Middle infielders old and new shined in the Dodgers' three-run winning rally in a 4-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium to snap a four-game losing streak.

With the win, coupled with the Giants' loss in San Diego, the Dodgers own a seven-game lead with 11 games to play, and a magic number to clinch the National League West of five.

Jimmy Rollins, making his first start since Sept. 6, reached safely on a perfect push bunt in between first base and the mound to open the eighth inning in a 1-1 tie. He was sacrificed to second, then his longtime Phillies teammate Chase Utley doubled to the right field wall to score Rollins.

Corey Seager followed with a home run just inside the right field foul pole against left-handed reliever Matt Reynolds, providing all the insurance the Dodgers would need.

Utley got things started, with a first-pitch home run to open the bottom of the first inning off Chase Anderson, the first home run in baseball history involving a batter and a pitcher both named Chase.

Noted everyone-killer Paul Goldschmidt, but especially a noted Dodger destroyer, hit a first-pitch home run of his own to start the second inning.

But that was pretty much it, for a while.

Carlos Frias was thrust into spot start duty with just two days rest after throwing two innings and 25 pitches on Sunday, and did an admirable job. Frias had a loose limit of roughly 40 pitches, and the right-hander was able to coax four innings out of that, retiring 12 of the 13 batters he faced, allowing only the home run to Goldschmidt (join the club), striking out two.

Anderson didn't even allow another hit after the Utley home run, only walking two while striking out a career-high 10 in his six innings for the Diamondbacks.

Kenley Jansen pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 33rd save.

Up next

The Dodgers turn to Clayton Kershaw in Thursday's homestand finale, a rare 12:10 p.m. PT start at Dodger Stadium. The Diamondbacks counter with left-hander Patrick Corbin.

Wednesday particulars

Home runs: Chase Utley (8), Corey Seager (3); Paul Goldschmidt (31)

WP - Chris Hatcher (3-5): 2 up, 2 down

LP - David Hernandez (1-5): ⅓ IP, 2 hits, 2 runs

With the loss, San Francisco (79-72) is seven games behind Los Angeles (86-65) with 11 games to play.
Rollins last started at shortstop on Sept. 6.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers will turn to Carlos Frias to start on Wednesday night against the Diamondbacks, and he will have a new shortstop behind him.

Jimmy Rollins starts at shortstop for the first time in 15 games, since Sept. 6 in San Diego. Rollins has been limited by a sprained right index finger, appearing just three times as a pinch hitter and three times as a pinch runner in the last 14 games.

Corey Seager, who started each of the last 14 games at shortstop, moves over to third base with Justin Turner still out, the 18th start in 19 games since getting called up for his major league debut. Seager has reached base in each of his first 17 starts, setting a new Los Angeles Dodgers record.

This will be the 13th start of the season for Frias, but his first since June 30. He's starting on Wednesday in place of Zack Greinke, scratched with a sore right calf.

Frias is 5-5 with a 4.27 ERA in 15 games, including 12 starts at the major league level this season, with 40 strikeouts and 24 walks in 71⅔ innings.

Frias pitched two innings and threw 25 pitches on Sunday, his only outing since rejoining the Dodgers this month.

LOS ANGELES -- Zack Greinke has been scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday night against the Diamondbacks with calf soreness, the Dodgers announced. The team hasn't yet announced its replacement starter.

The club says Greinke is expected to make his next start, which is slated for next week in San Francisco.

This is the first real setback during the regular season for Greinke, who has had a fantastic year, going 18-3 with a 1.65 ERA in 30 starts. Outside of a lubricating injection in his elbow that the team called routine maintenance during spring training, Greinke has been otherwise healthy in 2015. He made all but two starts on four or five days rest, with the lone exceptions being his first start after the All-Star game and then a break for the birth of his child, both in July.

Greinke was sidelined in spring training in 2014 with a right calf strain.

Joe Wieland seems like the most likely option to start in Greinke's place on Wednesday since he's the only other starter on the active roster, though he last pitched on Sept. 9. Ian Thomas or Carlos Frias could be other options but that would necessitate more of a bullpen game since both have been pitching in relief of late.

Zach Lee, the only member of the 40-man roster not on either the active roster on disabled list, could be another option, but, like Wieland, his last start was Sept. 9.
