 skid for the catcher.

Corey Seager in his home Dodgers debut doubled, singled and was hit by a pitch in his four plate appearances. He has reached base in all 10 of his major league starts, and through his first 11 games owns a .543 on-base percentage.

Seager's eighth-inning single was followed by a two-run shot by Scott Schebler, giving the Dodgers some insurance runs for the ninth.

After a 33-pitch performance on Sunday rendered Kenley Jansen unavailable for Monday, Chris Hatcher pitched the ninth inning for his third save of the season, and his first since May 2. Since returning from the disabled list on Aug. 15, Hatcher has a 1.35 ERA in 13 games and a 30.8-percent strikeout rate.

LOS ANGELES -- As the Dodgers enter their final extended homestand of the season, here is a series of updates on Dodgers in various states of injury.

Howie Kendrick got several at-bats in a simulated game at Dodger Stadium on Monday before the game, though did not run after hitting the ball. He hit at least one home run, a two-run shot because manager Don Mattingly called out a situation of 2-2, runner on second base two pitches before Kendrick hit one into the left field seats.

Kendrick will continue to get at-bats in another simulated game again on Tuesday.

* * *

Carl Crawford is not starting on Monday night against Rockies starter Jon Gray, two days after feeling tightness in his right hamstring. Mattingly said Crawford might be available to pinch hit if needed in an emergency on Monday, but the team would rather not use him, instead giving him time to rest.

"[Crawford] is doing well, and he came to me wanting to go. But Stan [Conte, team trainer] is being cautious with him. We have a righty tonight, and then two lefties back-to-back," Mattingly said. "We erred on the side of caution, given our rash of hamstring injuries and his being tight. We're in careful mode with him."

* * *

Jimmy Rollins will sit out at least another day before testing his right index finger. The earliest Rollins would start at shortstop is Wednesday, meaning more time for Corey Seager at the position.

"Jimmy was going to hit today and throw but that got pushed back another day, so that's going to be tomorrow now. He felt like he needed one more day," Mattingly said. "We'll find how he feels the next day."

Rollins last played on Sept. 6.

* * *

The Dodgers are awaiting MRI results on the left hamstring of infielder Jose Peraza, who left Sunday's game early. Mattingly said there is concern that Peraza will miss long enough to effectively end his season.

Peraza, who stole three bases in three attempts in his seven major league games, had a chance at making the Dodgers postseason roster at least as a pinch runner, though he also has positional versatility as well. Mattingly said the Dodgers don't really have another candidate on the 40-man roster or otherwise who might fill that role in October if not Peraza.

"You talk about a speed guy, that's one of those things you never know you need it until you get to that spot," Mattingly said.

Dee Gordon made the Dodgers postseason roster for both the NLDS and NLCS in 2013, but appeared in only two of 10 games as a pinch runner, and was unsuccessful in his only steal attempt.

* * *

Carlos Frias is in Los Angeles with the team, occupying one of 41 lockers currently in use in the Dodgers' 44-locker clubhouse. He is currently on the 60-day disabled list with back tightness, but is cleared to return.

"We plan on activating him," Mattingly said. "We're just not sure what day."

Frias last pitched on Thursday for Triple-A Oklahoma City. The Dodgers will need to make a corresponding move to make room for Frias on the 40-man roster, which is the only hold up in his activation. That move could be Peraza to the 60-day DL if his hamstring indeed forces him out for the year.

* * *

Yasmani Grandal is back in the starting lineup on Monday, two days after catching on Saturday for the first time in a week. Mattingly said Grandal felt fine after catching Saturday and didn't show up on any medical reports needing treatment on his left shoulder.

Mattingly said the medical staff has limited Grandal's swings in the batting cage recently in an effort to rest his left shoulder. With two left-handed starting pitchers slated for Colorado and Tuesday and Wednesday, Grandal figures to get even more rest after Monday's start.

* * *

There is no real update on Yasiel Puig and Kiké Hernandez, both nursing hamstring injuries. Hernandez was doing some stretching and exercises on the field, while Puig was limited to running indoors on the Alter G machine, which reduces stress on the body while running. "They're still working out," Mattingly said. "As they get better, they'll get on the field."

LOS ANGELES -- Corey Seager will make his home debut with the Dodgers on Monday night, starting at shortstop and batting sixth against the Rockies at Dodger Stadium.

Seager played in all 10 games of the road trip, the first 10 games of his big league career, starting nine. He excelled, hitting .412/.524/.647 with five doubles, a home run and eight walks, and has reached base in all nine of his starts.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers are back home for their final extended homestand of the season, a 10-game residency that will see divisional foes Colorado and Arizona come to town, with a weekend Pirates series in between. The Dodgers have a chance to not only close in on an unprecedented third straight division title, but also post the best home record since the franchise moved to Los Angeles.

The Dodgers are 47-21 at home this season, the best home record in baseball (narrowly ahead of the Pirates, 49-22 in Pittsburgh). With 13 home games remaining, the Dodgers currently have the best home winning percentage (.691) in Dodger Stadium history.

The best year in Los Angeles for the Dodgers was in 1980, when the club won 55 home games but finished the year with a loss in their 82nd home game, a loss in the divisional playoff against the Astros one day after sweeping Houston in a three-game series at Dodger Stadium to force said playoff.

The all-time Dodgers franchise mark for best home record came in 1953, when the 105-win Dodgers were 60-17 (.779) at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.

The Dodgers this year could match that home win total by sweeping their final four home series, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Winning eight of their final 13 home games would give the Dodgers their best home record since moving to LA.

The club has won 50 home games 12 times at Dodger Stadium, something last accomplished in 2009 (50-31). That was the only time since 1991 the Dodgers have won 50 home games.

The Dodgers last lost a home series from July 3-5 when the Mets took two of three games. Since then, the Dodgers have won seven series at Dodger Stadium and tied a two-game set.

Clayton Kershaw is on the mound for the Dodgers on Monday night, at 9-2 with a 1.411 ERA at home this season. That ranks as the eighth-best seasonal ERA in Dodger Stadium history, with a minimum of 10 starts, a whisker behind teammate Zack Greinke (1.407) for seventh.

With a strong finish, Kershaw or Greinke could move as high as third, behind only Sandy Koufax (0.85 ERA in 1964) and Orel Hershiser (1.03 ERA in 1985).

Kershaw entered this season 6-2 with a 1.38 ERA in 11 career home starts against the Rockies. This season he has allowed three runs in both home starts against Colorado, with four earned runs in 12⅔ innings, both Dodgers wins.

The Dodgers have won 11 of their last 13 home games against the Rockies.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers will battle the Rockies six times over the next 14 days, beginning Monday night with the opener of a three-game series on Monday night at Dodger Stadium. That means the Dodgers will need to contend with the top two home run hitters in the National League in Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez.

Arenado sits atop the league with 38 home runs and 110 RBI, including eight home runs in 14 games in September.

When the Dodgers last played the Rockies, they left on June 3 with Gonzalez sitting on four home runs in 48 games, two of which were hit at Dodger Stadium, including a three-run game-winner on May 14. Now, Gonzalez has 37 home runs, including a whopping 27 home runs in his last 60 games.

Arenado actually has more home runs on the road (20) than at home (18), and Gonzalez has hit 15 of his 37 home runs away from home. But away from Coors Field both have numbers that would make Dave Kingman proud, with power but little else.

On the road, Arenado is hitting .248/.285/.522 with 20 home runs and 14 doubles in 70 games, a .335 wOBA and 111 wRC+. Gonzalez is hitting .238/.295/.468 with 15 home runs and 10 doubles in 68 games, a .323 wOBA and 103 wRC+ away from home.

Gonzalez is 6-for-33 (.182) with two home runs (both hit in 2012) and 17 strikeouts against Clayton Kershaw, starting on Monday for the Dodgers. This year, Gonzalez is 1-for-3 against Kershaw.

Arenado is 7-for-27 (.259) with two doubles and a home run against Kershaw, including 3-for-12 (.250) with a home run and a double in 2015.

The Dodgers have hit 84 home runs in 68 home games this season, and allowed 55. The Dodgers are on pace for 100 home runs at home this season, something done three times in the first 53 years of Dodger Stadium — 2000 (108 home runs), 1979 (106) and 2004 (100).

Three baggers

With the Rockies in town, that means we will have the top three active triples leaders in the same stadium. Jose Reyes is second among active players with 117 career triples, four behind Carl Crawford and four ahead of Jimmy Rollins.

Rollins isn't expected to start on Monday, as he gets his right index finger reevaluated. Reyes in his time in Toronto hit zero triples in 69 games in 2015 and four triples in 305 games with the Blue Jays, but since joining the Rockies Reyes is hitting .270/.302/.411 with two triples in 35 games.

Rollins has two triples this season, and Crawford has one.

There have been 15 triples hit this season at Dodger Stadium, tied for fourth-fewest in baseball, 11 by the Dodgers. There have been 22 triples hit in Dodgers road games this season.

The Rockies lead the National League, and are two off the major league lead, with 42 triples, though 31 have been hit at the spacious Coors Field. Rockies games in 2015 have seen 53 triples hit in Denver, one behind Comerica Park for most in baseball, and 21 away from Colorado.
